BDOC / GUNK PILLS - SOLUTION TO TOTAL LOST CIRCULATION.

This plug utilizes the fact that when water is mixed with a Bentonite-Diesel Oil Cement mixture, the
Bentonite and Cement hydrate rapidly and forms a strong solid material.

RECIPE (1-BBL of BDOC PILL):

 0.65 bbl/bbl diesel
 110 Ibs/bbl of bentonite
 205 Ibs/bbl of class G cement
 Density of pill = +/- 12.5 ppg

MIXING PROCEDURE:
 Pump required amount of diesel into batch tank. Quantity of diesel to be determined by volume
of pills required. Normally, a 30-bbl pill is sufficient, depending on the loss rate and formation
nature.
 Transfer 5-bbl of diesel down to cement unit to flush line.
 Fill up cement unit displacement tanks with diesel.
Remember: If the cement unit displacement tank is located above the engine (old version
pumper), this is not allowed. If the newer version of pumper like CPS-361, it is allowed provided
there is a 2" diesel line into the displacement, 6" from the bottom. You can only fill up 80% full (8-
bbl per 10-bbl tank) at one time to avoid spillage. If in doubt, please refer to Dowell SLPM
Standard 5, page 3.
 Mix bentonite into diesel in the batch mixer.
 Transfer cement into batch mixer. The final density of pill should be +/- 12.5 ppg.
Remember: In the process of mixing, please watch out the viscousity of the pill. If slurry
becomes too viscous, stop adding cement and be ready for treatment even though the final
weight has not been achieved. (ATTENTION: NO WATER AT ALL ALLOWED INTO THE
BATCH TANK BEFORE OF AFTER MIXING. FACILITY MUST BE PREPARED FOR RAINING
POSSIBILITY AS WELL).

The mixture will be very thick, and should be just pumpable.

PLACEMENT PROCEDURE:
 Pull string 100-150 ft above the loss zone. The distance coule be more, say 300-500 ft,
depending on the situation.
 Pump 10-bbl diesel at 5-6 bpm from the displacement tanks of the cement unit.
 Pump BDOC pill (volume as required) at 5-6 bpm from the batch tank with the cement unit.
 Pump 10-bbl at 5-6 bpm diesel spacer from the displacemen tank.
 Displace BDOC pill to bit at 6-7 bpm with mud.
 With BDOC pill at bit, close lower annular.
 Squeeze BDOC pill into open hole, with 3-4 bpm on drill string, and 1-2 bpm down the kill line.
 Normally, if BDOC pill works, you will see squeeze pressure increase. Monitor pressure closely to
avoid shocking the well.
 After acheiving the squeeze pressure, bleed backpressure on well.
 Open annular preventer and pump out of hole to previous casing shoe to displace any remaining
BDOC pill in the drill string into open hole.
 While pumping out of the hole to shoe, you might want to make use of some type of wiper plug to
clean the inner drill pipe as well. Our experience here shows that inner drill pipe will have layers
of cement shealth build-up, depending on number of pills pumped. It is very important to make
sure that the drill pipe is clean, before conducting any cement job to avoid the float equipment
being plugged up by cement shealth during a cement job. Maximize the use of foam wiper plug
while circulating the drill string clean. Depending on the BHST/BHCT, it is required to wait on
cement to set around 12-hr prior to continue drilling.

 It has been proven in the field that the hesitation squeeze method is more effective than running
squeeze method in curing TOTAL losses.
 The hesitation squeeze method allows the dehydration of small quantities of cement into the
fractures of formation. This procedure involves the intermittent application of pressure (at a rate
of 0.25 to 0.5 bbl/min), separated by an interval of 10 to 20 minutes for pressure leakoff due to
filtrate loss to the formation.
 The initial leakoff is normally fast because there is no filter cake. As the cake builds up and the
applied pressure increases, the filtration periods become longer and the difference between the
initial and final pressure becomes smaller, until at the end of the job when pressure leakoff
becomes negligible (see figure below).
 The slurry volumes necessary for this technique are usually much less than those
required for a running squeeze.
 A loose formation normally requires a long hesitation period to begin building squeeze pressure.
A first hesitation period of 30 minutes or more is not unreasonable. A much shorter initial
hesitation period (possibly 5 minutes) is normally sufficient for tight formation.

SETTING:

The plug should be allowed to set for at least 8 hours and preferably for 12 hours.
