WELCOME

The Order of the White Lion and Isis Tuition are run by teachers who have completed an
extensive study of spiritual awareness and in particular the Tree of Life, working very much
on a practical level. Our aim is to help raise awareness, not only of the teachings and how
to use the Tree of Life, but also to help others find a way of living their lives more fully.

Introduction to Binah

Binah is the Womb of Creation and Mother of Form.

She is the great sea from which all life emerges, and all must return.

Binah aligns with the Law of Polarity and as such the symbolism attached is twofold:

Binah is Aima, the bright, fertile mother of creation

and

Ama, the dark, sterile mother of the underworld

Aima is the Mother of Faith

Ama is the Mother of Disbelief

The challenge of Binah is a spiritual one.

It is to find the roots of faith and personal motivation.

When we experience a loss, it is easy to question or lose our faith.

Binah is the Mother of all Creation.

The Mother who is always there watching over her children.

5

Binah Awareness
Faith

Binah represents the Mother of Form, and it is within her Womb of Life that the Word of
God takes form.

In Binah we explore the roots of our Faith:

✦ Faith that there is a force much greater and higher than us, mere personalities, on
the earth plane
✦ Faith in the bigger picture - the spiritual purpose of Humanity
✦ Faith that there must be a Creator

For, without proof, how do we know that such a Creator exists?

A definition of faith can be described as having: Complete trust or belief in someone or something based on
spiritual understanding rather than proof or physical evidence.

Without physical evidence we have only our faith.

Without faith we are left with the evolutionary theory that life began as a result of a chain of
inanimate chemical reactions.

Is this a logical explanation? Did life begin spontaneously through random chemical
reactions?
Did chance create life on earth?

Did chance create the most complex and mysterious thing known to man in the universe -
the human brain?

If we are prepared to look there is evidence of a Creator all around us in the orderly
workings of the universe, in nature, and in the intricate way our DNA programmes the 100
trillion cells that make up our human body.

Without faith nothing can take form or have substance.

6

The Supernal Triad

The Tree of Life can be divided into 3 triangles:

✦ Personality

✦ Soul

✦ Spirit

So far, in this series of workbooks, we have studied the Personality sephiroth: Yesod, Hod
and Netzach, and the Soul sephiroth: Tiphareth, Geburah and Chesed.

Malkuth sits alone. Malkuth represents the planet Earth, the Physical Plane and physical body.

In Binah we begin to explore the Spiritual triangle, also known as the Supernal Triad.

Binah, Chokmah and Kether make up the supernal triangle that aligns with the spiritual
realms. This area represents our spiritual desire, direction and motive. The virtues
attached to these sephiroth are:

✦ Silence - Binah

✦ Devotion - Chokmah

✦ Attainment / Completion of the Great Work - Kether

Binah is sephirah number 3 and on the *Briah level it is associated with the colour black.

*The colours most regularly shown on the Tree of Life are the ones that align with Briah - the World of
Creation. The sephiroth also correspond with other colours associated with the Four Worlds.

As well as numbers, colours and many other correspondences, the sephiroth also have a
a key meaning attached to each of them.

Binah is known as Understanding. Binah helps us to attain Spiritual Understanding.

Chesed, the sephirah of Order and Timing, encourages us to explore and discover more
about the bigger picture. It is in the Temple of Chesed that we attempt to connect with the
Masters and Teachers of Humanity who can teach us how to walk in perfect time with the
orderly flow of the universe.

Now in Binah we aim to concentrate our efforts to deepen our understanding of spiritual
values, and explore how we can strengthen our own spiritual connections and bring the
universal spiritual values down through the planes and into manifestation.

Thus, making Earth a dwelling place fit for the divine force of God.

One way we can increase our understanding is to take a deeper look at the Tree of Life
and the Four Worlds.
7

Ladder of the Four Worlds

The ancient teachings of the Qabalah are mapped out on the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life
is a tool we can use to help us in our everyday life. In spite of how it may appear, the Tree
of Life is not a rigid structure.

Within the Tree of Life there are many different levels, and different Worlds.

If we explore these worlds in more depth we can see how this dynamic arrangement
guides and shows us the *different pathways to Heaven.

*Note: we need to always remember that there is no

Right, wrong or one way only route to God

Just the path that is Right for You

The four worlds, also refered to as the Four Heavens or Four Universes, are:

✦ Atziluth - Deity Force and Archetypal World (Spirit)

✦ Briah - Creative World (Soul)

✦ Yetzirah - World of Formation

(Personality)

✦ Assiah - World of Manifestation

and Physical / Material World
(Physical Body)

More information on the 4 Worlds can also be

found in the Malkuth and Netzach Workbooks.

By looking at a very basic diagram of the

Tree of Life we can see a simplistic
example of how the Tree is divided and
where the four worlds are situated.

This is just one way we can view the four worlds.

Please note:

Atziluth is the highest of the four worlds. The three highest sephiroth: Kether, Chokmah and Binah - also
known as the trinity - are sometimes shown to be included in this world of pure spirit. Another viewpoint is
that Atziluth encompasses the two sephiroth that have no vices attached i.e. Kether and Chokmah.

There are many ways of approaching the Tree of Life so it is important to remember that there are
no ‘rights or wrongs’ - just different perspectives. Likewise, there is also different terminology and
alternative ways to pronounce and spell Qabalah, Kabbalah and Cabala.
8

The four worlds can be viewed individually but they are not separate entities. Each world
connects, interacts and flows one into another.

As the worlds ascend from Assiah

to Atziluth, each subsequent Tree
operates on the same Laws of the
Universe - as outlined in the
Chesed workbook - only on a
higher level, at a higher vibration,
bringing us into closer contact with
the Divine.

The complete structure of the

ascending worlds, when joined
together, can be visually likened to
a ladder.

A ladder that leads to God and a

deeper understanding of the
purpose of Creation.

It illustrates the connection between God and man.

A ladder or stairway to heaven was first mentioned in the bible in Genesis 28: 10 -12.

Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, had a dream.

In this dream Jacob saw a ladder (or flight of stairs) that stood on the earth and reached
far into the heavens with angels ascending and descending on it. At the top of the
stairway God revealed himself to Jacob and reaffirmed the covenant that was made with
Jacob’s grandfather - Abraham (formerly Abram).

Like the prophet Enoch who lived before him - and who was the son of Cain and descendant of
Adam - Abraham was a man who demonstrated exceptional faith in God and who received
communications in the form of visions and dreams. It is likely these communications were passed
on to Jacob, from grandfather to grandson.

God’s covenant with Abraham was to promise him:

A father of a crowd of nations I will make you

In the dream God promised Jacob that through his (Jacob’s) seed and the offspring of his
seed, all the descendants would be blessed.

Qabalists believe that within the symbolism of the ladder and the covenant made with
Abraham, God provided a way to link Himself to man and help those who wished to reach
heaven.

Jesus Christ was born from the line of Abraham and Jacob. According to the bible Jesus
was an absolute example of the ladder in action.
9

Qabalistically, the face of God that Tiphareth represents is that of the Redeemer and
willing sacrifice. It is believed that Jesus took on the role of willing sacrifice, in that he
willingly surrendered the Will of the Personality to the Will of the Soul.

On the Tree of Life Tiphareth is an important connecting point.

More information on the sephirah Tiphareth can be found in the Tiphareth workbook.

If we look on page 10 and observe how the ascending ladder from earth to heaven is
displayed we can see that:

✦ The Kether of Assiah aligns with the Tiphareth of Yetzirah

and

✦ The Kether of Yetzirah aligns with the Tiphareth of Briah

and

✦ The Kether of Briah aligns with the Tiphareth of Atziluth

Likewise, looking at the descending ladder from

heaven to earth we can see that:

✦ The Malkuth of Atziluth corresponds with

the Tiphareth of Briah

✦ The Malkuth of Briah corresponds with the

Tiphareth of Yetzirah

✦ The Malkuth of Yetzirah aligns with the

Tiphareth of Assiah, and our heart on the
*physical body

*If we stood with our backs to the Assiah Tree, Tiphareth aligns with our heart.

The Tree of Life is also known as the Ladder of Lights.

