WOMEN AT WOKRPLACE

KALASH AGGARWAL

CONCEPT OF FEMINISM AND HOW WOMEN ARE POSITIONED AND PLACED IN

THE WORKPLACE. GLASS CEILING AND HOW IT AFFECTS WOMEN.
Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has stated one of the
reason for his great success was that he was competing with half
the population.
What is feminism exactly? feminism is a range of political movements ideologies in social
movement that share a common goal to define women's right on the ground of equality of
sexes. This includes giving educational and professional opportunities for women that are equal
to those for men. Giving opportunity to women and men on the same ground doesn't mean
giving opportunity to women over men. And this has lead to the birth of new concept namely
falsu feminism or faux feminism which is prioritizing female over their male counterparts. This
distortion of the word has bamboozled an average rational person.According to me today
feminism is unrecognisable and Feminism shouldn't be confused with favourable'ism. Misandry
& Misogyny will only lead to a self englufing black hole i.e. providing no good to the society as a
whole.

Recent “voguish” #metoo movement has hit the internet with the plenty of hammer. The phrase
has come to encapsulate the idea that sexual misconduct and assault are underreported.
#metoo founder TARANA BURKE has said the hashtag is to raise awareness of the
pervasiveness of sexual abuse and assault in society .i.e. it is for all of us. According to Pew
Research, until September 30 this year, the #MeToo hashtag was already used more than 19
million times on Twitter in just English language, which comes to an average of 55,319 per day.
29 per cent of all interactions on #MeToo were either about entertainment industry or personal
sagas. #MeToo is still among the most searched terms on Google in India (as of October 2018).
Instagram alone has more than 15 lakh posts. But what I'll like to ask is a rhetoric question, are
all these true? Aren't there any attempt to defame men?

Next I'll like to discuss is Glass ceiling, an effect everyone might have heard of is the invisible
barrier that prevents women and minorities from rising to the highest ranks in a corporation.
What we may not realize is just how pervasive the glass ceiling still is, even when we are living
in 21st century. A 2003 report by the federal Glass Ceiling Commission showed that only seven
to nine percent of upper management at Fortune 1000 firms were women. According to a 2005
article on the Wall Street Journal showed that 97 percent of top executives at the same
companies were white. Clearly, the effect is extremely pervasive throughout all sorts of
industries.

From the moment we are born, boys and girls are treated differently. Parents overestimate the
crawling ability of the sons and underestimate the crawling ability of their daughters thus clearly
Reflecting the belief that girls need to be helped more than boys. In 1970, American women
were paid 59 cents to every Dollar their male counterparts made and by 2010, through constant
protest, fight and work compensation raised to 77 cents to every dollar men made. A 2011
McKinsey report noted that men are promoted based on potential, while women are promoted
on past accomplishments. A 2012 McKinsey survey of more than four thousand employees of
leading companies found that 36 percent of the men wanted to reach the C-suite, compared to
only 18 percent of the women. Gymboree once sold onesies proclaiming "Smart like Daddy" for
boys and "Pretty like Mommy" for girls. 24 The same year, J. C. Penney marketed a T-shirt to
teenage girls that bragged, "I'm too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me."
These things did not happen in 1951. They happened in 2011.
A 2003 case study of Columbia business school, New York university and Harvard business
school about a real life entrepreneur Heidi Roizen clearly shows that success and likeability are
positively correlated for men and negatively correlated for women.

Everyday discrimination is a workplace reality. When a girl tries to lead, she is often labeled
bossy. Boys are seldom called bossy because a boy taking the role of a boss does not surprise
or offend. Since 2015 Women remain underrepresented. The number of women/female
graduating with an honorable and credible degrees is more than that of men but still the gender
ratio in jobs is still inequitable and for the women of colour or lesbian it's even worse.

Progress on gender diversity at work has stalled. To achieve equality, companies must turn
good intentions into concrete action. Companies need to create a safe and respectful work
environment and recognise the LGBTQ community. Now companies need to take more decisive
action. This starts with treating gender diversity like the business priority it is.

NOW WOMEN ARE DOING THEIR PART NOW ITS TIME COMPANIES DO THEIR PART TOO!
