    Aim

    To study the effect of mechanical treatment to break seed dormancy.

    Materials Required
    Bean seeds, sand paper, needles, bottle, petri dish, filter paper, distilled
    water, etc.

    Procedure
    1. Take four petri dishes, label them A, B, C and D. Line
    them with double filtered paper. Moisten the filter
    paper with distilled water.
    2. Take 10 seeds and abrade them with sand paper.
    Similarly seed coats of 10 seeds are pricked with
    ordinary needle.
    3. Likewise take 10 seeds and shake them in a bottle
    vigorously. Do not give any mechanical treatment to
    10 seeds.
    4. Sow the seeds in four petri dishes (each petri dish
    having 10 seeds but of different treatment).
    5. Allow the seeds to germinate in suitable condition

    Observations
    It will be observed that after a few days, seeds with mechanical
    treatment start germinating. Seeds without any mechanical treatment
    either will not germinate or will show poor germination (due to hard
    seed coats).