The 4 Worlds provide a format to enable the Spiritual energy to manifest on Earth.

The descent of the spiritual energy down the Tree and into Malkuth gives us the
opportunity to put God’s plans into action and fulfil the spiritual purpose.

Malkuth is Action on the Physical Plane.

In Chokmah we learn how to bring the spiritual energy down through the planes in a
controlled manner.
10

The ascending and descending ladder connecting Heaven and Earth

11

Womb of Creation
At the top of the middle pillar of Equilibrium on the Tree of Life
is the pure white sephirah of Kether.

Kether represents the spark of life and spiritual desire.

Chokmah (grey), at the top of the white pillar of Force is the

Spiritual Aim and Cosmic Direction of the spark of life.

Chokmah is the Father of Creation and sephirah of Wisdom.

Binah (black), at the top of the black pillar of Form, is the

Mother of Creation and sephirah of Understanding.

The dynamic force of Chokmah has no form.

For the spiritual desire from Kether to manifest, it needs to take

on a form.

Binah is the archetypal womb, receptive and waiting to be filled

by the stimulating energy from Chokmah.

On her own Binah is an empty vessel.

As Mother of Form Binah creates the condition, in her

Womb of Creation, so that the spiritual energy can take
shape.

It is in Binah that the Word of God takes form.

Without form, the energy cannot manifest.

On the Briah level, her sphere is the colour black.

Black is the perfect absorber of all frequencies of light

and reflects none back. All the colours from the pure
white light of Kether are hidden behind Binah’s dark veil
waiting for the right time, and level of understanding,
before being revealed.
12

Spiritual Mother
Binah is the bright fertile Mother of Creation. Binah is also the dark sterile mother who
grieves for the loss of her children - those who cannot make the transition out of the
darkness of disbelief, and into the light.

Our body, personality, soul and spirit make up the whole of us.

We cannot detach our personality from our body, or our soul from our spirit. Our job is to
find a way of connecting on all levels. This way everything will be working together and in
harmony.

Climbing the Tree helps

us to see more clearly as
we detach from the
material plane. We gain a
higher perspective as our
view from above, looking
down, enables us to see
more of the bigger picture
and the purpose of our
incarnation on Earth.

The face of God that

Binah represents is that of
the parent - the Mother
role. Binah is the Spiritual
Mother who nurtures and
watches over her children.

Children tend to thrive once they understand what their boundaries are.

Children that eat nourishing food, and enjoy a healthy balance of rest and stimulation are
more likely to function better than those who gorge on sweets, go without sleep, and sit on
the sofa watching TV all day.

Children with no structure in their lives can easily lose their way. This also applies to
adults. However, in Qabalistic terms we are all children, whatever our age.

We are the child of the soul as the soul is the child of the spirit, and the spirit is the
child of the Creator.

Therefore we need to remember the role of the Spiritual Mother.

The Universal Mother that is always there - watching over us, ensuring we stay on track.

And remember also, that sometimes boundaries are necessary to ensure we don’t get
distracted and lost.
13

Restriction and Limitation

In Chesed we are encouraged to explore the bigger picture.

In Binah we aspire to Understand it.

This includes understanding why restrictions and limitations are sometimes necessary in
our everyday lives.

On the Tree of Life, Saturn is the planet associated with Binah. Saturn rules the backbone
so we instantly know that we are dealing with an immensely powerful and solid force - not
something that is flimsy or easily distracted.

Chaos has no place in Binah. Binah represents structure. Without Binah there would be
no boundaries. In Binah we strive to understand the restrictions and limitations in our life.
True understanding comes through knowing the difference between what we must
endeavour to overcome, and what it is that needs to be eliminated to allow for growth.

Sometimes what the personality wants is not part of the bigger picture and limitations and
restrictions may be imposed to prevent an individual from creating further negative karma
that will need to be cleared.

Tiphareth is our creative power

Geburah is our reality check

Chesed is our vision of the future

Binah is discipline and limitation

14

We need to be able to run with our creative power and explore the bigger picture but we
must also have the determination to put our creative potential to good use, and accomplish
our goals for the future. Geburah will help us to recognise the traits in our personality that
hold us back, but it is for us to make the effort to understand our limitations and summon
the Will Power and self discipline to do something about it.

Saturn can be a hard task master. Saturn in our birth chart often represents a figure of
authority - a professional, who wants things done thoroughly and properly, and at the same
time adhere to rules and regulations. The Laws of the Universe.

There is no form beyond Binah. There are no vices in either Chokmah or Kether so
everything beyond the limits of Binah has to be pure, and in line with the spiritual Will and
desire.

The key meaning behind Binah is Understanding.

How do you react to the challenges in your life?

*Do you give up easily or do you stick with things?

*Do you abandon ideas as soon as you hit a problem?

*If this is the case it may be that until you persevere and see something through you will
continually find yourself in this situation.

Do you bide your time and try to overcome difficulties, and keep working towards your
goal?

Do you get frustrated if you are thwarted?

Are you impatient for results?

Obstacles that occur in our life may be in place to prevent us from taking a wrong turning,
or they may simply be hold-ups that are linked to correct timing.

Do you understand why these challenges occur? The emphasis is not meant to be on
restrictions in our life but on knowing how we can work with them or overcome them. How
we can turn a negative into a positive, and use the tools we have available to help us.

This is why it is important to Know Thyself, and understand our attitude towards
discipline, limitation and restriction. What do those words mean to you?

Note: Capricorn is the sign of the zodiac that is ruled by Saturn. The Tarot card that is
associated with Capricorn is The Devil. It is important we understand that the devil is of
our own making. The image depicted within this card is laughing. It is laughing at how we
trap ourselves in self imposed bondage. The Capricorn energy does not like to take risks,
it represents the Traditionalist who prefers to do things in familiar, tried and tested ways.
However, there may be other methods - new approaches. This card in a tarot reading can
indicate that perhaps our thinking is restricted. Maybe we need to be more creative in our
thinking when dealing with life’s challenges. Think outside of the box.
15

Spiritual Intention

Is the life we have created for ourselves on Earth - our Kingdom - a true representation of
the spiritual intention? Is it in line with God’s plan for humanity?

The Spiritual Intention is for us to create our ideal world and live in perfect balance and
harmony.

Kether is the Source of all Creation - the spark of life and Spiritual Desire

Chokmah is the Force of Creative Power - the Spiritual Aim / Direction

Binah is the Spiritual Intention / Motive

The spark of life from Kether, travels down the Tree to Chokmah, and becomes the
stimulating force of creative power.

When the dynamic force from Chokmah is absorbed within the restricting form of Binah,
the energy separates, and the pure white light from Kether is split.

Chokmah is like a speeding car while Binah is the hand brake.

Thus, it is from Binah the Mother of Form, and the subsequent splitting of the energy, that
all the *colour rays and different religions and faiths took shape.

*Note: Together the seven colours of the rainbow make white light.

Throughout history major prophets have passed on messages and teachings they claimed
were channelled from a spiritual source.

Together, the doctrines of the various faiths teach us the value of harmony. They serve to
highlight different aspects within ourselves that need more understanding.

More information on the Prophets of the Ages can be found in the Tiphareth workbook.

Understanding (Binah) how to fulfil the Spiritual Intention and live in perfect balance and
harmony will lead us to Wisdom (Chokmah). Wisdom can help us to attain Completion of
the Great Work, and reunion with the Source (Kether).
16

Motivation
The challenge of Binah is spiritual. It is to find the roots of faith and personal motivation.

What Motivates You?

There are no Right or Wrong answers. However it is important we know for ourselves
where our faith comes from, and what motivates us to continue on our journey as we
search for understanding and enlightenment.

Free Will means we can choose our level of motivation.

Note: As we journey deeper into the Tree of Life we begin to walk the paths. Each path is situated between
two sephiroth. The path has its own specific intention and links two sephiroth together in one complete
experience. Like the temples, this experience will often be reflected in everyday life.

The Lovers path on the Tree of Life runs between Tiphareth and Binah.

The power associated with The Lovers is Freedom of Choice. Other keywords include:
Unity and Separateness.

A brief interpretation of this path could be:

We have the freedom to choose to be disciplined and self motivated to Understand more
about God’s plan, and live our lives in Unity and Devotion to the Great work.

