    Abstract

    DRESS methodology is the recent development in tunneling field. This method of tunneling is
    extremely effective for adverse geological condition due to exceptionally poor rock mass condition in
    surrounding area of tunnel opening. DRESS (Drainage-Reinforcement-Excavation-Support-Solution)
    methodology of tunneling is quite effective in water bearing fault zones of fragile Himalayan region.
    DRESS involves pre-drainage of ground ahead of face with long drainage holes and stabilization of the
    crown ahead of tunnel face by steel pipe umbrella arch, up to a predetermined length, followed by
    excavation in small steps by mechanical means and support thereof. This method has been successfully
    used in the construction of Rohtang Tunnel.
