TRIGONOMETRY

SOLUTION OF RIGHT TRIANGLES

1. Find all missing sides and angles in the
given triangle.
2. To find the height of a building, a person walks to
a spot 130m away from the base of the building and
measures the angle between the base and the top
of the building. The angle is found to be 51.2°. How
tall is the building?
3. A ladder is leaning against the side of the
building, forming an angle of 60° with the
ground. If the foot of the ladder is 10m from
the base of the building, how far up does the
ladder reach, and how long is the ladder?
4. A person stationed on a 40m tall
observation tower spots a bear in the
distance. If the angle of depression (that is,
the angle between the horizontal and the
line of sight) is 30°, how far away is the bear,
assuming that the land surrounding the tower
is flat?
5. A 12m tall antenna sits on top of a
building. A person is standing some distance
away from the building. If the angle of
elevation between the person and the top of
the antenna is 60o, and the angle of
elevation between the person and the top of
the building is 45o, how tall is the building
and how far away is the person standing?
ANGLE OF ELEVATION

The angle of elevation of an object is above

the eye of an observer is the angle which the
line of sight to the object makes with the
horizontal.
ANGLE OF DEPRESSION

If the object is below the eye of the observer,

the angle which the line of sight makes with
the horizontal is called the angle of
depression of the object.
6. From a window 30 feet above the level
ground, a building 100 feet high, and at a
distance of 200 feet, is observed. Find the
angle of elevation of the top of the building
and the angle of depression of its base.
TYPES OF TRIANGLES
1. RIGHT TRIANGLE – triangle that have a
right angle.

2. OBLIQUE TRIANGLE – triangle that does not

have a right angle.
a. ACUTE TRIANGLE – triangle whose interior
angles are all acute angle.
b. OBTUSE TRIANGLE – triangle that has
obtuse interior angle.
SPECIAL TRIANGLE

1. Egyptian Triangle (3-4-5 Triangle)

2. Right Isosceles Triangle

3. 30-60 Right Triangle

ISOSCELES TRIANGLES AND
REGULAR POLYGONS

1. A garage has a gable roof whose rafters

make an angle of 35°with the horizontal.
What is the length of a rafter if the width
of the garage is 10 feet?
ISOSCELES TRIANGLES AND
REGULAR POLYGONS

2. Find the length of the side of a regular

pentagon inscribed in a circle of radius 6
inches.
ISOSCELES TRIANGLES AND
REGULAR POLYGONS

3. The radius of a circle is 40 inches, the

length of a chord is 70 inches. Find the
central angle subtended by the chord.
ISOSCELES TRIANGLES AND
REGULAR POLYGONS

4. Find the radius, the apothem

(perpendicular distance from the center to
a side), and the area of a regular decagon
whise side is 10 inches.
