Assignment #1
Define the self based on the following philosophers’ view

 Socrates, Plato, Augustine

 Socrates believed that the self exists in two parts. One part is physical,
tangible aspect of us. Socrates believed that when we are in the
physical realm, we are alive and our body and soul are attached,
therefore making both parts of our self-present in the physical realm.
 Plato believed into 3 parts; the body, the mind and the soul. The body
is the physical part of the body that is only concerned with the
material world, and through which we are able to experience the
world we live in.
 Augustine, sense of self is his relation to God.

 Descartes, Locke, Hume and Kant

 Descartes believed the mind is the seat of our consciousness. Because
it houses our drives, intellect and passions, it gives us our identity and
our sense of self
 Locke considered personal identity to be founded on consciousness.
Therefore, self-identity is not based on the soul. One soul may have
various personalities. Neither is self-identity founded on the body
substance, argues Locke, as the body may change while the person
remains the same.
 Hume suggests that the self is just a bundle of perceptions, like links in
a chain. Hume argues that our concept of the self is a result of our
natural habit of attributing unified existence to any collection of
associated parts.
 Kant presents apperception as a means to consciousness to one’s self.
Inner sense is not pure apperception.

 Freud, Ryle, Churchland, Ponty

 The ego and self in the thought of Sigmund Freud, the self-one’s
person as object of one’s narcissistic or aggressive cathectic
investment; the person one believes, wishes or hopes oneself to be, as
distinct from the actual object, one’s(or another’s) actual person.
Sigmund Freud’s Layers of the Self:
Id, Ego, Super Ego
 Rather than dualism, Churchland holds to materialism, the belief that
nothing but matter exists. When discussing the mind, this means that
the physical brain, and the mind, exists. Adding to this, the physical
brain is where we get our sense of self.
 Rationalism asserts that reason and mental perception, rather than
physical senses and experience, are the basis of knowledge and self.

At
