Subject: Fire in a Hotel in Delhi

Tuesday, February 12, 2019 witnessed a horrific incident of fire in a hotel in Karol Bagh, New Delhi in
which 17 people lost their lives, many of them in their sleep. Gaps that led to accident based on
gathered information are

1. Unauthorised alterations by hotel to the building Terrace after NOC and fire inspection
2. Firefighting equipment wasn't working and staff not trained to handle it
3. Hotel windows were sealed, making rescue difficult
4. Failed in-house fire detection and protection system
5. Inadequate smoke ventilations in corridors and staircases
6. Vertical shaft openings kept open to travel smoke throughout the building and not sealed
7. No fire separation and compartmentation in common areas and staircases
8. No prominent visible fire exit signage and evacuation plan to direct occupants
9. Electrical wiring were not inspected or checked since long
10. Inadequate and blocked fire exits
11. Failure of mechanical windows latches to open in case of emergency
12. Storing combustibles material and wooden interiors in common passage and egress path
13. Delayed reporting to local Fire station
14. Time lapse by fire tender with manual ladder initially and then change to hydraulic sky lift

From the above it can be inferred that


1. There was clear violation in adherence to Safety procedures
2. Regular training’s, Periodic Internal & External audits for Fire and Life Saving (FLS) and Electrical
system and mitigation of findings of these are key to avoid such accidents
