Charlotte “Lotte” Reiniger was a German silhouette animation film director.

her films, The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), Papageno (1935), ETC.

her animations were animated by hand.

She was born in berlin, in 2 June 1899 and died in 19 June 1981.

She made more than 40 films.

She was fascinated with the Chinese arts of paper cutting silhouette puppetry.

She built a puppet theatre.

In your own words describe the technique of animation Lotte Reiniger used…

She draws then cuts out her drawings of the character/s.

then she cuts holes in each limb and put wire through each part giving them human like
movement.

After that, she places the character on the glass board, turns the light on and takes a load of
pictures.

There isn’t a huge amount of detail but a lot in the background, it’s a very
different and unique animation that we haven’t seen today. In some cases, it is
better than animation today as you don’t have to draw another and another
drawing, you just use Charlotte’s method.
It’s a smoother animation.
I like it because it’s very different, it has a unique aesthetic to it. You can easily
tell what’s happening, but without music it’s very creepy.
