CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS)
1. Introduction
As measure of ensuring quality, the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) has called for reforms in the
Universities by way of frequent curricula revisions, introduction of choice based credit system, enhancing reliance
on internal assessment, encouraging research, and reforming governance of institutions. Taking cue from these
recommendations, Acharya Nagarjuna University has decided to implement the choice-based credit system (CBCS)
from the academic year 2013-14 for all the post-graduate courses (As approved by the 68th Academic Senate at
its meeting on 27-03-2013).
2. Why Choice Based Credit Based System?
• To provide mobility of students
• To provide wider choice for the students in the current system
• To make making the curriculum interdisciplinary.
• To enhance skills by including project work, entrepreneurship and vocational training.
• To improve the employability of students.
• To collaborate with the industry to foster innovations.
3. Components of CBC System
• Credit system
• Comprehensive continuous assessment
• Grading
4. What is a credit?
The term ‘Credit’ refers to the weightage given to a course, usually in relation to the instructional hours
assigned to it. For instance, a five hour course per week is assigned five credits, four hour course per week is
assigned four credits and two hour course per week is given two credits. However, in no instance the credits of a
course can be greater than the hours allotted to it in the normal circumstances. It measures the volume of content
to be delivered in the course being studied. A credit of a course also indicates the weightage of a course for
calculating Grade Point Average. Thus, in each course credits will be assigned on the basis of the number of hours
required per week for lectures/tutorials/lab work/field work to complete the course in a single semester. More
specifically:
1 credit = 1 hour of direct teaching / week
1 credit = 2 hours of lab work /week
1 credit = 2 hours of field work /project /week
Thus, 1 credit course requires 1 hour per week during a 16 week semester and accordingly a 4 credit
course requires 4 hours per week during a 16 week semester.
5. How is a Credit Measured?
Every one hour of lecture session/week amounts to 1 credit per semester. A minimum of two hour session
of Tutorial or Practical/Practice session per week amounts to 1 credit per semester. A course of study may have
only lecture component or tutorial or only practical/practice component or field work/project work/tour; or combination
of any of these components. The total credit earned by a student at the end of semester upon successful completion
of the course is usually described as: L+T+P. The credit pattern of the course is indicated in L: T: P format. For a
4 credit course the format could be:
(a) 4:0:0 1:2:1 1:1:2 1:0:3 1:3:0 (b) 2:1:1 2:2:0 2:0:2 3:1:0 3:0:1 (c) 0:2:2 0:4:0 0:0:4 0:1:3 0:3:1
79
The concerned BOS will choose the convenient credit pattern for every course, based on the requirement.
However, generally a course shall be for 4 or 5 credits.
6. Relationship between number of credits and marks per paper
Though credits are not directly related to marks, as a rule of thumb, we may consider 1 credit being
equivalent to 25 marks. A theory paper with 4 credits may be assigned 100 marks. The concerned BOS will
choose the convenient credit pattern and marks for every course, based on their requirement. Generally a course
having 4 credits shall have 100 marks for theory paper and practical paper with 2 credits shall be assigned 50
marks. There may be some non-credit (NC) courses also, for which credits can be assigned, and they are to be
completed satisfactorily; though not included in the grading.
7. CBCS Rules & Regulations as approved by the Academic Senate
(vide 68th Meeting of the AS held on 27-3-2013).
7.1 Evaluation
The performance of a student in each course is evaluated in terms of percentage of marks with a provision
for conversion to grade points. Evaluation for each course shall be done by a continuous internal assessment by
the concerned course teacher as well as by an end semester examination and will be consolidated at the end of
the course. The components for continuous internal assessment are: Two tests (20 Marks); Seminar / Quiz (5
Marks); Attendance (5 Marks) Total = 30 Marks
In addition to continuous evaluation component, the end semester examination, which will be a written-type
examination of at least 3 hours duration, would also form an integral component of the evaluation. The ratio of
marks to be allotted to continuous internal assessment and to end semester examination is 30: 70. The evaluation
of laboratory component, wherever applicable, will also be based on continuous internal assessment and on an
end-semester practical examination.
7.2. Grading:
Once the marks of the continuous internal assessment and end-semester examinations for each of the
courses are available, they will be added. The marks thus obtained will then be graded as per details provided in
Table-1. From the first semester onwards the total performance within a semester is indicated respectively by
Grade Point Average (GPA). After evaluation, assignment of Grade letter and Grade point (GP) to every paper is
allotted as shown below (Table-1) at the end of each semester.
Table-1
7.3. Computation of SGPA
In each semester, Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) shall be computed in all semesters as shown
below (Table-2).
80
Table-2
Similarly,
SGPA (Semester -2) = 7.4;
SGPA (Semester -3) = 8.4;
SGPA (Semester-4) = 8.6
7.4. Computation of CGPA
(i) At the end of the course, Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) shall be calculated as follows:
Conversion of CGPA to Percentage: Aggregate percentage (AP) = CGPA x 9.5
For example, if CGPA is 7.85, the Aggregate Percentage (AP) = 7.85 X 9.5 = 74.58
(i) A science student has to secure a minimum of ‘E’ Grade in each paper and also a minimum SGPA of 6.0
points (D Grade) in any Semester to clear that Semester. Suppose any student gets ‘E’ Grade in two or
more papers but fails to get an overall SGPA of 6.0 (D Grade), then he/she is free to reappear any of the
paper(s) in which the student got E Grade of his/her choice in the subsequent examination(s).
(ii) In case of Arts, Commerce, Law and other Social Sciences, a student has to secure a minimum of ‘E’ Grade
in each paper and in Semester also.
(iii) In order to fulfill “Choice Based” System, every student shall choose two Non- core papers one each in 2nd
and 3rd semesters; in addition to the core papers prescribed for the course in which he/she was admitted
and these two papers shall be chosen from other disciplines.
(iv) The grades secured for the Non-Core papers will not be considered in the computation of CGPA, but student
should get minimum of ‘E’ Grade to clear the Non-core papers and will be vividly displayed in the transcript
and this will indicate his/her exposure to other disciplines, which will have added advantage in placements.
(v) The departments shall have to design the time-table in such a way that the core papers are to be accommodated
from Monday to Friday and Saturday is to be reserved for Non – Core papers in 2nd and 3rd semesters.

