Magnetic force on a Current carrying Conductor

Objectives:
- Describe the magnetic force on a current carrying conductor.
- Devise a right-hand rule in determining direction of magnetic force of a current carrying conductor.
Materials:
- 3 V dry cell or DC power supply,
Copper rod, U- Magnet, connecting
wires, wooden stand (iron ring
stand)
Procedure:
1. set up the electromagnetic swing
assembly as shown, with the North pole of
the U-shaped magnet oriented above.
2. Close the circuit momentarily.

Q1. In which direction does the conductor or copper wire move (in reference to the magnet)? _____away from the
magnet or moves outward the u shaped magnet_.

Q2. Illustrate at a common point on the conductor the direction of the magnetic force (F) on the conductor, direction of
conventional current, and magnetic field (β). Where is the magnetic force directed (in reference to the magnet)?

3. Flip/ reverse the connection of the copper wire to the battery of the power source. Close the circuit momentarily.

Q3. Illustrate at a common point on the conductor the direction of the magnetic force (F) on the conductor, direction of
conventional current, and magnetic field (β).
Where is the magnetic force directed (in reference to the magnet)?
___________________towards the magnet or inward_.

Q4. What are the effects of reversing the direction of current on the direction of Force?
_________reversing the direction of current by changing the positive to negative and vice versa will also reverse the
direction of force, does the conductor move away or outwards from the magnet.
4. Reverse the polarity of magnet by turning upside down.
Q5. Is there a different in the movement of the copper wire?
Yes, reversing the polarity of the magnet will change the direction of magnetic force on the wire.
5. Increase the current in the circuit by adding two or more dry cells. Observe how far the copper wire swings each time
you add a dry cells to the circuit. Remember that as the number of dry cell increases, the current in the circuit also
increases.
Q6. What does increasing the current through the rod have on the force exerted on it?
__________increasing the current does the force exerted or magnetic force.

6. Place or add a similar magnet on the set up. Switch on the current and observe how far the copper wire swings.
Q7. How does changing the length of the copper rod WITHIN the magnetic field affect the force exerted by the field on
the rod?
_________if the length of copper rod within the magnetic field increases the force become s stronger.

Q8. What factors affects the magnitude of force in an electromagnet?

________stregth of a current, strength of magnetic field, and length of conductor

Q9. Describe or state the relationship between the current , force and magnetic field.
______as the current is increased the magnetic field and force also increase.
