TITLE: Crushed Pili Nut (Canarium Ovatum) Shells as an Admixture to Outdoor Tiles

Stone tile is one of the most common type of tiles used for outdoor application. In this

present time where there is a growing demand for flooring tiles, the researchers conducted a study

on the effectiveness of crushed pili nut shells as an admixture to outdoor tiles and mainly focuses

on its flexural strength by performing a series of experimental tests with varied amounts in each

trial.

This study aims to develop an alternative construction material that is economical and at

the same time making use of the pili nut shells which are usually thrown aside, producing

additional waste.

The pili tree is indigenous to the Philippine archipelago and grows primarily in the Bicol

region. Its fruit is 6-7 centimeters long, with a hard, thick-shelled, triangular nut surrounded by a

small amount of pulp. The pili nut shell has good mechanical property with a force at fracture for

longitudinal position of 2.66 to 3.15 kN and 1.48 to 1.6 kN for transverse position.

The pili tree (Canarium ovatum Engl.) is indigenous to the Philippine archipelago and grows

The fruit is 6–7 centimetres (2 1/4–3 inches) long, with a hard, thick-shelled,

triangular nut surrounded by a small amount of pulp.

In the Bicol Region, the #pilinut shell is commonly used in making different handicrafts and furniture.

Besides these uses, the Pili has its nut shell, which is locally considered as waste. The Pili nut shell is usually
thrown aside, producing additional waste.
