Introduction to Cosmetic Industry

Global cosmetic market is expected to garner $429.8 billion by 2022, registering a CAGRof
4.3% during the forecast period 2016-2022. Cosmetics market (makeup or beauty products) are
mixture of chemical generally used enhance the appearance or odor of human body. Sun care,
skin care, hair care, deodorants, makeup and color cosmetics , and fragrance are some of the
cosmetics and fragrance are some of the cosmetics products that are predominatlly available and
used by individuals. Retail stores including supermarkets, exlusive brand outlets, and specially
stores amongst others are the major distribution channels, with online channels gaining
popularity among consumers.

There is considerable rise in disposable income over the past decade. The growth in global
economic , changing lifestyle, rising demand of skin and sun care products due to varying
climatic conditions encourages the growth of the market for cosmetics. A shift of preference
towards natural and organic beauty products, particularly in U.S and European countries , fosters
the growth of the cosmetics markets. Rising demand for natural , herbal and organic products
creates potential opportunities for manufactures to innovate and develop new products in
accordance to consumer preference.

The history of cosmetics takes us back to 10,000 B.C . spanning at least 6000 years in the
human history . people’s purpose of using cosmetics was just the same , to make them more
beautiful and attractive . therefore, the cosmetics are important to people , especially for women
. Ancient Egyptians believed in looking good and smelling good , because of their old expression
which is “cleanliness is next to Godliness’ . therefore , they needed to find ways so that they can
make themselves look presentable. Thus, cosmetics were one of those things . Egyptian women
used to apply black or dark gray to their lashes and upper eyelids, not just to look good but
because of spiritual belief , the dark colours were designed not just enhance their appearance but
also ward off evil eyes .

Maybelline :
The Maybelline company was created by a 19 –year- old entrepreneur named Thomas Lyle
Williams in 1915 . Williams noticed his older sister Mabel applying a mixture of Vaseline and

Coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker ,fuller look. He adapted it with a chemistry set
and produced a product sold locally called Lash- Brow – lne . Williams renamed his eye
beautifier Maybelline in honor of the sister who gave him the idea . in 1917 the company
produced Maybelline cake Mascara”the first modern eye cosmetic for everyday use” and Ultra
Lash in the 1960s , which was the first mass –market automatic .

In 1967 , the company was sold by Williams to Plough, Inc. (now schering – plough )in
Memphis , Tennessee.the entire cosmetic production facility was moved from Chicago to
Memphis over one week-end . In 1975 , the company moved its factory to Little Rock,
Arkansas, where it is still located . in 1990, Schering – plough sold Maybelline to a New York
investment firm ,Wasserstein Perella &Co. Maybelline operational Headquarters remained in
Memphis until being sold in 1996 , when headquarters moved to New York City . the makeup
factory moved to Brooklyn in 2000.

Lotus group
The company lotus herbals ltd. Was set up two decades ago in the year 1993 by kamal passi.
This is brand deals with manufacturing and selling of various kinds of cosmetics. The list
includes face cleaners, sunscreens, winter care, hair oils and shampoo. Passi knew ths
importance of good packaging and made sure his products stand out in design. He also priced
his products at least 10-15% lower than the contemporary brands in the segment. However he
doesn’t believe making a huge expenditure on advertising. Lotus herbals ltd company
speialises in producing cosmetics that claims to have ayurveda as well as herbal goodness.
The brand promotes their products by accerdting their USP to be an amalgamation of
traditional knowledge along with modern technology. They believe in making use of herbal
ingredients and making their products devoid of chemical-based , synthetic cosmetics. This

brand is also strictly against the cruel practices of animal testing. Lotus herbals ltd. Is
growing at a rate of 35-40% a year.

Himalaya
The Himalaya drug company was founded in the year 1930 by M. Manal who had a vision to
make ayurveda accessible to the world. Himalaya has been able to patent its suncream,
under- eye cream, anti-acne range and hair loss cream among others from the united states
patent and trademark office. The business of Himalaya in india contributed 60% of the
brand’s sales of rs. 1, 200 crores in 2011. Himalaya is also owner of the popular face wash
‘purifying neem’ which is very popularin a country like india where problems like acne and
greasy skin are widespread.

Elle 18
The brand Elle 18 is owned by Hindustan unilever limited (hul). It was launched in 1998.
Elle 18 is aimed at the youth as it has bright colours along with neon shades in its products.
The pricing of the products are also done keeping in mind the youth.

Colorbar
Colorbar cosmetics is one of the leading brands of cosmetics in india . it was founded in
2004. The founder as well as managing director of the brand is samir modi. The brand is
known for its bright peppy colours and has a number of products to add colour to nails, eyes,
lips and face.
