A: Mmm, this soup is delicious, Tim. Did you make it yourself?
T: Oh, I’m glad you like it, Anna. It’s a really easy recipe. I can let you have
it if you like.
A: Thanks, I’d love it. So, how are things going with you?
T: Pretty good. Did I tell you my brother’s getting married in the summer?
A: No! That’s great! What type of wedding is he having?
T: Well, that’s the problem. They don’t have much money, and everything’s
so expensive. They’re still trying to work out what they can afford.
A: It’s difficult, isn’t it? But you know the band I’m in? We’d be really happy
to play for them. We wouldn’t charge them anything.
T: Really? That’s very nice of you!
A: Not at all – it would be a lot of fun. And I know a great place to have the
party. It’s not expensive. If you tell me the date, I could check if it’s free.
T: Thanks a lot.
A: It’s nothing, really! Oh, I nearly forgot. Julia told me you won the
photography competition you entered. Congratulations!
T: Well, to be honest, not many people entered.
A: I’m sure that’s not true. You’re a fantastic photographer.
T: I don’t know about that.
A: I have another idea. You could offer to take the wedding photos.
T: What a great idea! Thank you so much. I’m sure they’d love that.

Sa: So, the question this week is whether friendships can turn into romantic
relationships. What do you think, Tom?
T: Er, I dunno. I’m not really the romantic type!
Sa: Thanks for that, Tom! Very helpful! Well Sophie, who’s 25, met her
partner, Marco, thirteen years ago when they were in high school.
Here’s what she said:
So: I met Marco in the first year of high school and we immediately became
friends. You know, it just worked! We had things in common, mainly
music; we were in a band together. But I thought of him as a friend, not
a boyfriend, especially since he had a girlfriend. After finishing school,
we attended colleges in different cities, but we still stayed in touch.
Then we both ended up working in New York, and we started to see
more of each other.
Sa: Aha! So what happened?
So: I can’t tell you exactly when our friendship turned into a romance –
it was gradual. But I’m so glad it did. You see, I think we choose our
friends for the right reasons. You know, because we have things in
common – in our case, music. And because we can be honest with
them. We can be ourselves, and they’ll still like us.
Sa: Absolutely.
So: Often, when people start seeing a new girlfriend or boyfriend, they
pretend to be a little better than they are. But with Marco, I knew what
he was like and he knew me, and there was no pretending. But, back
to my original point, I think what we look for in our friends – shared
interests and honesty – form the basis for a good, long-lasting
relationship. But, when you think about the things that attract you to a
partner, it’s often very different! If we’re honest, it’s usually a person’s
physical attractiveness.
Sa: Yeah, totally.
So: But good looks aren’t enough for a long-lasting relationship. You might
fall madly in love after one or two dates but, six months later, that
person might not seem quite so perfect!
Sa: Tell me about it! Well thanks, Sophie, for …
