Scale Project Preparation Sheet
GOAL: Scale up a picture.
You will take a smaller picture and draw it at a larger size using the grid method.
Follow the step-by-step directions in this sheet to complete the project.
✤ PART 1: The Original Picture
❏ Choose a picture that you want to scale up for this project. Try to pick a picture
that has a lot of details in it. The picture must be appropriate for school.
❏ Staple, clip, or glue the original picture in the box below.
Picture must be 3 inches by 3 inches or smaller.
If you want to use a larger picture, please check with the teacher first.

----------------- length ------------------
What are the dimensions of your original picture? Use a ruler to measure. Include units
(inches (in), centimeters (cm), etc.).
Original Length: Original Width:
❏ Draw a grid on the original picture. Each square in the grid should be the same size.
How big is each square? Examples: 0.5" x 0.5" (½ in by ½ in), 1 cm by 1 cm
✤ PART 2: Calculations for Scaling Up
❏ Calculate how big the scaled-up picture will be by answering the questions
below.
1. What scale factor do you want to use? In other words, how many times bigger should
the scaled-up picture be? Recommended scale factor: 2 or 3
2. What are the dimensions of your scaled-up picture? Show your calculations in the
boxes and include units (inches, centimeters, etc.).
To find the answer, take the original dimensions and multiply by the scale factor.
Scaled-up Length = Original Length · Scale Factor Scaled-up Width = Original Width · Scale Factor
Scaled-up Length: Scaled-up Width:
3. How big will each square in the scaled-up grid be? Show your calculations in the box
and include units (inches, centimeters, etc.).
To find the answer, take the original square size and multiply by the scale factor.
Example: Original grid square is 0.5" x 0.5". Scale factor is 3.
⇒ Scaled-up square = 0.5" · 3 = 1.5" x 1.5"
✤ PART 3: Drawing the Scaled-up Picture
❏ On the back of this paper or another piece of paper, draw a scaled-up grid to use
for your scaled-up picture.
The grid should follow the dimensions you calculated in Part 2 #2. The squares in the grid
should be the size you calculated in Part 2 #3. All squares in the grid should be the same
size.
❏ Draw the scaled-up picture in the scaled-up grid. Try to make your drawing as
accurate as possible. This means that the scaled-up picture should look exactly like the
original picture, just larger. Take your time and pay attention to the details.
❏ Color in your drawing. The colors in the original picture should match the colors in the
scaled-up picture. If your original picture is in black-and-white, you may do one of the
following: 1) Color in the original picture and then color the scaled-up picture the same
way OR 2) Use pencil to shade in the scaled-up picture to match the original picture.
❏ Turn in your Scale Project by Wednesday, January 9, 2019. This Preparation Sheet
and the scaled-up picture should be turned in together. Make sure your name is on
everything.
