(54) AN APPARATUS FOR ROTARY FRICTION WELDING AND A METHOD OF ROTARY FRICTION
WELDING

(57) A friction welding apparatus (30) comprising a first clamp (36) for holding a first part (32) to be welded by rotary
friction welding, a second clamp (42) for holding a second part (34) to be welded by rotary friction welding, a device for
producing relative rotation (40) between the first clamp (36) and the second clamp (42) and a forge (44) for applying an
axial forging pressure to the parts (32, 34) to be welded when the parts (32, 34) are located in the clamps (36, 42). The
second clamp (42) being mounted on a first half of a coupling (68). A second half of the coupling (72) is movable axially
between a first position and a second position. In the first position the second half of the coupling (72) is engaged with
the first half of the coupling (68) to prevent rotation of the second clamp (42) and enable relative rotation between the
first clamp (36) and the second clamp (42). In the second position the second half of the coupling (72) is disengaged
from the first half of the coupling (68) to enable rotation of the second clamp (42) and stop relative rotation between the
first clamp (36) and the second clamp (42).
