THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Small motor skills are basic skills that allow children to achieve academic

and pre-academic tasks such as utilizing pencils and writing their own names.

(Chandler, K., West, J. & Hausken, E, 1995). If this so, this will affect on child’s

practical life activities such as from dressing to feeding to using writing instruments.

Teacher-made manipulative materials have an increased possibility to grant

preschool children with enticing and meaningful activities for developing fine motor

skills and inevitably to advance their handwriting skills. Through varied activities, a

child will be able to utilize its ability in handwriting. It is not enough to simply ask

the learners to write lines, letters, numbers or even draw a simple image on a sheet

of paper; they must be engaged such activities that will develop their handwriting

skills.

Background of the Study

For the past 3 years being a public-school kindergarten teacher, I have

noticed that there are pupils struggling in handwriting and letter formation. This

concern helps me think to do this study to cater and address their needs. Students

also struggle fine motor tasks such as coloring and cutting activities. This will lead

to lack of self-confidence in participating of any writing task. There are many

possible reasons as to why these students continue to struggle in handwriting.

Some, will say because there are students who were not able to attend pre-

kindergarten or formal schooling prior to kindergarten. The undeveloped fine motor

skills are so weak due to lack of experience at home and school.

Series of studies suggests regarding on the intelligences of a child.

Intelligence is the potential to abstract, observe, comprehend, reason and deduce

conclusions. Moreover, diligence quotient affords a measure of the individual’s

diligence in a particular situation. It is a dedication to work hard to get the job done.

Statement of the Problem

This research proposal aims to seek handwriting interventions and fine

motor skill practice. This diligence quotient development program aims to utilizes

the ability of the learner to work hard to develop their fine motor skills and

eventually their handwriting skills.
