ACTIVITY 1 Traditional or Progressive: What is your View of Curriculum?
1. What is your own definition of a curriculum? Write down your answer in the space provided?
• Curriculum has a broader and narrow sense of view. And for me, curriculum is not just about the
listing of subjects, it is the overall learning experience and outcomes of a student. Curriculum is
the plan or desired learning outcomes of the institutions. It focuses the goal of the institutions
and what they want to implement for their school. Curriculum will be the guide for the institutions
on what they will taught and what they want to achieve for the learning outcomes.

2. Do you have a traditional view of a curriculum, a progressive view or both? Explain your view based on
your definition.
• I both experience the traditional and progressive point of view. When I was in elementary all of
our subjects focused at the permanent studies, like math, English, science and Filipino also it’s
not students centered. We learned thru our teachers and based on the experience of our teacher
and they also taught what is just written in the book. It is more on intellectual learning. And when
the k-12 curriculum was implemented, I experienced the progressive view of curriculum, where
students are the one who explore. Students learn from experiences and materials that are given
are actualized by the learners. It is student centered curriculum, teachers are not the main source
of knowledge, they guide and facilitate students to learn new things.

The news tells about the U.S Embassy in the Philippines will launch an online training program to help
Filipino teachers adjust to new modes of instruction since face to face classes are prohibited in the country
due to pandemic crisis. In the said news, more than 8,000 teachers and school administrators are expected
to participate. In the program, a team of American specialist will deliver a series of virtual classes on the
implementation of various learning modalities. This program will help teacher and administrators to adapt
changes and plan a curriculum that will fit-in in this time of crisis.
“Course content includes guidance, methodology, instructional materials, and resources to assist with
the delivery of online and other face-to face classroom instruction, critical for continuing the education of
Filipino students during the Pandemic” the embassy said. As we face to todays pandemic, learnings should
not be stop. Curriculum needs guidance, trainings and planning to achieve the desired learning outcomes.
And as a curricularist who deliver and implement lessons to learners, we should be well trained and rea dy
to adapt changes. Since it is prohibited to have a face-to-face class as well as the school activities. Teachers
as a curricularist will innovates the curriculum, it requires knowledge, skills and experience that we can share
to our students.
Teachers who will participate at the said program will probably gain knowledge, skills and experience
that they can share and taught to their students. Also, they can apply some practices that can be done thru
online learning. Curriculum is the overall learning outcomes and as a curricularist we should implement
curriculum with a well-prepared knowledge and skills especially in this time of crisis, where every student
needs help for them to learn.

SELF-REFLECTION
Instruction: After learning from this lesson, how would you prepare yourself to become a teacher, using the
three approaches to curriculum? Write on the space below.

The three approaches to curriculum are big help for me to become an effective teacher. I’ve learned the
content, product and process is a way to teach effectively. It will help teachers to know the scope and
limitations in teaching. Content has also four ways of presenting the content in the curriculum, it includes
topical approach, concept approach, thematic approach and modular approach. These approaches will help
me as a teacher to deliver the content or body of knowledge to my students with a different approach
depending on the learner’s material. There is also a criterion in selecting a content that will help teachers to
engage with their students and students to engage with the lessons. These criteria will serve as a guide to
know the scope and limitations of a content. And curriculum content has a B.A.S.I.C principles which stands for
Balance, Articulation, Integration, Continuity and Scope. These B.A.S.I.C principle also helps me as a teacher
to understand well the content and effectively implement lessons to students as learners has their different
learning styles and to understand the lesson, teachers must consider these principles. I learned that in
choosing a content it should not be just about learning the subject itself, but also learning with experiences that
can be used in a real-life situation. And the process will not just a learning for students but it will also help me
to learn from my students. This will be the applied method for all the things they’ve learned the process will be
the way for me as a teacher to know if my students understand and acquire the knowledge from the content.
The process should result to learning outcomes. The teaching and learning process will always result to a
learning outcome. And lastly the product, it is what the students desire to achieve. It is the overall learning
outcomes and changes from the student.

I believe that learners learn effectively from a good teacher. A teacher who knows her students and a teacher
who believe in her students. These three approaches prepare me as a teacher and it will help me to effectively
teach the lesson in the future. This will be a guide for me to know how to approach my students.
