Assigned: 16/2/18
Due: At the beginning of the sixth lecture on 22/2/18.

1. Consider a free N = (2, 2) U (1) gauge multiplet with Lagrangian

Add to the Lagrangian the following deformation
Z
δL = −ζ dθ̄σ a dθΣa = ζD , (1.2)

where

The deformation in (1.2) is referred to as a “Fayet-Iliopoulos term” (usually called an FI
term for short).

(a) [8 points] Using the N = (2, 2) supercharges, Qα and Q̄α , explicitly check that (1.2)
is SUSY invariant when integrated over t.

(b) [4 points] Give an argument why (1.2) is SUSY invariant just using dimensional
analysis (i.e., do not explicitly use the supercharges). To do this, set ∂t and the gauge
field to have scaling dimension 1. Then, use the fact that the supercharges have scaling
dimension 1/2.

(c) [4 points] Consider adding two chiral multiplets charged under the U (1) gauge symmetry

6 0. What should the relative signs of ζ
Solve the equations of motion for D keeping ζ =
and q be in order for there to be a solution to the equation D = 0? What is the resulting
geometry? Be sure to take U (1) gauge transformations into account.

2. [4 points] Recall that a chiral superfield of N = (2, 2) SUSY, ϕ(t, θα , y), (with y an
appropriate combination of t, θα , and θ̄α ) can be defined as a representation of N = (2, 2)
that has the following component expansion
√ α
ϕ(t, y) = φ(t, y) + 2θ ψα (t, y) + θα θα F (t, y) , (1.5)

Suppose we have two chiral superfields ϕ1 (t, θ, y) and ϕ2 (t, θ, y). Check whether ϕ1 (t, θ, y) +
ϕ2 (t, θ, y) and ϕ1 (t, θ, y)ϕ2 (t, θ, y) are chiral by trying to expand them as in (1.5).