However, as Binah aligns with the Universal Law of Polarity the opposite could equally
apply:

We can choose, through lack of Belief and false pride, not to be motivated at all.

It is all down to attitude, and how we choose to think.

Another path on the Tree of Life that runs from Kether to Binah is The Magus of Power.
The power associated with this path is Complete Control of Life and Destiny.

Astrologically, The Magus is linked to Mercury - the Messenger of the Gods, while The
Lovers is linked to Gemini.

Gemini is depicted by the twins - another aspect of polarity - and ruled by the planet
Mercury. Mercury on the Tree of Life aligns with Hod.

The keyword for Hod is Splendour. This is the Splendour of the Workings of the Human
Mind. In Hod we learn about the Power of Thought and explore our Attitude.

However, when we are studying The Magus on the Tree of Life, although it is associated
with the planet Mercury, in this context - it is not Hod.

Hod is situated lower down the Tree of Life in the region of the Personality. Hod is where
we study Personality Attitudes. At the Magus of Power level, we are looking at
spiritual values and not personality ones.
17

If we study the ladder of the 4 Worlds (see page 18) and focus on the sephiroth Binah and
Hod we can see how:

✦ The Hod of Atziluth (Spirit) influences the Binah of Briah (Soul)

✦ The Hod of Briah (Soul) influences the Binah of Yetzirah (Personality)

✦ The Hod of Yetzirah (Personality) influences the Binah of Assiah (Physical Body).

This interaction between Binah ☻ and Hod ☻ works its way down the planes from the
spiritual level down to the physical body.

When we look at the connection between the Hod of Yetzirah and the Binah of Assiah we
can understand this to mean:

The right side of the Physical Body’s Brain (Assiah ☻)

Is influenced by

The Attitude of the Personality (Yetzirah ☻)

So, our personality attitude affects how the right side of our brain works.

The right side of our brain controls the left side of our body, and vice versa.

Although we are a combination of characteristics from both sides of the brain. The left
side concentrates on logic, detail, language, maths and science. Whereas the right
governs our imagination, creativity, and feeling.

The left side of our brain enables us to rationalise and gives us the sense of being
separate, whereas the right side is more aware of the unity of the bigger picture - that we
are not separate from one another but part of a whole.

Each of us are like droplets that come from, and must return to, the spiritual sea of
creation. The popular belief that we are separate is an illusion.

It is our attitude that separates us.

18

The interaction between Hod and Binah

as it works its way down the planes
19

Intention
As well as exploring our Motives for studying we also have to consider our Intention.

What is our Intention?

*What do you Intend to do with the

knowledge?

We can gather as much knowledge as we

want but it is of little value unless we
understand it, and put it to good use.

As we ascend the Tree of Life, Binah is the

last sephirah that has a vice attached to it.
After Binah it is Chokmah and this sephirah
represents Spiritual Truths. There are no
compromises with Spiritual Truths, and no
place for personality self worth issues.

*See Soul Functions Workbook for information on

Functions.

Avarice
Apart from Chokmah and Kether, all the other
sephiroth have a vice attached to them.

The vices are what trip us up.

Each sephirah represents a face of God. In our daily

life we want to be able to take on all the roles (God’s
faces) and be a true reflection of what that entails.

More information on the 10 Faces of God can be found in the

Netzach workbook.

The vices of the sephiroth represent a distortion or

misuse of energy.

The vice of Binah is Avarice. This is another word for greed. This is greed for knowledge,
and holding onto (hoarding) information instead of passing it on to others.

If the motive for studying is pure, then it follows the intention is also pure.

However, as personalities trying to play this game called life, we can find ourselves falling
foul of this vice if we feel threatened, or fearful of being out manoeuvred by others.

How then, can this vice manifest in our everyday life?

20

Avarice, the vice of Binah can manifest itself if we withhold information from others for
power purposes. In the workplace this can happen if we are trying to hold onto a powerful
position, and cautious about sharing information. Knowledge is power after all, or is it?

Knowledge on its own can lead to nothing if it is not understood, and understanding
requires effort.

Playing the game of: I know something you don’t know

Is another way we can trip ourselves up with this vice.

Smugness, arrogance, plagiarism, making statements and then not giving out the
information are all things to watch out for. Giving the false impression to others that we
are knowledgeable and know all the answers is another way we can fall foul.

More information on boosting self worth can be found in the Netzach workbook.

Manipulating people, events, and situations by not passing on information, or being

controlling and preventing others from obtaining information, is a misuse of power. It can
create disharmony, not only in the work place, but within relationships and social groups
too.

Something else we need to understand.

Knowledge

without

Wisdom or Understanding

can be dangerous

With knowledge comes the

responsibility of knowing how
to use it. We need to know how
to apply information so it is not
abused for power purposes, and
understand the responsibility
that goes with sharing
information so it is not misused
because it is not understood.

Silence is the virtue of Binah. The virtue of silence is not about cultivating secrecy or
creating a position of superiority. It is knowing when to speak and when to remain silent.

Before you speak, ask yourself: Is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, does it improve on the
silence?
Shirdi Sai Baba
21

Silence
Part of the focus of Binah is on Understanding.

Understanding how we can live in perfect balance and harmony.

Binah is the Divine Mother. Her role is to watch over her children and guide them towards
Attainment through Understanding.

Binah challenges us to find and strengthen the spiritual roots of faith in our life.

It is easy to lose our faith or be intolerant of the diverse beliefs of others particularly when
so many wars have been fought in the name of God and religion.

In Tiphareth we explore the different Prophets of the Ages. As individuals we may have a
particular affinity with one or more of the different faiths, ideals and religions.

The Lovers Path runs between Tiphareth and Binah.

One of the key meanings associated with The Lovers Path is that of Unity.

Perhaps, instead of focusing on the differences that separate us, we try instead to find
some middle ground. Something we can agree on, rather than solely concentrating on the
issues we disagree with. All the prophets of the Ages had an important message to pass
onto humanity. By remaining open and tolerant to all the different faiths, ideals and
religions we give ourselves a better chance of understanding one another and finding
universal unity and harmony.

The Universal Mother will help us to Understand. She will answer all our questions but first
we must learn how to listen.

Silencing the Conscious Mind

In Yesod we learn how to connect with

our personal spirit guide.

In Tiphareth we actively try to connect

with our soul.

In Chesed we knock on the door of the

Masters - the Teachers of Humanity.

In Binah we learn how to listen.

This is achievable because we have

the gift of Free Will. Free Will gives us
the freedom to make our own choices
and decisions.
22

This gift means we can choose to make the effort to train and discipline the mind to listen
so we may hear the Word of God.

Free Will means we have to ask for help. Without permission our guides cannot intervene.
When we pray we are asking for guidance. When we talk to angels we are asking for
assistance, and when we do a tarot reading we are seeking answers to our questions.

Whatever our method of asking for help, guidance or answers to questions, we have to put
ourselves in receptive mode in order to listen. We have to find a way of stilling the
conscious mind.

If the mind is constantly buzzing - we will never hear.

Silence enables us to listen. If we talk over the voices of others we will never hear what
they have to say.

Listening opens our channels of receptivity. Through meditation we can receive the
answers to our questions.

Meditation provides a way of detaching from the humdrum of daily life.

It takes discipline to make meditation part of our daily

routine.

We need to consider what is needed to silence the

conscious mind, and what is the best time of day to
contemplate.

Some people choose to meditate early in the morning,

others prefer the evening.

Some people like some sort of background noise going

on i.e music or sounds of nature, while others have a
strong need for peace and quiet. Which sort of person
are you?

How easily distracted are you?

Do you get bored?

What can you do to help yourself from becoming distracted?

It is important we Know Thyself, and understand our attitude towards meditation, and how
we operate as a personality.

This takes discipline and effort.

More information on Preparing for Meditation can be found on the OWL website:
www.orderofthewhitelion.com
23

Binah Awareness Meditation

The purpose of this meditation is to discipline the mind and focus on the sound of silence.

To prepare:

Read through the meditation and then try to follow it from memory.

