Background of the Study ROD
UCT
ION
“Fathers are just like coconut, hard on the outside but soft and sweet from

inside.”-BoDebo.

According to Compton’s Encyclopedia in 1996, it says that: Coconut

production plays an important role in the international economy of South-East

Asia. Countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia,

Indonesia, and Philippines are well known as coconut planters. Coconuts are

known for its versatility as seen in many uses of its different parts. It also has

cultural and religious significance in many societies. Copra is the dried meat or

kernel of the coconut. Traditionally de-husking and de-shelling of coconut is

operated manually to get copra/coconut meat out. But it consumes more time

and more physical exertion of effort for the workers. The objective is to reduce

time consumption and physical exertion of effort by introducing a machine to de-

husk and de-shell the coconut and it is operated with less wastage of copra. This

machine reduces the accidents that may happen during de-husking and de-

shelling manually.

The machine proposed in this work basically does two processes. They

are de-husking and de-shelling. De-husking is the process of removing the husk

from the nut, while de-shelling is the process of removing the shell from the

coconut meat/kernel. Conventionally, the de-husking and de-shelling is carried

out manually by spikes or a sharp machete, it shows that there are no superior

machines develop to handle the coconut. Coconut de-husking and de-shelling is

the most fundamental issue in terms of efficient labor and improving productivity.

The aim of this project is to reduce the human efforts and to increase the

rate of de-husking and de-shelling the coconut. This machine takes into

consideration the dangers, hazards and risks involved in de-husking and de-

shelling the coconut which will be efficient, productive, less exertion of effort,

easy to use and most importantly cost effective in production, maintenance and

repair.

Today there are various techniques used for de-husking and de-shelling

the coconut. These techniques have limitations in process. Despite of that these

techniques are widely used for de-husking and de-shelling the coconut. Those

techniques are,

 Manual de-husking and de-shelling

a) By using machete or spike

b) By using traditional tool

Many problems occur while operating these conventional methods. The

coconut de–husking and de-shelling machine eliminates or reduces the problems

and limitations in these conventional techniques. These problems might be

injurious or hazardous for the worker. But in the coconut de-husking and de-

shelling machine, these problems are eliminated. This leads to the safety,

efficiency and ease in removing the coconut husk and shell.

Objectives of the Study

General Objectives

Generally, this study aims to design, develop, innovate and construct an

improvised and operational COCONUT DE-HUSKING and DE-SHELLING

MACHINE using small gasoline engine as prime mover.

Specific Objectives

1. Design and develop a single feed coconut de-husking machine.

2. Design the innovated coconut shell remover.

3. Construct the designed mechanical parts and encasement of

the machine.

4. Determine the efficiency of the coconut de-husking and de-

shelling machine.

5. Evaluate the acceptability of the machine in terms of:

5.1. Functionality.

5.2. Aesthetic.

5.3 Reliability.

5.4 Usablity.
Significance of the Study

This study offers ease and convenience to the coconut farmers/workers by

eliminating their effort of removing the husk and shell of the coconut. This serves

as a model of de-husking and de-shelling that uses the combination of gasoline

engine and mechanical techniques in order to function.

Others studies that deal with automation and mechanical aspects could

make use of this study, as their guide either for corrective or comparative

purpose to come with a sound result of their own studies.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the development and innovation of the coconut de-

husking and de-shelling machine using small gasoline engine as prime mover.

The machine is only designed for a single feed in de-husking and de-shelling the

coconut. Furthermore, it aimed to determine the efficiency of the machine in

terms of its speed in de-husking and de-shelling the coconut.

Hence, it is usable to lessen human effort/intervention for industry that has

a great quantity of coconut to de-husk and de-shell in every operation.

This study was constructed at SULTAN KUDARAT STATE UNIVERSITY-

Isulan Campus, Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

Top 10 Largest coconut producing countries in the world in 2018

The long and strong coconut tree has been an essential flora in many

cultures all around the world. Every part of the tree, from top to bottom, has a

purpose and these were discovered by the early man living near them.

Though the fruit was difficult to harvest at first due to the height to which

the tree grows, humans eventually found ways to harvest the fruit successfully.

The leaves were used for shelter, the husk of the coconut as fire fodder, water to

parch thirst and the milky insides as food; this magnificent tree was called the

tree which provides all necessities of life.

Even though civilization has made huge developments in technology and

way of life, one still could not live without this resource. Coconut plantations have
a huge market out there, especially in the tropical regions where this tree is

famous. Following are the top 10 largest coconut producing countries in the world

in 2018.

10. Malaysia (646,932 tons of coconut products)

9. Thailand (1,010,000 tons of coconut products)

8. Mexico (1,064,400 tons of coconut products)

7. Papua New Guinea (1,200,000 tons of coconut products)

6. Vietnam (1,303,822 tons of coconut products)

5. Sri Lanka (2,513,000 tons of coconut products)

4. Brazil (2,890,286 tons of coconut products)

3. India (11,930,000 tons of coconut products)

2. Philippines (15,353,200 tons of coconut products)

1. Indonesia (18,300,000 tons of coconut products)

The Daily Records Latest News around the Globe States that:

Indonesia is the world leader of coconut production. The majority of the country's

coconuts are produced in the province of North Sulawesi. Many of the coconuts

produced in Indonesia are exported overseas. Indonesia is also one of the

world's top producers of pineapples.

