HISTORY
The Mindanao State University, founded on September 1, 1961 through Republic Act 1387 and
Republic Act 1893, has evolved over the years in keeping with national and local developments. The brain-
child of late Senator, Domocao Alonto, it has grows from its main campus Marawi City to a University System
that now comprises several campuses located in major centers in Mindanao and Sulu. Its first president was
Dr. Antonio Isidro who came in from his position as the Vice President for Academic Affairs in the University
of the Philippines.
The mandates of the University are, namely: (1) To perform the traditional functions of a university
namely: instruction, research and extension service; (2) To help accelerate the program of the
integration among the peoples of Southern Philippines, particularly the Muslims and other cultural
minorities, and (3) To provide trained manpower skills and technical know how for the economic
development of the Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan (MINSUPALA) region.

MSU as Social Integration Laboratory

MSU is a product of government efforts at national integration following the

Kamlon rebellion in Jolo in early 1950s. It was created through Republic Act No.
1387, authored by Sen. Domocao Alonto.
Its mandate is to accelerate the integration of the Muslims and cultural
minorities into the mainstream of national life, and provide the technical manpower
needed for the socioeconomic development of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan.
Although passed in 1956, the university was not able to operate until 1961. Classes
first opened in June 1962 with 282 students and 12 faculty members.

MSU as Peace University

Mindanao State University is well known as the melting pot of the south, it is to say that despite of the
diversity the peace among the people inside is always present. The differences of the people didn't
made a huge hindrance to show what they are, hence, it became a winning strategy to be friends with
each other inside the respective campus.Peace is where we feel undoubtedly with anyone, anybody.
People needs to be very compassionate to achieve peace not only with the people that surrounds them
but within themselves.
