TITLE : Painting Specification for Flat Bottom Tanks
Sheet no. : 2 of 5
Rev. no. : 0

1.0 Scope :

This specification covers the protective coatings for external surfaces of the outer vessel
and structural platforms and stairways, which unless protected may corrode when exposed
to environment. Galvanized components need not be painted.

2.0 References :

a. Preparation of steel substrate before application of paint: ISO 8501-1.

b. Manufacturer’s literature for application of paint.

3.0 Surface treatment :

3.1 Before any surface is painted it shall be cleaned to remove loose dirt, oil, grease, weld
spatters, potentially loose rust, mill scales and other foreign materials.

3.2 Blast cleaning :

Blast cleaning shall be carried out using dry sand / grit and using oil free dry air to the
desired pressure. Prior to sand blasting any heavy layers of rust shall be removed by
clipping. Visible oil, grease and dirt shall also be removed. When sand blasting the opening
in the outer tank shall be properly covered. The sand / grit blasting shall be carried out only
when the surfaces are dry. Surfaces which are sand blasted have to be cleaned carefully
from remaining dust using compressed air. The blast cleaned surface shall be visually
assessed by comparing with the photographs of SA 2½ given in ISO 8501-1. When viewed
without magnification, the surface shall be free from visible oil grease, dirt and from mill
scale, rust paint coatings and foreign matter. Any remaining traces of contamination show
only as light stains in the form of spot or stripes.

3.3 Painting of weld seams shall not be executed until testing of the outer tank is completed.
Each coat of paint shall be tinted to differentiate it from previous coat.

3.4 Primer application shall be stopped 50 mm from all edges that are to be welded after primer
coat.

3.5 Outer shells after rolling, leaving 50 mm on either side of weld seams shall be blast cleaned
and given primer paint. After welding is completed, this portion shall be mechanically
cleaned and primer painted.

4.0 Painting application :

4.1 Immediately after cleaning, the first priming coat shall be applied with in four hours.

For any unforeseen reason , if this is not possible, then corresponding surfaces, if
necessary will have to be derusted again the next day before applying the priming coat.
Weld joint adjacent area by 50 mm on both sides shall be protected while applying primer
coat.

4.2 All paint bins shall be opened just prior to utilization and have to be carefully closed
immediately after withdrawal of materials.

4.3 Paints shall be consumed in first out basis.

4.4 Paints shall be stirred-up thoroughly prior to the application.

Stirring may be necessary, intermediately to prevent setting of pigments.

4.5 If adding thinner is admitted care has to be taken that the thinner will be stirred thoroughly.
This also applies to the specified hardness in case of two component paints.

4.6 After mixing viscosity of paint shall be checked using ford cup.

4.7 Application of coating media is made by brushing rolling or spraying or their combination.

Painting shall be uniformly. At no place coating film shall be less than specified thickness.

4.8 The drying time interval between two coasts shall be as recommended by the paint
manufacturer. The subsequent coat shall not be applied before the previous one is
sufficiently hardened. The paint coat shall not be dried by force and under conditions that
will enhance chances of wrinkling, shrinking and blistering.

4.9 Painting shall be carried by qualified personnel.

4.10 Before commencement of painting and at least four thereafter the dew point shall be
determined.

Painting shall not be permitted when the metal surface temperature is less than 30 above
the dew point.

5.0 Application of paint:

a. Applying paint by brush:

Round or oval brushes are most suitable for uneven surfaces, hard to reach
corners, bolts, rivet etc. For larger surfaces, however flat brushes are preferred but
they shall not exceed a width of 13 cm. Coating media shall be applied uniform in
thickness. Brush streaks shall be avoided sags and runs have to be distributed or
removed and new paint to be applied uniformly.

Paint rollers are most suitable for large surfaces.

b. Applying paint by Spraying:

The equipment shall be such as to have corrected spraying of the paint and shall be
provided with suitable pressure control. For removing oil and water of condensation
from the spraying air corresponding separators have to be used. These separators
are to be cleaned regularly. During spraying, paint has to be maintained thoroughly
mixed in the spray gun. The spraying pressure of the paint in the gun and in the
storage bin to be adjusted in such a way that the best spraying effect is attained.
