1. Define the following terms


a. CPOE
Computerized Provider Order Entry—direct entry of medical orders into a healthcare system’s EHR by licensed
independent practitioners or other staff with specific ordering privileges, and not by clinical or administrative support staff

b. PIMS
Pharmacy Information Management System integrates pharmaceutical data collection
and the processing and presentation of information
that helps staff at all levels of a country’s health
system make evidence-based decisions to manage
pharmaceutical services.
c. EMR
Electronic medical records are a digital version of the paper charts in the clinician’s office. An EMR contains the
medical and treatment history of the patients in one practice.

d. CDSS
Clinical Decision Support Systems are computer systems designed to assist clinicians with patient-related decision
making, such as diagnosis and treatment.

e. HIT
Health Information Technology is a term describing the acquiring, storing, retrieving and using of healthcare
information to foster better collaboration among a patient's various healthcare providers.
f. EHR
Electronic health records focus on the total health of the patient—going beyond standard clinical data collected in
the provider’s office and inclusive of a broader view on a patient’s care. EHRs are designed to reach out beyond the health
organization that originally collects and compiles the information. They are built to share information with other health care
providers, such as laboratories and specialists, so they contain information from all the clinicians involved in the patient’s
care.

g. CPRS
Computerized Patient Record System direct entry of

h. LFT
Liver function test are used to measure specific enzymes and proteins in your blood. Depending on the test, either
higher- or lower-than-normal levels of these enzymes or proteins can indicate a problem with your liver.

i. TSH
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is a hormone that controls thyroid function.

j. NPO
Nothing by mouth is a medical instruction meaning to withhold food and fluids from a person for various reasons.

k. TPN
Total parenteral nutrition supplies all daily nutritional requirements. TPN can be used in the hospital or at home.
Because TPN solutions are concentrated and can cause thrombosis of peripheral veins, a central venous catheter is usually
required.

2. Based on the importance of the CPOE explain in your own words the advantages of the CPOE.

Having a CPOE does not only hasten the medication process but also helps correlate the different information about the
patient so that a suitable medication regimen will be established. Since different lab results, diagnosis/finding of the
physician, dietary plan, etc. is entered in the CPOE it is easier to prescribe the best medication suited to the patient to have a
favorable outcome. Undesired outcomes can be prevented from the information entered by the licensed practitioners.
