of formwork to be used in consultation with the Structural Engineer, if required. Depending upon
the programmed, the number of repetitions will be decided.
External designers may be used for specific systems.
3. Availability of formwork will be checked with the Procurement Manager and decision will be taken
to buy, hire or reuse formwork material.
4. During fabrication of formwork shutters, all dimensions shall be cross-checked with a view to
avoiding corrective action during erection.
5. Paint reference numbers on all panels to ensure their use in correct positions.
6. Ensure that the props, shores, waling, bearers, clamps and tie rods are the right size and at the
correct spacing. The Formwork designer shall check the false work system with respect to load
imposed on it and design parameters as laid down in the specification.
7. Check that the false work is securely braced and is on a firm foundation.
8. Forms fastened to previously cast concrete must be tightly fixed to prevent grout loss. Cellular
foam plastic strips can be used to make a seal.
9. Check quality of shutter lining, tightness of bolts and wedges, built-in items, inserts and other
embedment’s.
10. Tie – rod holes to be made in the formwork shall be neat so that they can be patched or
plugged later on.
11. Particular attention will be paid to the rigidity and line of stop ends and joint formers.
12. Remove all tie-wire clippings and nails, which may stain both the formwork and the concrete.

level.
16. A prop should not be used if it is bent, creased or, rusted or has a bent head or base plate,
damaged pin etc.
17. Proper release of agent shall be used so that it can be removed without damaging the surface
finish of the concrete.
18. New timber and plywood forms shall be given first coat of the appropriate release agent 36
hours in advance, then a second coat just before they are used. Avoid excessive use of release agent
as this can cause staining or retardation of the concrete.
19. A close watch should be kept on all wedges and fastenings. Make sure that they do not work
loose. Grout loss is an indication that some movement has occurred.
20. When un- sleeve tie bars are being used, ease them slightly before the concrete sets, and
remove them as soon as it is safe.

The removal of concrete formwork also called as strike-off or stripping of formwork should be
carried out only after the time when concrete has gained sufficient strength, at least twice the stress
to which the concrete may be subjected to when the formworks are removed. It is also necessary
to ensure the stability of the remaining formwork during formwork removal.
When it is ensured that the concrete in the structural members has gained sufficient strength to
withstand the design load, only then formworks should be removed. If possible, the formworks
should be left for longer time as it helps in curing.

Equipment:

Drawings or design plans should include all revisions for the jack layout, shoring equipment
details, working decks, scaffolds, and all other related accessories. Once all those details are designed,
shoring equipment must be inspected prior to erection to determine that the equipment meets the
requirements specified in the formwork drawings. Do not use shoring equipment that is potentially
damaged or shows signs of damage. All formwork shoring equipment must be inspected immediately
prior to, during and immediately after concrete placement.

Inspect all components thoroughly and if you find weakened equipment, reinforce it
immediately. It is extremely important to check that all base plates, shore heads, extension devices,
and screws are firm and secured with the foundation and the form.

Concrete

Formwork used and designed for cast-in-place concrete requires special considerations. Due
to the significant weight that concrete adds to formwork and shoring equipment, it is important to
check that eccentric loads are located over members that have been designed for such loading. If
single-post shores are used one on top of another (tiered), then additional shoring requirements must
be met.

Cast-in-Place Concrete

Formwork used on cast-in-place operations needs to be carefully planned, designed and

inspected. Here is a list of guidelines and requirements for cast-in-place formwork.

When it's time to remove formwork, follow these recommendations:

 Do not remove forms and shores (except those that are used for slabs on grade and slip forms)
until the worker determines that the concrete has gained sufficient strength to support its
weight and superimposed loads.
 Verify concrete strength information against construction drawings, specifications, and testing
results. Testing must follow the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard
test method designed to determine the concrete compressive strength, and results must
indicate that the concrete has gained sufficient strength to support its weight and
superimposed loads.
