2 M new voters expected as registration resumes today

MANILA, Philippines — Voter registration resumes today, 10 months before the May 11, 2020
barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is expecting two million new registrants during the two-
month registration period that ends on Sept. 30, according to Comelec spokesman James Jimenez.

“(Today) is the first day of voter registration... Comelec offices will be open on Saturdays unless there
is a scheduled satellite registration for that day,” Jimenez said.

He noted that aside from registering as new voters, those who have been delisted from the Voters
List can apply for the reactivation of their registration.

Jimenez added that as a policy, the registration of those who failed to vote in the 2018 barangay and
SK polls and in the May 2019 local and national elections had already been deactivated.

Voters applying for transfer of registration or correction in the entries in their registration records can
also apply during this period.

“This includes change or correction of entries, like misspelled names, wrong birthdates, wrong gender
and so on,” Jimenez said.

The poll body will also be conducting mall registration to reach out to more voters.

Palace open to resuming Dengvaxia use

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang is open to making the Dengvaxia vaccine available again if
experts declare it to be effective in addressing the rising cases of dengue fever in the country.

Former health secretary and now Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin has asked the Duterte administration to
revive the Dengvaxia vaccination program, saying the vaccine would have prevented the dengue
outbreak in some provinces.

Garin said the vaccination program, which was launched while she was health chief, intended to cut
dengue-related hospitalization by 80 percent and to reduce the severe cases by 93%.

"If the weight of findings show that there is benefit using Dengvaxia against dengue, then certainly the
government should consider it," presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a chance interview
Wednesday.

"We're always open to anything that will benefit the Filipino people. We're not closed to any
suggestion," he added.
Panelo said the proposal to resume the vaccine program has to be discussed "thoroughly" and
"extensively."

"We need experts to support any call for the return of Dengvaxia," the presidential spokesman said.

The Duterte administration stopped the P3.5 billion vaccination program after its manufacturer French
company Sanofi released a study stating that Dengvaxia could increase the health risks of those who
have yet to be infected by dengue. Garin is one of the officials facing charges over the deaths of
children who were given the vaccine.

The health department has recorded more than 106,000 cases of dengue fever this year.

Pagdagsa ng Chinese banta sa seguridad

MANILA, Philippines — Idineklara kahapon ni National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. na
banta sa pambansang seguridad ang pagdagsa ng mga Chinese national.

“As the National Security Adviser, I have the tendency to look at it as a threat,” sabi ni Esperon.

“I’m on the cautious side. When foreigners, regardless of nationality, come in, and their intent is not
clear. Or when some of them are undocumented, or have false documentation.”

nasusunod, bakit nagkakaganoon?” tanong niya. “Mayroon bang diperensya ang ating immigration
officers?

mga turista, “There is always the other side of the coin. Hindi tayo dapat magpabaya.”

Sa datos ni Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez, kung papatawan ng buwis ang mga bagong dating
na Chinese national, kikita ang Pilipinas ng P2 bilyon kada buwan.
