E-sports as an equal to sports

As video games as a medium become more available to play for Filipinos and especially
students, Multiplayer games like Mobile Legends, and DotA 2 become very widespread that
players passionate enough about playing pick up E-sports as a way to compete against others
and bag prize pools, much like physical sports such as basketball.

E-sports is a form of competition and entertainment using video games where professional
players can use their skills, teamwork together, and coming up with strategies to defeat the
opposing teams. While society see’s E-sports as inferior to physical sports, E-sports could still
potentially bag big prize pools in tournaments, whether the opponents got the best of you in the
eliminations or clinching victorious in the finals.

With that said, we can take the Filipino Team “TNC” for example, who won PHP40 Million from
their first championship in the 2017 World Electronics Sports Games (WESG) DotA 2
tournament in China before winning another PHP26 Million on the same tournament this year of
2019.

And It isn’t just computer games like DotA 2 where our fellow Filipinos take passion, there’s also
mobile games like Mobile Legends, that held it’s own Southeast Asia Cup on 2018 last year
where another Filipino Team named “Bren Esports” bagged a whopping amount of PHP4,1
Million.

While E-sports is now becoming accepted as a sport and it’s professional players being
identified as athletes within society. There are still people that mock or discourage the concept
of E-sports, even parent’s looking down on their children who pursue it. All because they see E-
sports as nothing more than a video game without even knowing the benefits and the good side
of it, often mistaking the passionate that wants to take E-sports as a profession for people that
only play it to waste their time than trying to benefit from it as well.

Times are changing, and someday E-sports will be equal to physical sports within the next
decade because of rapid progression. It is nothing more than a cyber counterpart to physical
sports where both of Its players can still compete and bag massive prize pools because over
time more and more Filipinos will discover E-sports as a way to find success without worrying of
having a frail physique.