This visualisation is most valuable when your eyes are closed and you visualise the
experience as you go along. If possible, get someone to read it out slowly to you with
sufficient pauses to allow you time to see the visualisation clearly. Then, if they too wish to
participate, allow them to do the same as yourself, and discuss your experiences
afterwards. It always helps to share things with another.

✦ If you have read the information on the OWL site, you will remember to sit in a
comfortable, relaxed position, either on the floor or in a chair with your back
straight. This helps with the flow of energy, and your palms uppermost resting
in your lap

✦ Breathe evenly and naturally

✦ You may wish to burn incense or use essential oils. These can help put you in
a relaxed state. If you use the same incense or oils each time you meditate this
will send a signal to the subconscious that you are moving into an altered state
of being, and raising your vibrations to connect with your higher self (intuition)

✦ Record any information received (page 45)

24

The Power of Silence

When you are ready start to relax your body. Feel each muscle soften as you work your
way down starting with your forehead.

Lower your eyebrows a little and allow your forehead to relax. Release any tension in your
face, jaw and neck. Slowly feel your jaw and mouth drop as you become more relaxed.
Feel all tension drift away. Now soften your shoulders and arms, and let your fingers rest
comfortably as your hands sit gently in your lap.

Relax your stomach and the base of your spine. Feel your legs and calves becoming more
relaxed.

Relax your feet and toes and continue to breathe gently - in and out - to your own rhythm.

You are feeling more, and more relaxed.

In your minds eye, start to build the Temple of Malkuth.

Become aware of the black and white tiles. Try to feel their coolness beneath your feet.

Watch as the wooden temple grows solidly around you and smell the pungent aroma of
rich moist earth. Notice the ivy and lilies as they cover the walls and spread out to form a
thick canopy overhead.

All around the light is very dim. The black and white tiles form a checkered carpet -
extending outwards, beyond the familiar ebony and ivory pillars that tower forever
upwards. Their peaks hidden amongst the thick foliage above.

The white flame of life burns steadily on the black double cubed altar. For a moment your
attention is captured watching the flickering glow as it randomly unveils blurry outlines
concealed in the dark.
25

There doesn't appear to be anyone around but you know, hidden within the gloomy light,
eyes are watching. Everything is silent. It seems strange being in this Temple of Earth on
your own, without anyone to guide or greet you.

And so you wait. There is nothing you can do - but wait.

After a while, a low grating noise breaks the silence. Curious to see where it is coming
from you follow the sound - through the dim light - to the back of the temple where you see
a giant boulder rolling slowly to one side. Eventually it stops, revealing a smooth circular
opening cut into stone. Step inside. Even though it feels cold and uninviting - you must go
inside.

Step carefully over the threshold. It is almost pitch black but you can just about make out
that you’re in the centre of a hollowed out cavern.

A hazy light starts to shimmer from an ancient clay pot resting on the top of a dusty stone
slab. Its muted glow throws out enough light for you to see what looks like an ancient
stone throne.

Go and sit on the throne.

It feels cold and unyielding.

The giant boulder rolls back slowly across the opening until finally, the last of the light
disappears sealing you inside the pitch black tomb.

You are absolutely alone. Gather your thoughts and try to concentrate only on feeling
completely alone. How does it feel?

There is nothing to see, nothing to hear - only the thoughts in your mind to distract you.

Allow all thoughts to drift away.

Stay with this feeling of being totally on your own.

Listen to the sound of silence.

Now try to hear the sound of the Mother Creator. The low humming note of the Mother
Earth as she rotates in space. What is the Spiritual Mother trying to tell you?
26

It is time to leave.

The heavy boulder slowly rolls open. The cave is flooded with light as you step back out
onto the black and white floor of Malkuth.

Allow the imagery of this temple of Earth to gradually dissolve, and when you are ready
bring your awareness back to your normal surroundings.

End of Meditation

Allow yourself plenty of time to return to everyday consciousness once the meditation is
complete.

Record any information received from the meditation on page 45.

It is essential you earth yourself after the meditation to prevent energy loss and ways to
earth or ground self include eating and drinking.

It is only when we are able to rise above the hazards and challenges of the world and into
the Silence of Binah, that we remain completely objective of our circumstances. In the
visualisation we are not supposed to be concentrating on anything except the feeling of
being absolutely alone and in touch with the inner spiritual being, and perhaps connecting
with a plan higher than just our personal life.

If you did not like the experience, contemplate on Why you did not like it.

Some people complain of feeling trapped once the boulder closes behind them, and some
of being bored. This is all part of life training.

If you feel bored in life what are you going to do about it? Moan or consider ways of
making every experience more pleasant and enjoyable?

It is all down to Attitude!

Each temple on the Tree of Life helps us in different areas of our lives, they are not all the
same.

The way the temples work for us is through the powers of visualisation and through our
senses and feelings. Everyone's experience will be different and what works for one
person may not work for someone else.

The following is a basic exercise designed to aid the initial process of building the imagery
around the Temple of Binah.

The images of all the Temples on the Tree of Life are already built in the ether and
connecting into that energy which has been used by thousands of others over the years
creates immense power. For this reason the description has been kept simple. It is not
wise to attempt any kind of temple or path-working without proper guidance and controls in
place.
27

Description of the Temple of Binah

The temple of Binah is one of sorrow, responsibility and grief. It is associated with inner
knowing and understanding.

We would use the Temple of Binah:

✦ To restore a loss of faith

✦ Release ourselves from problems connected to responsibility

The temple is represented by a cave or tomb which you can see from a distance, usually a
long way out at sea.

Binah aligns with the Universal Law of Polarity - the two sides of the coin.

As such there are two great Mother figures in Binah:

Aima, the bright fertile mother of creation, and Ama the dark sterile mother.

From the outside of the temple we watch an aspect of the dark sterile mother walking in
great sadness along the shoreline of a beach. She wears a black cloak and hood.

Inside the temple - the cave or tomb - it is very dark. There is only a tiny pin prick of light
and total silence.

The temple appears empty except for the altar. The altar is made of stone. On top of the
altar is a sack cloth although it is generally too dark inside the temple to see it.

The Archangel assigned to Binah is Tzafkiel. He wears very dark robes of black and looks
very sad. The angelic hosts are the Aralim - the Thrones. The Aralim are not light beings,
and because of this we are able to sit on them in the temple.
28

Later in the Workbook, we will be going through a more in-depth awareness and
meditation on the Temple of Binah.

*At the end of the meditation session it is very important to remember to always
allow the imagery to dissolve around you, and bring your awareness back to the
chair you are sitting on and the room you are sitting in.

Sorrow

Binah is sephirah number 3. The Magical Image of Binah is a Mature Woman.

Binah is the bright fertile mother of Creation and the dark sterile mother of the Underworld.

There are 3 aspects to Binah:

✦ Silence, as in the virtue

✦ Faith, this is finding the roots of your faith - your personal roots, and having
faith that the Mother will always be there even when you feel your most lonely

✦ Sorrow

The Spiritual Experience of Binah is a Vision of Sorrow.

Grief is an aspect of Binah. When you experience a sense of loss It is very easy to lose
your faith. There is also the sorrow that a mother feels when it is time for her children to
leave the nest, the grief at having to let her children go.

One of the titles of Binah is Marah, the Great Sea.

She is the bitter sea from which all life is born and must return to. In Binah we understand
that death is an illusion. *Death is simply moving from one state of existence into another.
*More information on the Phases of Life and Death can be found in the Geburah Workbook.
29

Binah represents the Law of Polarity: the two sides of the coin.

In life there is death, and with joy there is also sorrow. Without sorrow we could not fully
appreciate joy.

It is the sorrow and grief a mother feels as, unable to interfere, she is bound to allow her
children to find Understanding for themselves. Every child has the gift of free will and any
interference hinders their spiritual growth.

There are many mother goddesses that can be linked to Binah including Isis and Demeter.

The myths attached to these goddesses reflect the sorrow and grief associated with this
sephirah, and the mysteries of birth and death:

When Persephone, the daughter of Demeter was abducted by Hades and taken to the
Underworld, Demeter - consumed by grief - wandered the earth in search of her. During
this time of great sorrow and misery, Demeter abandoned her divine role and refused to
nourish the earth. This meant the existence of man was threatened. To save the plight of
man, the messenger Mercury was sent to Hades who agreed to compromise. For two-
thirds of the year Persephone would return to her mother while the other third would be
spent as bride of the Ruler of the Underworld. In the winter season, during the period that
Persephone spent with her husband the earth was barren, until the arrival of spring and
new life.

