Proposed ‘No Homework’ Policy; Good or Bad?

Homework, or a homework assignment, is a set of tasks assigned to students by their

teachers to be completed outside the class. Common homework assignments may include
required reading, writing or typing project, mathematical exercises to be completed, information
to be reviewed before a test, or other skills to be practiced. The basic objectives of assigning
homework to students are the same as schooling in general: to increase the knowledge and
improve the abilities and skills of the students, to prepare them for upcoming (or complex or
difficult) lessons, to extend what they know by having them apply it to new situations, or to
integrate their abilities by applying different skills to a single task. Homework also provides an
opportunity for parents to participate in their children's education. Homework is designed to
reinforce what students have already learned. It enhances the knowledge on what the student
learned from school, and it is also beneficial for improving the capability of a child to do such
school works. But, there are some instances that the students can’t handle the homework and it
sometimes caused stress or depression. Very high amounts of homework cause students'
academic performance to worsen, even among older students. Overloaded homework makes
student drain and they will not have enough time for themselves.

Now, Senator Grace Poe and 2 other representatives of different cities are banning the
teachers to give homework to students. “All primary and secondary schools in the country shall
not allow teachers to give any network or assignments to students from Kinder to Grade 12 on
weekends," the bill read. . According to them, under the proposed measure, teachers may only
assign homework to students on weekends provided that it is minimal and will not require more
than four hours to be completed. The DepEd states that the learners will have quality time with
their parents, family and friends if there is limitation on giving homework to a reasonable
quantity on school days and eliminating the same during the weekends. The said bill would
allow the students to find balance in their academic growth and personal growth by having
ample time for enjoying activities with their families.

Some teachers disagree with the policy because according to them homework was all
about discipline, responsibility and continuity of learning. The things that should be banned are
the things that hinder the student from learning and studying such as social media and
computer games, but not homework. The students do not have initiate discipline, if the teachers
didn’t tell them to read a specific content they will not read it.

If this policy will be signed and turned into a law, many students will have difficult time in
school. They have to accomplish the task given by their teachers in their class hours; they will
not have enough time to make their outputs better like when they are doing it outside the
campus. In just one hour they have to present their speech and their report that are given at the
same day. Also the students might be lazier and not responsible enough because they know
that they will not have this homework that can assess their own capability and understanding
about the lesson.
