Background: On September 19, 2019, the Kent County Animal Shelter received a report that horses were
being neglected at a property in Rockford, MI.
Statement:
The following statement is from Kent County Health Administrator Adam London:
“We take every animal complaint very seriously and, as such, our officer immediately went to the
property when we received a report of malnourished horses on Sept. 19, 2019 to look into the allegations.
After the officer had an opportunity to thoroughly review the property and animals, the officer
determined there was adequate shelter, water and hay at the location. Our officer was back on the
property today to review the conditions and health of the animals. Our standard policy, under the Kent
County Animal Control Regulations, is to “examine, capture, or rescue any animal or to conduct
inspections of all properties, public or private” once a report has been filed with our office. Our
investigation on this particular report is ongoing but residents should be assured our animal control officer
is aware of this situation and ensuring the welfare of the animals.
As always, we encourage anyone with knowledge of an abused, neglected, or tortured animal to report it
to the Kent County Animal Shelter at 616-632-7304.”
