EARL COLLINS FOUNDATION

The Earl Collins Foundation of the Missouri-
Arkansas Kiwanis District of Kiwanis International
was originally the Earl A.Collins Memorial
Scholarship Fund. Establishment of the scholarship
fund was approved during the 1960 Missouri-
Arkansas District Convention in Saint Joseph,
Missouri, to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Earl A.
Collins, an educator, Past Governor and Secretary of
the Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District. Dr. Collins
began his career in education as a teacher and later
served as an administrator. He was on the faculty of
Central Missouri State College for 15 years and

Missouri State College for an additional
20 years. Earl was well known through his authorship
of many school textbooks and his research into and
writing on the history of Missouri and its peoples. One
of his best known books was “Legends and Lore of

Arkansas Governor in 1952. During his adminis-

Arkansas District’s annual activities. Dr. Collins was
the first salaried district secretary and KIWANIGRAM
editor, serving in this position from 1956 until his
death in 1960.
When the scholarship fund was established soon after
his death, it was suggested that each Kiwanis Club in
the District contribute $1.00 per member to the fund
with the interest to be given to deserving students
attending Southeast Missouri State College. The
recipients of the scholarships may now attend the
college or university of their choice. Beginning in the
2002-2003 academic year the scholarships were
increased from $500 to $750.00, with 23 scholarships
being awarded to high school seniors from the
Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District.
Currently, each Kiwanis Club contributing $2.00 per
member receives a banner patch to signify the club’s
contribution and desire to make an investment in the
leaders of tomorrow. Individuals are also encouraged
to make contributions to the fund as a tribute or
memorial to honor Kiwanians, friends, family, or
associates of Kiwanians. In 1985 BVK's own Dr.
Myral Coatney helped to establish a Charter Member
designation to recognize individuals or clubs that
made contributions of at least $1,000. The Fellow
Program, as it is now called recognizes clubs or
individuals that contributes at least $250.00 per year
over a maximum period of four years. Also, a lump
sum contribution of $1,000.00 will qualify for the
current “Fellow” program.
The current goal of the Foundation is to increase the
total endowment to at least $500,000. At that time, it
is hoped that additional funding can be given to the
MO-ARK Circle K and Key Club organizations. To
achieve this goal, Foundation Officers and Trustees are
encouraging Kiwanis Clubs and individuals to qualify
for the "Fellow Award."
