Tagoloan River Basin

The Tagoloan River Basin is located in Northern Mindanao. It is considered as the thirteenth
largest river basin in the Philippines. It covers an estimated basin area of 1,704 square kilometers.

The basin consists of the following rivers: Malitbog, Siloo, Titian, Mangima, Alulum, Amusig and
Dila River. It traverses the Tagoloan River, flowing northwest, and drains into the Macajalar Bay. It
encompasses the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.

Tagoloan Flood Control

The objective of the Project is to mitigate flood damage in the selected core areas in Cagayan
river basin, Tagoloan river basin and Imus river basin in the Philippines by implementing structural and
non-structural measures against flood, and thereby contributing to the sustainable and stable economic
development and climate change adaptation in the target areas.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now halfway

complete with the construction of 642-meter flood control dike in
Tagoloan River in the town of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

The Tagoloan River Sub-Project – Stage 1, which is being implemented

by the Unified Project Management Office-Flood Control Management
Cluster (UPMO-FCMC), will soon be functional to help strengthen the
capability in disaster risk management of areas within and near the
said river.

According to UPMO-FCMC Project Director Patrick Gatan, the P133-

million project involving the construction of river dikes and excavation
of river channel together with drainage channel improvement is being
fast tracked to meet the target completion date.

“We are doing our best to complete this dike by the second quarter of
2018 to minimize flooding incidents in Tagoloan that pose great threat
to life, livelihood and properties of the townspeople,” said Gatan.
Meanwhile, the Stage 2 of the flood control project which covers the
downstream section of Tagoloan River is now 38.5% finished and
scheduled to be completed by 2019.

The Tagoloan River is among the river basins included in the Japan
International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Flood Risk Management
Project (FRIMP).

Butuan City – Ground work at the P667-million flood control project in Tagoloan River, in the
town of Tagoloan, in Misamis Oriental is now halfway completed, public works officials said.

The Tagoloan River is among the river basins included in the Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA) Flood Risk Management Project (FRIMP).

“Our men in the field with our project engineers are doing their best to complete this flood
control dike in Tagoloan River by the second quarter of 2018 to address flooding incidents in
Tagoloan that pose great threat to life, livelihood and properties of the townspeople,” said
Unified Project Management Office-Flood Control Management Cluster (UPMO-FCMC) Project
Director Patrick B. Gatan.

The round-the-clock ground works of this 642-meter flood control dike is funded by the Official
Development Assistance from the government of Japan, through the Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project which involves the construction of river dikes and excavation of river channel
together with drainage channel improvement is being fast tracked to meet the target
completion date.

The devastation caused by Typhoon “Seniang” in December, 2014 paved the way for the
implementation of the project.

The flood control project is divided into two stages – Upstream Section (Stage 1), where scope
of work is the constructions of flood protection dike (642 meters) and drainage sluiceway, and
Downstream Section (Stage 2) with construction of dike embankment with partition walls (1,927
meters), drainage improvement (1,602 meters) and drainage sluiceway on 2 locations as scope
of work.

The flood control project in Tagoloan is being closely supervised by DPWH UPMO-FCMC Project
Manager lll Engr. Alejandro Andy Sosa and Project Engineer III Roy Quilaton, in an effort to
strictly implement the program of works with prescribed good quality materials while hitting its
target timeline of completion.

Cagayan de Oro River Basin

The Cagayan de Oro (CDO) River Basin is located in the northern coast of Mindanao. The CDO River Basin
is the sixteenth largest river basin in the Philippines with an estimated basin area of 1,521 square
kilometres.

It includes Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental and the municipalities of Talakag, Baungon and
Libona in Bukidnon. It has Cagayan de Oro River as its main channel with major tributaries including
Kalawaig River, Tagite River, Bubunaoan River, and Tumalaong River and discharges the load to Macajalar

Cagayan de Oro River Basin Water Quality Assessment

Activity Design
The Cagayan de Oro River Basin (CDORB) water quality monitoring of the majortributaries in the
critical areas of the river basin was conducted from April 28 to May 1, 2014.The purpose of the
assessment is to accumulate the baseline data necessary to assessboth the previous and current
state of water quality of CDORB major tributaries and to considerlonger term trends to establish
ambient water quality objectives necessary in managing the riverbasin. The implementation of water
quality objectives into planning initiatives can help protectedwatershed values; mitigate impacts of
upland-use activities on source area watersheds, andprotect water in the context of both acute and
chronic impacts to human and aquatic ecosystemhealth. Among others, water quality monitoring
assessment of CDORB resultsare used as basisfor policy or management decisions concerning a
water body and its uses
