Application:
READ AND RESPOND. Find out how much you have learned about the
learners with difficulty in communicating by answering these following questions.

1. Define speech and language.

the most powerful and dexterous form of communication for humans. Speech is multi
modal and is produced with the mouth, the tongue, the vocal tract, the hands and the entire
body and perceived not only with our ears but also with our eyes.

2. Differentiate expressive from receptive language.

Expressive language is the use of words, sentences, gestures, and writing to create
a message or convey a meaning. It is frequently associated with identifying objects,
describing events and how to do actions, create sentences and use correct grammar,
while receptive language is the ability to understand words and language. Much of
this type of language is inferring communication from environment and experiences.

3. Describe one communication disorder.

Intellectual disability-involves problems with general mental abilities that affect
functioning in two areas; intellectual functioning (such as learning, problem solving,
judgement) and adaptive functioning (activities of daily life such as communication
and independent living.)

5. How is language different from speech?

Speech refers to the actual sound of spoken language. Its the oral form of
communicating. Speech is talking, while language refers to a whole system of words
and symbols, written, spoken or expressed with gestures and body language that is
used to communicate meaning.
RETROSPECTION.

1. Think of people you know who have difficulty in communication. Try to explain
their communication problems by referring to the parts of the lesson.
I have my cousin having the difficulties in his emotional and psychological
disorders. There are some instances that earlier you between him is having a good
conversation even if a shallow subject of topic but until he will be having bipolar
disorder, he will change his behaviors often so you need to adjust yourself and
understand the situation.

2. Recall the times you abused your voice. What were the results? What lesson did
you learn from that experience?
I remember I have my reporting that day but some incidents happen the ceiling of
the classroom almost fell so the class move to the covered court and I don’t need to
delay my report because its already been delayed for almost two weeks. During
reporting we cannot avoid some unrelated noises because its an open space, so I
exerted to much effort and increases my voice to deliver my report and can be heard
by whole class and turn out as excellent report. But the day after the report I cannot
used my voice properly because my throat hurt too much that even swallowing
small amount of food can cause a hurtful effect, so after that happens I never used
too much of my voice unless needed to not experience again those hurtful
experience.
