How to Maximize your Experience at the U.S.

College Fair

At the U.S. college fair, you may become overwhelmed with the number of universities present. Think about what you need to ask the
university representatives in advance. Here are a few questions that may help:
*General questions can most likely be answered in the college’s print or online materials*

• Is the ACT/SAT/GRE/TOEFL required? What are the average scores?

• When must I choose a major? Does the choice of major on the application impact admission?
• What courses should I take to prepare me best for your university?
• What are the most popular majors? Do you have those in which I am interested?
• What’s the size of the largest class on campus? The smallest?
• What types of internships are available?
• Are there study abroad opportunities?
• How do faculty members interact with students? Do they have a mentoring approach to students?
• Are there research opportunities?
• What is the rate of your job placement and acceptance into graduate school programs?
• What type of scholarships and/or financial aid is available?
• How many students received financial aid and how much on average do they receive?
• What types of extra-curricular activities are there on campus?
• Is there transportation on and off campus? Is it easy to get to town and/or home?
• What is the climate during the school year?

Tips for Attending the U.S. College Fair!
The EducationUSA University Fair will provide you with opportunities to talk with representatives from U.S. colleges and universities that are
seeking students just like you. For many of you who have not visited colleges in the U.S., this is your chance to learn first-hand about these schools,
and a chance for the representatives to meet and learn a bit about you!

• Formulate questions that will give you information that is useful in your search: Ask the college reps for information that is not already
available on their institution’s website or on the Fair brochure.
• Don’t be afraid. Approach representatives and ask questions: The representatives who are at the fair are skilled in helping students get
started.
• Listen to what others are asking: Others may have the same questions as you, so listen carefully.
• Ask for help if you need it: Identify Fair organizers and assistants.
• Provide information about yourself: It is important that you give information about yourself to the representatives so that they can follow up
and send to you information about areas of the college that might interest you.
• There is no cost to you
• Your behavior leaves an impression--use this to your benefit: Introduce yourself and never just pick up brochures and pamphlets and then
walk away without speaking to the representative.
• Do not go from table to table in a group or follow friends around: The college search is very personal, and your talks with the college
representatives should be as well.
• Be patient and wait for your turn: University fairs can be crowded events. Wait for your turn while entering the fair and while at university
tables.
• Keep an open mind: The education fair gives you an opportunity to learn something new about a school you might have never otherwise
considered.
• After the Fair: After the fair, talk with your parents about what you learned; perhaps even make some notes in a journal while your thoughts
are fresh. If you were especially impressed with a college, you may want to follow up with the representative. You may contact that person via
email.
