RESEARCH TASK

Discover as much as you can about Lotte Reiniger in 10 minutes. Write your
findings in the text box below

 Charlotte (Lotte) Reiniger was born in Charlottenberg, Berlin on June 2,


1899. At the age of six, she began cuttting silhouettes and putting on
shadow plays in front of her family for her family entertaniment which had
the based of Shakespeare.

 Lotte Reiniger was attracted by films that used aniamtion and special
effects.

 She made the First full length animated film which was called The
Adventures of Prince Achmed 1926. This film was shown all around the
world such as London, New York, Tokyo and France.

 The Instiute for Cultural Learning is not only where she began her career
in animation, but also where she met her future husband Carl Koch, an art
historian turned filmaker.

 She made films for cinemea and started as a backstage artist making
props.
 48 films using silhoutte animation using fairytales such as Aladdin and
Cinderalla.

3. Creates what she wants her story to be by doing storyboards
4. Cuts out the individual components for each of the character ready to put
together.
5. Once all characters and props are cut out put them together.

 Concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty.

Why is this form of animation effective? What's not so effective?

What works?
 The different depths and layers.
 Characters that are flaunted while they hand and legs moving.
 Transitions go in and out different scenes to keep the audience engaged
 You can pick out the different elements of objects and the outlines of the
characters.
What doesn’t work?
 Not as much detailed and no colour don’t know what type of costumes the
characters are wearing.
 No Sound
 No Narrative
 Creepy with the different light and shade maybe not for the right
audiences because you associated animation with kids and younger
children age 3 to 9 years old.

LOTTE REINIGER
 The story quite simple so the audience doesn’t get as much information
other than the basics that are shown.

New developments in Media and Art are often not themselves brand new but
instead learn and build upon work of the past.