University. He said that there is an urgent need to move away from the Euro-centric approach of Social Sciences
being practiced both in India and abroad in order to study Indian social and political phenomena.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K.V. Rao, who was in chair, highlighted the need to develop an independent
paradigm to enable us to capture Indian reality. Director of the Centre N.Anjaiah, said that this lecture programme
was eighth in the series organized by Dr.K.R.R.Mohan Rao Centre for scientific Socialism.
Lectures by Prof. Ramkrishna Bhattacharya

theme “Emergence of Materialism in India” on December 30th & 31st, 2013. The resource person was Prof.
82
Ramkrishna Bhattacharya, Emeritus Fellow in English, UGC, New Delhi and an internationally known authority
on Lokayata studies. In the first lecture, he traced origins of philosophical materialism in India and its initial
struggle with idealism to an important text of Upanishadic tradition i.e Katha Upanishad.
In his second lecture Prof. Bhattacharya examined the philosophical views of Jabali of Ramayana and tried
to prove that they were actually materialist views which have taken a definite shape against the backdrop of Ajita
Kesakambali’s world outlook. This two day programme, which is the ninth in the series being organized by
Dr.K.R.R Mohan Rao Centre for Scientific Socialism, was chaired by N.Anjaiah, Director of the Centre for Scien-
tific Socialism.
Lecture by Prof.Sobhanlal Data Guptha
Prof.Sobhanlal Data Guptha, Kolkata, gave a lecture organized by Dr.K.R.R.Mohana Rao Centre for
Scientific Socialism on February 6th, 2014. The developments unleashed in the last decade of last century in the
erstwhile socialist world made many people all over the world believe the proclamations like ‘End of Socialism’,
‘End of Ideology’ as natural. Again the developments that are taking place, particularly the recent crisis unfolded
in America, made people revert to the theory of Marxism and the solutions being offered by its exponents, particu-
larly by thinkers like Rosa Luxemburg, Antonio Gramsci, Nikholai Bukharin, he explained. Dr.Datta Gupta, in his
elaboration of these aspects of continental traditions of Marx and his later day followers, made it clear that revival
of a humanist, yet revolutionary, democracy, outlined by Marxist tradition is necessary. The meeting was chaired
by Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Lecture by Prof.M.S.S.Pandian
Prof.M.S.S.Pandian of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, delivered a talk under Occasional Lecture
Series organised by Prof. K.Satchidananda Murty Centre for Studies in Afro-Asian Philosophies on March 24th,
2014. The old understanding of the relationship between caste and democracy as being irreconcilably opposed to
each other needs to be looked at with a critical eye, he said. Dr.Pandian was of the opinion that engaging with
three paradoxes arising out of the interaction between caste and democracy will elicit our caution both about
democracy as a political arrangement of our times as well as the role of caste in polities without discounting the
importance of either. They are (i) modes of censoring caste talk in democracy (ii) modes of resisting the same by
subordinated castes, and (iii) the act of writing caste into law as part of democratic politics. The meeting was
chaired by Prof.K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Lecture by Prof. A. Rama Murthy
Prof.A.Rama Murthy, delivered the third Memorial Lecture in memory of late Prof. K.Satchidananda Murty
organized by Acharya Nagarjuna University on January 24th, 2014. The concept of the Brahman as elucidated by
both western and eastern traditions, if properly interpreted, understood and applied to contemporary development
at global level, can easily remove divisive and separatist tendencies prevailing among the people, he said. In a well-
attended meeting, chaired by Prof.K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Rama Murthy, former student
of Prof.K.S.Murthy at Andhra University tried to infuse new meaning into the concept of Brahma and harped on the
need to follow its import from culture specific free angle.

INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL (IQAC)
(A Post - Accreditation Quality Sustenance Activity)
Acharya Nagarjuna University was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)
in 2003 with B++ for the first time. As per the guidelines of the NAAC every accredited Higher Educational
Institution has to establish an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Accordingly Acharya Nagarjuna University
has established IQAC soon after assessment by NAAC in 2003. It was inaugurated by Dr. V. S. Prasad, the then
Director of NAAC. Acharya Nagarjuna University is one of the foremost accredited educational institutions to have
established IQAC for a continuous monitoring of quality education
Apart from the basic objectives of IQAC, some of its functions are:
Recording and monitoring quality measures of the institution; acting as a nodal agency of the institution for
quality related activities; Preparation of Annual Quality Assurance Report, Half-yearly Report and such other
reports as may be decided from time to time. IQAC also shoulders the responsibility of other quality assurance
activities of the Campus that include maintaining and processing the Career Advancement Schemes of Faculty on
a continuous basis. It promotes the policy of imparting quality education in the institutions affiliated to Acharya
Nagarjuna University. The necessary database useful for presentation at Governmental and other levels to assess
the quality performance of the University is also being undertaken by IQAC. It is also involved in distributing
Questionnaires to the students to get their evaluation of faculty and the courses. The results of the feedback
analysis are then circulated to the faculty.
An associated advisory body called Quality Advisory Committee (QAC) was also constituted for guiding
IQAC on the right path. This body was reconstituted in 2013. IQAC, along with a duly constituted steering committee,
played an important role in the reaccreditation process of Acharya Nagarjuna University in the year 2010 when it
was awarded B Grade. Steps have been initiated for the reaccreditation of the university due in 2015. A committee
comprising Deans of faculties and others had been constituted to take care of the seven criteria in the preparation
of the Self-Study Report.

STUDENT SUPPORT ACTIVITIES
I. UGC-NET Coaching Programme
The UGC has been very particular in designing and running programmes and schemes for contributing
towards social equality and social-economic mobility for the disadvantaged sections of the society. One such
scheme is designed for the student community belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and
Minorities for appearing at UGC NET examination. UGC NET coaching project was sanctioned to Acharya Nagarjuna
University during the X Plan and the first spell of coaching started in May 2005. Under this programme, coaching
is being given to the students in identified subjects only, with the faculty of the University and other experts from
reputed coaching institutions. Besides this, subject material is provided free of cost to the students.
UGC-NET Coaching programme during 2014 was conducted in two spells. The Eighteenth spell of coach-
ing took place during 10th May to 27th June, 2014. 175 students attended coaching programme. Free lectures
were given by reputed resource persons in the disciplines of Telugu, English, Hindi, History, Education, Political
Science, Public Administration, Economics, Sociology, Physical Education, Commerce & Management, Com-
puter Science, Environmental Science, Journalism and Mass Communication and General Studies. Photocopied
study material was distributed to all the students in all the disciplines free of cost. The coaching programme has
resulted in 22 students getting qualified in NET examination that took place in this spell. The Nineteenth spell is
about to be conducted during 10th November to 26th December, 2014. The results of this coaching will be declared
in the month of May, 2015. Prof. K. John Paul, Department of Geology is the Co-ordinator for UGC-NET Coaching
for SC/ST/BC and Minorities
II. UGC Sponsored Coaching for Entry into Services for SC/ST/OBC/ and Minority Students
Coaching scheme for entry into services is to be organized with an objective to:
(1) Prepare students to gain useful employment in Group ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ in Central services, State services and
equivalent positions in private sector.
(2) To orient students for particular examinations conducted for selection to services such as IAS, State Public
Services, Bank recruitment etc.
(3) To focus on the specific requirements of a particular competitive examination. The University may develop
Employment Information Cell for providing information about various competitive examinations in the area of
their operation.

Benefited Students Year Wise
The study material is also distributed to the eligible students at the end of coaching classes every year.

III. UGC Remedial Coaching Scheme
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced remedial coaching since 1994 for the benefit of
the students belonging to the SC, ST and BC/ Minority sections for improving their academic skills and linguistic
proficiency in various subjects and raising their level of comprehension in such subjects where quantitative, tech-
nical and laboratory work are involved and reduce their failure and dropout rate. The scheme was implemented in
the university from the academic year 2000-2001. The programme in designed such a way that the SC/ST/BC and
Minority students are given extra coaching in the papers that they feel difficult to cope with.
In XII Five Year Plan, the UGC decided to make special location for promoting higher education for SC,ST,BC
and Minorities. The commission has been providing separate assistance to the University for Remedial coaching
at the PG level. Keeping in view the financial constraints, 20 departments at the postgraduate level having strength
of 980 students in the Colleges of Arts, Commerce & Law, Sciences and Physical Education including Pharmacy
College were identified for this programme during 2012-13. Under this programme 2013-14 academic year 1120
students were covered including ANU PG Centre. Ongole. The Heads of the Departments identified for this programme
were supplied with necessary operational guidelines and were requested to implement this programme in their
respective departments. The heads of these courses have conducted this programme quite satisfactorily and all of
them have expressed the usefulness and need of such programmes for the benefit of SC/ST/BC & Minority
students.
