Introduction
Time/min
The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 place a duty on employers to reduce the
risk to their employees’ health by controlling the noise they are exposed to whilst at work.
The regulations were established under the Health and Safety at Work etc.
05 mins
Noise at work can cause hearing loss that can be temporary or permanent. People often
experience temporary deafness after leaving a noisy place. Permanent hearing damage can
be caused immediately by sudden, extremely loud, explosive noises, eg from guns or
cartridge-operated machines. Hearing loss is not the only problem. People may develop
tinnitus (ringing, whistling, buzzing or humming in the ears), a distressing condition which
can lead to disturbed sleep.

How is noise measured?

Noise is measured in decibels (dB).
