Packing for a Bushwalk

Ways of Minimising Weight

1. 2.
• The big 3: use a lighter backpack, tent/shelter (do
you need a tent or could you just use a tarp?) and/or
sleeping system (mat, sleeping bag etc.) You can
buy ultralight gear, however, it is expensive
• Spread the load – share items
• Pre-prepare your food, use dehydrated or freeze-
dried food, reduce waste
• Have a look at the weather and pack accordingly
• Only pack 1 or 2 pairs of clothing
• Take smaller containers of sunscreen or soap, or
share with someone
• Take microfibre towel
• Instead of taking a pillow, take a pillow-case and stuff
it with a jumper/clothes
• Plan the walks with water drops or carry SteriPENS
(gadget designed to sterilize water) or iodine tablets

REMEMBER WSLS – Waist, Shoulders, Load, Sternum Pack between 20-25% of your body weight!