Isis was the ancient Egyptian Goddess of Life. She had the powers of life and death and
as such held the titles: Mother and Life, and Crone of Death. The myth attached to Isis as
goddess of rebirth is a story of great sorrow as she goes in search of her husband Osiris
who has been cut into pieces by his brother Set.

Isis found all the body parts except one. In her role as Giver of Life, Isis was said to have
created life from that which was lifeless. Isis breathed life back into Osiris and Horus was
conceived. Osiris became King of the Underworld, and together Isis and Horus created
and sustained all life.

Isis is also known as a Guide to the Underworld. She is often portrayed with her wings
outstretched. The imagery of the protective wings of Isis was depicted within the ancient
thrones of Egypt protecting the Pharaohs who sat there.

The angels of Binah are the Aralim, the Thrones. We can call upon the angels of Binah for
strength in times of great hardship and sorrow.

It is from our most difficult tests in life that we often learn and understand the most.

The follow meditation takes us to the shores of Binah. We do not enter the Temple of
Binah but remain seated by the shore.

The journey exploring the realms of this sephirah looks at the two aspects of the mother
goddess: the bright fertile mother of creation and the dark sterile mother who grieves for
the loss of her children.

The journey begins in Malkuth. From Malkuth the force of the Astral planes will lift us up
above the level of the soul to the realms of Daath. From the safety of above, we are
30

invited to observe the pilgrims on their path to enlightenment. We are not to join the
pilgrims on their journey but watch them as they attempt to cross the *bridge of
Daath.

*Aima, the dark sterile mother grieves for the loss of her children - all those who are unable to make the
transition; unable to cross the bridge of self confidence and doubt.

The bridge of Daath must be crossed for the pilgrims to reach Binah. It is as thin as the
edge of a sword. It is the sword of Damocles, and those who attempt to cross this bridge
must walk the tight-rope of self-confidence and doubt.

The journey continues until we reach the shores of Binah. Here we connect with Ama, the
dark sterile mother and contemplate on the meaning of sorrow, and then with Aima we
contemplate on the power of silence, and try to hear our own spiritual note - our own
sound.

Temple of Binah

Silently you enter the Temple of Malkuth.

The light is dim, but through the shadows you can just make out the black and white tiled
floor and hear the voices of the pilgrims.

In front of you is Sandalphon silhouetted by the glow of the central candle on the altar as
he stands before it, and you kneel on the silken cushions at his feet.

A gentle hand is placed on your head and he tells you to prepare for your journey to your
inner self. You are told of the value of silence and the importance of contemplation on the
meaning of silence as seen within yourself. And you wait - your head bowed in silence -
listening to the voice of the pilgrims.
31

You let yourself drift in the silence that ensues and almost without warning find yourself
once again beneath the ancient willow tree at the side of the temple. There is the soft
sound of sea lapping on hidden rocks to your right and you catch a glimpse of the silver
shell as Sandalphon raises it to his lips and blows.

A strange wind arises and you become aware of a presence beginning to surround you. It
is the force of the astral planes by whose love and strength you can raise yourself beyond
your personality and even your soul so that perhaps you may catch a glimpse of your
spiritual self. Feel their force close around you and lift you into the air.

Up, up, up .....

Finally you raise yourself above the level of the soul to the realms of Daath. But you will
only pass to cross it from above and look down, for the time has come for you to know just
what it means to cross the abyss on your journey to Binah. You find yourself now
enshrouded in clouds as your protection.

The atmosphere changes and you now find yourself directly over the abyss. A strange,
forbidding place barely seen beyond the clouds that swirl around it. It is at once like a
marsh of gloom and darkness. An abyss of lost souls struggling in the mire.

Look down from your safety and see the knife-edged sword bridge by which the pilgrims
cross on their journey to enlightenment. It is thin as the edge of a sword. The bridge of
Daath, the sword of Damocles and those who cross must walk the tight rope of self
confidence and doubt, their balance perfect and their heads held high with eyes trained
ahead less they are tempted - through their disbelief - to jump into the mire.

Look now and you will see the pilgrims coming towards the abyss. The adepts of our
world who have passed through the realms of Chesed and now seek to travel the path to
the top of the mountain. See them climbing the mountain, their lanterns before them and
their heads held high. The only support they have is their staff for this is their protection
and their point of balance.

So watch them as they climb and let your heart go with them as they attempt to cross.

The first ones reach the edge of the abyss and turn to wait for the others behind them. For
together they will raise their voices in the song of the pilgrims as they pass across the
abyss. Their strength and their balance being only that of their staff which represents the
strength of their own personal will.

So here they meet as one force of power on the bridge of mis-fortune, ready to cross the
terrible bridge that stands before them. United they stand, their voices raised in the sound
of the eternal song of the pilgrims. Watch them pass. See how they stand up to the
temptations and difficulties of Daath, and know that one day you too will be there with
them, and that you too must have the Will to face all things so you earn the right to cross
into the world of Binah.

Eventually they win the struggle and reach the other side and all at once you find yourself
beside them. Slowly you turn to look back and feel deep within your heart the sorrow of
those who watch beside you. Sorrow for the souls unable to make the transition - who
chose to plunge into the depths of the abyss.
32

A terrible grief of loss and loneliness - for there is nothing that can be done to change
things now.

With deep sadness you seat yourself on the shores on Binah and watch the pilgrims
continue on their way. And somewhere deep within you hear the voice of Ama - the dark
sterile call of sadness, and see the vision of a lonely mother grieving for the loss of her
child as she walks - cloaked in black - by the edge of the sea.

You find yourself contemplating now on the meaning of sorrow.

How do you experience sorrow?

Examine yourself and what you are feeling.

Put your attention in the middle of your body. Feel your heart. Your solar plexus. Your
stomach.

Ask yourself how you are feeling emotionally right now. Try to distinguish the feelings from
the thoughts you have in your head. Take out sorrow - your sorrow - and look at it.

Try to give it a voice. What is this sorrow saying to you, and why?

And so it is that you find yourself returning slowly from your silent contemplation.

Stay with these thoughts as you light a candle for you must remain for a while on the shore
of Binah.

You have come a long way in your travels but it is not without rewards. There is the power
of Silence. The contemplation of faith. The Mother Goddess.

The Mother Goddess within you that nurtures and protects through all adversity. Aima -
the bright fertile mother that resides in the womb of the sea.

Now listen. Listen to the power of the sea. Allow yourself to move into the warmth and
depth of its being, and listen. Listen.

Raise yourself up from the vibration of the feeling you have been experiencing and feel the
love of your spiritual self. The love of Aima - magical image of Binah - in the womb of
creation. Allow yourself to sink into her. Feel her wrap around you and hear her voice and
what she is saying to you. See if you can hear - amongst the ebb and flow of the tide -
your own spiritual note. Your own sound. The sound that tells you all is well. All is well.
33

It is with regret that you return again to the shore. The music of the sea of Binah fades but
if you listen carefully in the still of the night you will still be able to hear the eternal call of
your spiritual love. All you have to do is listen.

The last sounds of the sea abate, and a strange wind begins to swirl around you. It seems
at first to be a peculiar state of affairs, but again you rise into the air and this time you
return on the wings of your faith to the realms of Malkuth.

Feel yourself being lowered down gently.

Down, down, down through the planes until gradually you settle once again on the black
and white tiled floor of the temple of Malkuth.

Sandalphon is there to greet you and he takes you with him to the edge of the pool that
stands beneath the willow tree.

And to the side you see something else.

It seems gloomy and dark and you don't want to go in but Sandalphon says it is only a
graveyard.

But it is dark and silent, and all you can hear and see is the wind moaning around the
gravestones and the mist swirling before you. But you decide you will walk there. You feel
totally alone and suddenly - out of the mist - a memorial stone appears before you, and
you shiver as a sudden chill runs through your body. Peering closely at the stone you can
see your name engraved upon it.

