CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

A. CONDITIONAL SENTENCE
Conditional Sentence/Conditional Clause/If Clause consists of 3 types:
1. Type 1 (possibility and likely will be done)
In this type the If clause uses Present Tense (verb 1) and the Main Clause uses Modal1
(can, will, may). Dalam tipe ini masih sangat ada kemungkinan terjadi.
E.g.
If I study hard, I will achieve what I dream.
2. Type 2 (possibility but unlikely will be done)
In this type the If clause uses Past Tense (verb 2) and the Main Clause uses Modal 2
(could, would, might). Dalam tipe ini masih ada kemungkinan, tapi sangat sulit dan
hampir pasti tidak terjadi.
E.g.
If I chose English program, I could speak and understand its structure well.
3. Type 3 (impossibility)
In this type the If clause uses Past Perfect Tense (had verb 3) and the Main Clause
uses Modal 3 (could have verb3, would have verb 3, might have verb 3). Dalam tipe
ini sesuatu mustahil terjadi.
E.g.
If I had obeyed my friends suggestions, I might have been successful.

1
Note:
1. Nominal sentence for conditional sentence type 2 and 3 (nominal and verbal) can be
replace by inversion.
E.g.
If I had come > had I come, If I were you > Were I you.
2. There is conditional type 0 which meant as scientific fact (without using Modal).
E.g.
If I burn the Book, it becomes ash.
3. Negative conditional sentence (If Clause) can be changed into unless.
E.g.
If I hadn’t worked in hospital, I wouldn’t have known hospital’s hour.
Unless I had worked in hospital, I wouldn’t have known hospital’s hour.
4. Inconditional sentence type 2, we must not use was for nominal sentence.
E.g.
If I was you, ... (incorrect)
If I were you, ... (correct)

a. Equalizing Verbs and Modals

Dalam tipe soal ini kita hanya menjodohkan antara modal dan verb, jadi jika didalam soal
sudah ada modal, maka yang ditanyakan adalah verb-nya begitupun sebaliknya, tapi
harus sesuai jenis verb dan modal-nya. Perhatikan soal berikut:

1. If you .... me, I would have been very glad.

Modal 3
A. help
B. helped
C. had helped
D. would have helped
E. would help

2
Pembahasan:
Karena dalam soal sudah ada modal 3, maka jawaban yang paling tepat adalah verb
3, yaitu option C (had helped).

2. You will be operated tomorrow dawn if you .... it today.

A. pay
B. paid
C. had paid
D. would pay
E. will pay
Pembahasan:
Jawaban A, karena dalam soal sudah ada modal 1, maka jawaban yang paling tepat
adalah verb 1.

b. Asking for Fact

Tipe soal ini adalah tipe soal yang menanyakan fakta, perhatikan pattern dan soal
berikut:
Conditional Sentence Verb 2/modal 2 > Fact : Verb 1/Modal 1
Conditional Sentence Verb 3/Modal 3 > Fact : Verb 2/Modal 2

Note:
Jika ada conditional sentence type 1 ditanyakan makna atau faktanya, maka jawabannya
menggunakan ungkapan possibly, probably, perhaps dikarenakan faktanya belum dan
masih ada kemungkinan terjadi.
E.g.
If I learn harder, I will be successful. It means : I will possibly be a successful person.
