tion of Calcium and Magnesium in drinking
water signify “Energy Content”. Reverse Osmosis
“RO” machines are very effective at cleaning the
water, but they remove Calcium and Magnesium

The developed countries – USA , Germany,
Russia, EU have shunned RO Systems for
producing drinking water. They largely depend
upon the filters with activated carbon, for purifi-
cation of drinking water. The RO Water Systems
in India and third world countries have been
mushrooming rampantly, due to vacuum in
regulations. And the unawareness about
unhealthiness of RO Water, even amongst the
educated and elite class in India, is being fueled
with fascinating and utterly deceptive TV Ads,
with celebrity endorsements.

That the WHO released a report in 1980, stating
that the demineralized or reverse osmosis water
“has a definite adverse influence on the animal
and human organism.”
That as just about everyone knows that RO

systems excel at removing water impurities, but
few are aware that they also remove the benefi-
cial minerals. In fact RO process removes 92-99%
of beneficial calcium and magnesium.

That the removal of essential elements ( Ca and
Mg) from water is a fatal side effect of RO
Process. And the trend of demineralization for
making up Ca and Mg , is not only a costly &
ecologically unfriendly , it dumps more minerals
into the water than your kidneys can digest and

That the RO is biologically inactive. This necessi-
tates its operation to be integrated with bacteria
removal device/disinfectant such as UV,
Bromine and Ozonation. It is a well-known fact
that the exposure to UV poses a potential risk for
skin cancer. Bromine is known to cause damage
to organs- such as liver, kidneys, lungs, brain and
can even damage DNA and cause cancer and
turn humans impotent. Even the ozonation
process oxidizes the Natural Organic Matter
(NOM) present in water and the ozonated water
may contain unhealthy bi-products.

That the tests conducted by Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre on large number of RO bottled
water samples collected from Mumbai, had
revealed that the concentration of Bromine , was
much higher than the WHO recommended
limits. And why they made no efforts for
advocating revision in IS 10500 for inclusion of
safe limits of Bromine in the Drinking Water
Specifications.

That the study conducted on short-term
exposure of a few months of consumption
of RO water in the Czech and Slovak popu-
lations, caused various health complaints.
Among these complaints were “cardiovas-
cular disorders, tiredness, weakness or
muscular cramps”, attributable to acute
deficiency of magnesium and calcium in
drinking water.

That the RO water low in calcium is associ-
ated with fracture in children and certain
neurodegenerative diseases and low
weight at birth and some types of cancer.

That when RO water is consumed, it also
leaches minerals from the body. This
means that the minerals being consumed
in food and vitamins are being urinated
away. Less minerals consumed plus more
minerals being excreted equals serious
negative side effects and big health prob-
lems. In a scientific study performed to see
if minerals consumed in food can make up
for the lack of minerals in reverse osmosis
water, scientists concluded, “ reduced min-
eral intake from water was not compensat-
ed by their diets…. Low-mineral water was
responsible for an increased elimination of
minerals from the body.”

mineral water) “ leads to the dilution of the
electrolytes dissolved in the body water.
Inadequate body water distribution
between compartments may compromise
the function of vital organs. Side effects at
the very beginning of this condition
include “tiredness, weakness and head-

lar cramps and impaired heart rate.”