Nothing else. Just your name.

Time has passed and your present life is over but someone, somewhere has remembered
you, and as you gaze silently at it you become aware of a change in the atmosphere. A
feeling of anticipation. A piercing light swirls towards you through the mist and remains
poised over the stone in front of you.

Listen and wait, for that fiery light is about to engrave your epitaph, in burning flame
beneath your name - just as somebody has remembered you.

Is this the epitaph you would write

for yourself?

Is this the way you would like to be

remembered?
34

The image fades and you become aware again of Sandalphon standing beside you. You
look at him in silence and he says nothing. You turn and walk with him out of the
graveyard and back again towards the altar, and in total silence you walk across the black
and white tiled floor and kneel on the silken cushions between the mighty pillars and bow
your head in silent contemplation.

And then, though the silence once again you hear the sound of running water.

You look up and between the pillars you see the image of an ancient Indian battling his
way down stream. Sandalphon smiles and tells you that water is the essential element of
life on earth, in the realms of Malkuth. He asks you to look at this Indian to watch how he
handles the elements and to reflect this within yourself when you enter your physical
world. But before you do so, in your minds eye, you must ring the bell on the altar to
indicate your return to the realms of your earthly life and as you watch this Indian travelling
down river, maybe you will see something in him that you can recognise and aspire to
within yourself.

It is time to return to your earthly surroundings now.

Your candle will remain alight shining ever as a beacon on the spiritual path that goes
before you.

Remember this Indian for he is a reflection of yourself and a reminder of where you have
been.

End of Temple of Binah

It is normal to receive information during

each meditation. It is a good idea to
make a log of everything you may get.
Do not dismiss anything. This record is
useful to refer to and gradually as your
awareness increases the bigger picture
will begin to emerge and you may start to
see a pattern.

Our spirit guides can help by impressing

upon us thoughts and images to help us
in our day to day lives but we must give
them permission.

Without permission they cannot help.

The Cosmic Mother

Binah is the Universal Mother and the sephirah of Understanding.

Awe inspiring sites such as the Sphinx, the pyramids on the Giza Plateau and the
architecture of the ancient Mayan buildings at Izapa prove to us that our early ancestors
understood a great deal about the bigger picture and the movements of the stars.

Although we do not fully understand how it was achieved, or the reasons why, research
has shown that many ancient temples and sites were perfectly positioned to face north,
south, east and west, and astronomically in alignment with the stars.

The three pyramids on the Giza plateau are believed to have been built in alignment with
the three stars on Orion’s belt. The Kings chamber within the Great Pyramid is also linked
to Orion while the Queens chamber is linked to Sirius. In Cambodia, there appears to be a
correlation between the temples around Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, and the
constellation Draco.

10,500 BC seems to be a common date linked to the stars, the Nazca lines etched in Peru,
Stonehenge, Giza, the Sphinx, and ancient sites in Cambodia.

There are many ancient and sacred sites around the world that share common features.
Other similarities include using temples to prepare the soul for the journey into the
afterlife.

The Mayans also appeared to have advanced understanding of the movements of the
universe and our solar system.

The Mayan belief was that time existed as a series of cycles - world age cycles - that
would repeat over, and over, again.

To study and understand the meaning of time, synchronicity and conscious awareness the
Mayans developed astrological models of the universe. Without any high tech equipment
the Mayans calculated the orbits of the earth, sun and moon and worked out calendars for
them.

The Mayan Long Count Calendar covered a cycle that lasted for approximately 5,125
years.

The full cycle of the Long Count is thought to have been completed when 13 bak’tuns
passed. To the Mayans 13 bak’tuns covered the cycle of the 4th wave of creation.

The Mayan Popol Vuh tells the Story of Creation. Within this story is an explanation of
the Creator’s initial attempts to make humans. The story continues by describing the final
attempt that was accomplished by constructing people with maize producing the True
People. Through the cultivation of maize the Mayans were able to change from hunter
gatherers to an advanced level of civilisation.
36

There are many theories surrounding the dates when the Mayan Calendar first began but
it is widely believed that the 5,125 year cycle reached completion around the December
winter solstice in 2012.

When Mayan carvings depicting Long Count dates were studied, links with notable
astronomical conjunctions were found. It would appear the Mayans were able to predict
eclipses hundreds of years in advance and identify an area in the heart of the Milky Way
galaxy they called the Black Rift. The Black (or Dark) Rift is a black ridge that runs along
the Milky Way. It is caused by interstellar dust clouds. For the Mayans this region
represented the home of the Cosmic Mother whose birth canal was represented by the
rift.

Binah is associated with the colour black, and Aima - the bright fertile Mother of Creation.

The rift was also called the Black Road; the Road to the Underworld, where people go
when they die.

Binah is the Great Sea from which all life emerges, and all must return. Polarity is the
Universal Law of Binah. The polarity of Aima is Ama. Ama is the dark sterile mother. She
represents the other side of the coin - the Sorrow and Grief aspects of Binah.

At the same time the Mayan calendar is believed to have ended, something else of major
significance took place as the Sun lined up with the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy. This
alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years. Mayan researchers believe the Maya
knew about the alignment of the Sun with the centre of the Milky Way. This occurrence
involves the winter solstice sun joining the dark rift in the Milky Way which happens as a
result of the slow wobbling of the Earth’s axis causing the stellar frame (star clusters) to
slowly shift. The Mayans knew that the great rift, or birth canal, of the Cosmic Mother
moved closer to the dawning sun with every winter solstice.

Illustrations showing this event can be seen in the architecture of the ancient Mayan
buildings particularly at Izapa in southern Mesoamerica. The Mayan monuments (stelae)
at Izapa describe scenes from Mayan Creation mythology. The stories around Mayan
mythology include the fall of Seven Macaw and the death of an old cosmological
system focused upon the polar region.

The stelae reveal that after the death of Seven Macaw the focus shifts to the opposite
orientation with the head of an alligator shown to be in opposition to Seven Macaw and
situated in what is believed to depict the centre of the sky. It is the location of the centre
of the Milky Way galaxy. The December winter solstice sun rises over the stela
(monument) showing the dead Seven Macaw. Mayan researchers have interpreted this to
mean: the polar god is dead, the solar god is reborn, with the rebirth linked to the
alignment with the Milky Way.

The Mayan Popol Vuh is the Story of Creation. Qabalists also believe that humanity is the
fourth wave of creation. The first wave was the evolution of flame following the big bang.
The second wave was the formation of the solar system. The third wave was conscious
thought, and the fourth wave was the evolution of physical matter.

With the Long Count Mayan calendar at an end, it remains to be seen if we are on the
brink of universal change as we move into a new cycle and the Age of Aquarius.

Experiencing Binah

It is in Binah, through the virtue of Silence that we aspire to attain Spiritual Understanding.

Meditation and Silent Contemplation can help us to raise our vibrations and contact higher
forces, increase our concentration and develop insight.

Silencing the conscious mind helps us to access our creative potential and focus on our
life path.

The idea is to take control of the mind rather than be controlled and distracted by sounds
and random thoughts that flow in and out.

The astral worlds will come to us but for us to connect on a higher level we need to train
and discipline the mind to raise ourselves above the level of the personality.

We need to prepare our minds for silence, and put it in receptive mode. Which means
allowing ourselves time out from chatter, worries and day to day concerns.

There are many ways to meditate, and many ways in which we can benefit from this
practice. Meditation can help stimulate our creative powers into action and overcome
mental blocks. Meditation can also help reduce negative thinking, overcome fears, ease
stress, and aid healing.

We can get into the experience of Binah by exploring the different ways in which we can
meditate and receive inner guidance.

Meditation does not have to take place within a religious environment however, all the
major religions encourage it, and they all have their own unique style.
38

For example:

Christian meditation focuses on the form of prayer and repeating prayers or passages
within the bible. This concentrated method helps the individual to reflect on the meaning
and strengthen their relationship with God. For Christians the bible tells them to think
about God’s Word and meditate day and night so they will obey it. This style of meditating
is focused thinking and takes much effort. The aim is to allow the Holy Spirit to stimulate
the life-giving Word of God.

