    Enzymes are biological catalysts composed of protein that increase the rate of chemical reactions in living organisms without being changed by the reactions themselves. They are important for sustaining life by speeding up metabolic reactions that would otherwise be too slow to provide sufficient energy. Enzymes can be intracellular like catalase and phosphorylase or extracellular like lipase and amylase, and each enzyme is specific to catalyzing one particular substrate by forming a complementary lock and key shape complex with its substrate.
