The Game of
Advantage
High School Expectations
High School Expectations: Take control of your own learning.
Are you an effective learner?
The art of following through.
Completing a task from start to finish.
Sometimes done is better than perfect.
Extracurricular activities are a great way to practice following through.
Time management
You will have a lot more on your plate.
What are your responsibilities as a student, family member, friend, or employee?
Focus on prioritizing your time.
Maximize the down time that you have.
Successful Studying
1. Don't attempt to cram all your studying into one session.
2. Schedule specific times throughout the week when you are going to study.
3. Study at the same time each day to create a consistent routine.
4. Each study session should have a specific goal.
5. Start with the most difficult subject first.
6. Block out distractions while youre studying.
7. Create a study group to learn from peers.
8. Teach others what you have learned.
9. Take a ten minute break to relax.
10. Review your notes and class materials over the weekend.
Improve Your Notetaking
1. Go to class prepared.
Use highlighters, markers, or different pen colors to make your notes visually appealing.
Notebook or binder is best so that your paper is not all over your back pack.
Read assigned material and review notes before class.
2. Improve your listening skills.
Go to class with a positive mindset.
Concentrate on concentrating.
Adapt to whatever direction the lecture takes.
Listen for main ideas and terminology.
3. Develop a note-taking method that works for you.
Start each new lecture on a new page, and date notes.
Add titles and subtitles.
Leave blank spaces. This allows you to add comments or note questions later.
Develop a system of abbreviations and symbols you can use wherever possible.
Note all unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts you dont understand.
4. Review and edit your notes.
Compare notes in your study group.
Growth Mindset
Growth mindset is a belief that a
persons abilities and intelligence can
be developed through practice, hard
work, dedication, and motivation.
AKA YOU HAVE THE FORCE IS WITHIN
YOU!
A fixed mindset is that intelligence and
talent alone lead to success.
Causes us to feel hopeless.
You can coach yourself to have a
growth mindset.
Train your thoughts.
When bad things happen dont give up!
Communication Skills
Self-Advocacy: the action of representing oneself or one's views
or interests.
Know yourself, know what you need, and know how to get it.
Your voice matters.
Find a trusted adult to help.
I Statements
Example
Example 1: He gives me too much work. The way he teaches doesnt make
sense. I cant learn from him.
Example 2: I feel frustrated when I am working on my homework because I feel
like my notes arent helping me. I need to improve my note-taking. Could I come
during PH so that we could review my notes together?