Muslims, during prayer are required to meditate and concentrate on God through reciting
the Koran. This strengthens the individuals connection with God and helps them to be
guided towards Truth, and maintain internal peace no matter what is happening in
everyday life.

Hindu’s use Yoga and controlled breathing to prepare themselves for meditation. There are
many different styles of Hindu meditation. Dhyana is the journey of the mind. In Hindu
philosophy the mind has the creative potency of God.

What you think - so you become

Hindu meditation is observing the thoughts that travel in and out of the mind in silence and
with detachment. This allows one to enter the deeper part of being where all is silence.
Silence frees the mind and allows the heart to answer all questions, and discover the truth
about self and the world around us.

Meditation does not have to be confined to sitting down.

To begin with many people find it easier to meditate actively

either while out walking or even when doing jobs around the
house.

We can choose how we want to talk to God.

It doesn’t matter how we meditate

What matters - is that we Do

Finding a way of meditating that suits us best can help us to

silence and concentrate the mind, and open doorways of
understanding.

Spirit of Binah
Binah, Chokmah and Kether make up the Supernal Triangle. These three sephiroth relate
to:

✦ Light - Kether

✦ Sight - Chokmah

✦ Sound - Binah

Sound is a very powerful tool to inspire spiritual feelings.

So too is prayer. Prayer is an important part of many faiths and religions. It helps us to
establish a deep connection with the spiritual source and commune with God.

While Christians use a bell and ancient Jews used a ram’s horn or trumpet to announce
the time of prayer, Muslims summon the call to prayer using a loud voice.

The idea of how to make the call to prayer was believed to have been channelled to one of
the Muslim Ansars (helpers) in a dream. The compelling call to prayer is made more potent
and the message amplified by the skills and strength of voice of the person reciting it.

Some religions believe the act of praying is more powerful and meaningful if said in
congregation.

Sacred chanting can be very moving. Listening to chanting can lift the spirits and restore
faith.

Chanting is another way we can remove ourselves away from the distractions of daily life.

It is practised in many religions. Chanting religious text can inspire the faithful to devotion
and prayer. Hindus use chanting to energise their life and increase the devotion within.
This devotion is a power. It is called the Power of Devotion.

Chanting and the use of sound can also be used to heal and restore balance.

Everything in the universe is energy - vibrating energy.

Every cell in our body has a unique sound. The cells communicate with one another by
singing. Stress or toxins can cause the cells to become dysfunctional. Channels can
become closed, leading to dis-ease and disharmony. Sound can re-open the channels.

Chanting calms and clears the mind, and when the vibrations of the chant sound within our
body, the cells respond. Our cells resonate with the vibration and harmony can be
restored. Sound can be used to wake up sleeping cells to resume normal functioning.
Our cells can be resurrected and brought back to life.
40

Mantric chanting is another way to raise vibrations and free the mind. Mantra is a good
way to prepare for, and enter into, meditation. Mantra is a sound, word or group of words
that are repeated either out loud or internally. The repetitions create sound vibrations.
The clearer the sound, the stronger the vibration. It is important to choose words or
sounds that uplift and keep you focused.

Every Hindu mantra begins with Om or Aum. It is the sacred sound of Hinduism. It is the
sound that is believed to have originated at the time of the creation of the universe:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

There are waves of sound, a vibration that reverberates continuously throughout the
universe. Mantra is a living force, it is sometimes called God in the form of sound.

If you make the sound of Aum you can feel the vibrations running through your body. The
vibrations stimulate our channels and help us experience the love of God in our heart and
mind.

Get into the spirit of Binah by choosing your own sound, your own mantra.

Choose a mantra that matches what you would like to achieve.

If you would like to feel more peaceful then repeating the word peace can help you to
achieve a more peaceful state of being.
41

The Power of Sound

Ancient cultures used sound to heal. Modern day medicine also uses sound to help with a
large range of injuries and ailments including ultrasound to break up kidney stones and
shrink tumours.

The Aboriginal people of Australia have used the strange sound of the didgeridoo for many
thousands of years to heal.

Drums and rattles are ancient musical instruments. The low frequency sound from drums
and the ultra sound produced by rattles were used by our ancestors to encourage healing.

Pythagoras regarded music to be highly important to health. Along with his disciples,
Pythagoras chanted melodies composed to heal anger and the aggressive passions of the
psyche.

Studies of acoustics and archaeology have shown that many ancient sites and temples
were built in a way to enhance their acoustic properties. Medieval cathedrals were styled
to resonate with chanting, and the design of Mayan flat topped pyramids enabled the
priests of the time to address large numbers of people. The Mayan pyramids also had
stucco covering the gaps between the stones. This too would have helped to amplify
sound.

The wisdom from the ancients not only included advanced knowledge of the universe, it
also included the advanced use of sound.

Built-in amplified sound is a common feature present in many ancient sites.

Our ancient ancestors recognised the power of sound and used architecture to direct and
amplify sound for rituals and to honour deities. So, not only were many ancient sites and
temples built in alignment with the stars and used to help with the passage after death,
they were also designed in a way that intensified the effects of sound.

An acoustically balanced area is essential to effectively convey a message through music

or prayer. Good church acoustics help to ensure everyone can hear the sermon.

The correct pitch is also very important.

Research on the effects of low frequency sound has revealed that infrasound (very low
frequency sound) can affect brain wave activity and other biological functions.

F sharp is the harmonic of our planet Earth. It is a very low sound. The Earth resonates to
the frequency of F sharp.

F sharp acts as a connecting point. It is the basic harmonic that bridges together all notes.
It is the key Native Americans use to tune their sacred flutes to serenade the Mother Earth,
and the low pitch at which the Tibetan monks chant Ohhmm.
42

F sharp helps to induce a deep hypnotic trance. It is the key that is in perfect harmony
with the human body.

Within the Great Pyramid at Giza, an F sharp chord is present in the Kings Chamber.

The sarcophagus inside the Kings Chamber is made of granite. Experiments have shown
that when struck, the sarcophagus sends out a *humming vibration so strong the whole
chamber vibrates and fills with sound.

As well as the sarcophagus, the chamber is also lined with granite. The walls, floor and
ceiling are made of granite. Granite contains quartz which is well-known for its vibrational
properties.

Ritual chanting may have been enhanced by the acoustic properties of the chamber but
the sounds the chamber responds to most of all are those that are far below the pitch of a
human voice. Acoustic studies have revealed that the Kings Chamber is extremely
responsive to low frequency sound.

Above the granite ceiling in the Kings chamber there are **four more chambers. Each of
these additional chambers has a flat roof made of granite beams. The beams are
precisely arranged, they differ in size and some have deep grooves cut into them. The
various widths and lengths of the granite beams and precise cuts, when vibrating, produce
different sounds and pitches. As well as providing stability and support for the masonry
above the Kings Chamber, the additional chambers help to boost the acoustic effect by
allowing the sound, the vibrating granite, to resonate unrestricted and flow freely
throughout the Queens Chamber and Gallery.

As the Kings Chamber is receptive to sound lower than that of the human voice it is
believed the sound of the Earth’s vibrations rotating in space cause the chamber to *hum.
The Earth rotating in space is a sound that most people today are completely unaware of
because it is beyond the range of human hearing.

Note: *Bees, Stability and the Backbone all correspond to

Saturn and Binah:

Bees have a natural ability to build perfect hexagonal

shapes. Contained within the comb the bees tend and
raise their brood. The hexagonal is not only the most
effective use of space it is also one of the strongest
shapes.

The design of the **four chambers resembles the Tet or

Djed Pillar, one the oldest and most significant symbols in
ancient Egypt. It is the symbol of the Back Bone of the
resurrected god Osiris and represents stability.

Low sound travels far and wide.

This sound may have travelled freely through the air shafts, that run from inside the Kings
Chamber to the outer walls of the Pyramid, and beyond to the outside world.

There is no evidence that proves the Great Pyramid was used as a tomb. So what then,
would have been the ancient Egyptians motive for building the pyramids? What was the
43

purpose of the Great Pyramid and the reason behind the design of the chambers and
shafts?

Was it for initiates seeking to connect and receive enlightenment from the gods or spiritual
rebirth?

Was it built to map the stars and tune into the Earths magnetic energy field?