Problems affecting the coconut industry

According to Josefina C. Suharto in 1994, she states that: Several

factors have been attributed to this situation including:

 Low yield, low return

 increased hectarage of senile plantations

 Pests and diseases

 Natural calamities

 Indiscriminate cutting of coconut trees

 Conversion of coconut farms into the production of other profitable

crops

 Decreasing coconut hectarage as a result of urbanization and housing

development

 Fragmentation of coconut lands

 Low & fluctuating price of coconut products

Compared to most other oil bearing crops, yield from coconut is very low.

On the average, one hectare of coconut yields about a ton as compared to oil

palm's four tons. The situation is further worsened by the increasing area of

coconut getting senile. Numerous pests and diseases have further reduced

productivity. In the Philippines, there is cadang-cadang. In India, coconut

plantations are affected by root wilt and an effective control measure has yet to

evolve. According to reports, the disease is causing an annual loss of 1000

million nuts or about 150 000 tons of copra equivalents, in Kerala State. In
Indonesia, there is the natuna wilt. Bud rot disease is, however, common to most

countries. But in some cases, the cause of certain disease has not been

identified. Natural calamities, which most often are unpredictable, likewise cause

heavy toll on the industry. The spate of typhoons which hit the Philippines a year

ago, coupled with the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, forced the Philippines to revise

downward its estimated production for 1996.

Though of recent development, the indiscriminate cutting of coconut

stands, particularly in the Philippines, and the alarming decline of coconut

hectarage due to fragmentation of coconut land in Sri Lanka have likewise

brought a heavy toll on the country's respective coconut industry. PCA

Administrator David reported that 20 million trees have been cut down in just a

few years. He added that if cutting continued unabated, it would wipe out the

coconut trees in 50 years. Sri Lanka's division of coconut hectarage likewise

resulted in a land loss of about 4050 ha annually. The conversion of coconut

lands to commercial or industrial uses due to mushrooming of economic growth

areas is also a major contributor to declining hectarage. For example, an

industrial estate being proposed in Northern Mindanao, the Philippines will affect

84 000 hectares of coconut land. The Government of Malaysia's policy not to

increase its present coconut area also greatly contributed to the further decline of

the country's coconut hectarage.

In the world market, the wide price fluctuation of coconut oil is a common

occurrence. For instance, the average coconut oil price in 1984 was US$ 1156/t

compared to US$ 287/t in 1986. This price fluctuation affects the trade, and most
of its impact is felt by the small-scale farmers. While the benefits of higher prices

are not passed to them in that proportion, lower prices certainly affect them.

These price fluctuations are not so common in the case of other vegetable oils.

Price fluctuations have been the result of a number of reasons, one of which is

unstable supply. Customers tend to turn to more stable supplies of vegetable oils

when the price fluctuations are considerable.

98/ch03.htm)

Need for Mechanical Coconut Machinery

The number 1 concern of the coconut farmers/workers is the scarcity of

skilled labor/worker. That is why Josefina C. Suharto in 1994 pointed out that:

The need for specific manual skills is creating problems in the coconut industry.

Most of the coconuts producing countries are finding it difficult to recruit tree

climbers, most likely the de-huskers and de-shellers of the coconut. Plucking

coconut by climbing is a skilled job too, the same as through with the de-husking

and de-shelling. The entire job is a hazardous one, particularly so during rainy

days. Once the coconuts are plucked and picked, they need to be de-husked.

One has to be physically strong and has to be an expert in de-husking.

Otherwise, there is the possibility of one's hands being pierced by the iron stake.
The next step of removing the shells from the nuts pose also some problems,

and again call for some training.

98/ch03.htm)

Importance of De-Husking and De-Shelling Machine

The importance of coconut has no doubt in the tropical region. The whole

tree is very valuable and can be formed into many products and usages. To

extract the meat of the coconut it requires De-husking (removing of husk from the

shell) and De-Shelling. Manual De-husking and De-shelling using sharp

blade/machete is laborious, dangerous and time consuming. In addition the labor

shortage in agriculture is critical. Therefore, the development of mechanical

coconut De-husking and De-Shelling is necessary. The machine consists of

gasoline engine (as prime mover), rollers with vertical sharp spikes.

As technology is getting wide and improving, there are lots of inventions and

technology as part of human life nowadays. The De-Husking and De-Shelling

machine is best example of it, this machine is use to De-Husk and De-Shell the

coconut in its easiest way. Its importance is to utilize human effort because of its

ability to produce. It does not require lots of workers. Most importantly, this

machine is too facile to use compared how they De-Husk and De-Shell the

coconut before using a man made tool/material.

The coconut farmers/workers are facing problems in using the traditional

tool/conventional techniques to De-Husk and De-Shell the coconut. There are

many advantages that can be benefit from this coconut De-Husking and De-

Shelling machine. This newly developed and innovated machine helps us to De-

Husk and De-Shell the coconut in the easiest way. Moreover, it is safe to be use,

it saves energy, it saves time, it’s low cost, and efficient.

Thus, this machine is capable for the coconut farmers/workers to simply

De-husk and De-shell the coconut.
