Background Information - as of now, you know that the cell is a “little machine of sorts” with
parts (organelles) that are designed to perform specific functions, much like that of an
automobile. Take the engine out of a car, and it will not work properly, much like that of the
nucleus of the cell. This is an analogy (comparison) using the structure (part/organelle) and
relating it to its function (what it does).
1. Color the animal cell and the organelles that have been given to you.
2. Cut and paste them into the cell (they WILL fit).
3. Cut out/paste the entire cell into the center of construction paper.
4. Create labels/name the different parts (outside the cell) and draw arrows to point to the
part inside the cell.
5. After you’ve labeled the organelles, ALSO write their functions (ex. Nucleus- part that is
responsible for controlling the cell
6. Using a magazine, cut out a picture of an object that has a similar function (use) as each
cell organelle. Write an analogy/comparison using LIKE that relates your picture to the
function of the organelle. FOR EXAMPLE: The nucleus is LIKE the human BRAIN because
it is the control center for the human body.
7. Draw a line from the definition label to the similar function picture.