If sound can heal, restore harmony and re-open channels in the physical body, can it also
open spiritual channels and gateways to other worlds?

Does the Power of Sound (Binah)

Open

The *Doorway to Enlightenment (Chokmah)?

*The path that runs between Binah and Chokmah on the Tree of Life is The Empress. The Hebrew
name for The Empress tarot card is Daleth. Daleth means Door.

The Power of Silence

Recording events and personal responses can be invaluable for future
reference.
If at first you don't seem to see much in the
meditation, don't worry. This will likely improve as
you go on.
Concentrate on what you do get, rather than what
you don't, and give yourself plenty of time to
peruse on it. It is surprising what you can get out
of an apparently duff meditation.

✦ Mood beforehand:

✦ Landscape: were you able to easily build the Temple of Malkuth around
you?

✦ Were you aware of eyes watching you?

✦ How did you feel as you entered the tomb?

✦ Did you sit on the Throne? How did it feel?

✦ What was it like inside the Tomb?

✦ What thoughts occupied your mind? Were you able to let unwanted
thoughts drift away?

✦ Did you feel trapped or bored? If so, why?

✦ Could you hear the note of the Earth? Did you hear the sound of the
Mother Creator?

✦ Message / symbolism:

Binah Consolidation
In Binah we explore the roots of our Faith. Faith can be a lonely place. It is often based
on concrete evidence, so sometimes it is easier for people to disbelieve than it is to
believe.

How can we believe in something that we cannot see?

Our visible world, the mountains, trees, rivers, plants, animals etc were created without
any help from man. Nature exists independent from man.

Do we believe our Visible World was Created by an Invisible Creator?

Our beliefs tend to be shaped according to how we use our senses. We have been
conditioned to believe in only what we can scientifically prove and physically hear and see.

Like the formation of customs and traditions, disbelief too, is man made.

Our ancient ancestors had a much greater understanding of the unseen world and nature.

They understood how the visible and invisible worlds are entwined, and the principles of
sound.

Sound can affect the cells in our body. In the same way unhealthy food can prevent our
bodies from working effectively so too can unhealthy sounds. We need to set healthy
sound boundaries and do what we can to control our sound environment. For example,
turn the TV and radio down and limit the time spent listening to negative words. Too much
toxic sound can send us into overload and drag us down. The healing properties of sound
and vibration can destabilise and destroy unhealthy cells, but it is not only humans who
respond to sound.

The mineral kingdom and crystals respond to sound activation. Every crystal has an
individual note at which it resonates. Stimulating crystals with electromagnetic waves
makes them vibrate and give off sound energy. This sound can be felt as well as heard
with different sized crystals emitting different frequencies. Activated crystal singing bowls
can calm and relax tired minds. The various tones can also be used to heal and balance
the chakra energy centres.

Research into the Plant Kingdom has revealed that plants too are sensitive to sound and
communicate with one another by making clicking noises.

Within the Animal Kingdom many animals and marine life can produce and hear a greater
range of sounds than humans.

Whales and dolphins send out pulsed sounds of high intensity and frequency to navigate
and identify the size and shape of objects. Whales are able to hear and decode very low
or very high frequencies which humans cannot hear. Divers have recorded feeling Blue
Whale sounds rather than hearing them. Sound travels much faster in water than in air
and low pitch sounds often travel greater distances. The deep low-pitched sounds that
47

Blue Whales make can be picked up over 500 miles away. Bats also have a special sonar
ability that they use to help them navigate around other creatures and objects.

Sound can affect matter, levitate objects, shatter glass and is purported to have brought
down the walls of Jericho. Research has shown how small objects and living organisms
can be manipulated and controlled through the use of sound when acoustic waves of
energy overlap.

There has been much speculation surrounding how heavy blocks were moved and
precisely placed in the construction of many ancient sites around the world.

Did the wisdom of the ancients include knowledge of levitation through sound or other
magical means to lift such heavy blocks?

The power of sound must not be underestimated.

In our everyday life sound can lift our mood. It can heal, energise and motivate us to
dance and sing. Sound can inspire us and open our channels of creative energy.

The ancient Egyptians did not restrict their thinking to only believing in the physical,
material world. Is it possible they found a way to connect with more advanced worlds
through the vibration of Sound?

To the tone of F sharp, ancient priests are believed to have musically played, hummed or
chanted to connect their initiates and elevate the dead to the spirit world.

As we ascend the Tree of Life the teachings become much less tangible.

What is it that restricts us from raising our conscious minds and attitudes above the level
of understanding of the physical plane, and tuning into these higher energies in the same
way our ancient ancestors could?

In Chesed we learn about the importance of Obedience. This is obedience to the word of
God. In Binah we focus on Understanding the word of God.

Obedience comes from Faith

Faith is what helps us to understand when it is time to let go and surrender to the Word of
God.

If we do not believe - we will not obey.

In Binah we learn the importance of silencing the conscious mind.

It does not matter how we choose to do this but if we do not still the mind then we will not
be able to listen.

Faith comes from listening. We have to discipline and train the mind to listen so we may
hear.

It is often during our darkest moments that we struggle to listen. Emotional disturbances
are usually what prevents or blocks us from tuning in. Uncontrolled emotion is
48

uncontrolled energy which can be very draining and leave us feeling lethargic. It takes
discipline to detach and find a point of calm, and set time aside to pray and meditate.

Binah - the Universal Mother - sits at the top of the black pillar of Form on the Tree of Life.
This is the pillar of Water. One of the titles of Binah is Marah, the Great Sea.

If we look at a picture of the Tree of Life and study the black pillar of form we can see how
the three sephiroth: Hod, Geburah and Binah flow one into the other all the way down the
right hand side.

Hod is the Water Temple. It is in Hod that we examine the strength of our personal Will,
our Attitude to Life, and learn the importance of building correct images in the Mind.

Geburah is the sephirah of Elimination and Purification. In the Egyptian temple of

Geburah we experience the Will of the Soul and commit to eliminate the negative traits in
our personality that inhibit our growth and cause us pain and sorrow.

The path that runs between Hod and Geburah is The Hanged Man. The Hanged Man
tarot card is one of the three maternal (or element) cards. The element it represents is
Water. This path takes us from the level of the personality attitude (Hod) to the level of the
Will of the Soul (Geburah), and keywords include surrender and freedom. This tarot card
in a reading can indicate a readiness to let go of negative habit patterns.

It is in Yesod that we examine the cycles in our life. The Hanged Man represents a personality that is ready
and willing to set the Self free.

Above Geburah is the sephirah Binah. Sorrow is an aspect of Binah. Without sorrow we
would not fully appreciate joy, but it is often from our most difficult tests in life that we learn
and understand the most.

The path that runs between Geburah and Binah is The Chariot. Keywords for The Chariot
path include Trust and Receptivity. The *Chariot tarot card is associated with the zodiac
sign of Cancer. Cancer is ruled by the Moon and aligns with Yesod. Yesod is the sephirah
of the Sea; the Sea of Subconscious.

*Cheth is the Hebrew word associated with the Chariot Tarot card and it means Fence or Enclosure. We
need structure and controls in life - without them there would be chaos.

By looking deeper into the Tree of Life and the 4 Worlds and not restricting our thinking,
we can learn a lot and help ourselves to understand more about how the sephiroth overlap
and interact, and how their influence becomes more ethereal as it ascends the extended
ladder.

Our physical brain is influenced by our personality attitude. Our attitude affects everything.

Binah helps us to attain Spiritual Understanding.

The spiritual experience of Binah is a Vision of Sorrow. Binah is the mother who grieves
for her children who cannot make the transition out of the darkness (ignorance) and into
the light (understanding).

We need to Trust and have Faith that the Great Mother will always be there, watching
over us.
49

Without faith nothing can take form or have any substance.

Water is a great conductor of sound. If we examine in more depth the sephiroth on the
black pillar of water, and learn how to silence and discipline the conscious mind, we may
be able to tune in and listen to the voice of the spirit.

The sephirah after Binah is Chokmah. Binah represents the Womb of Creation.

Chokmah is the stimulating Force that creates Life.

Worlds Apart

Written by Jenni Shell, founder of the Mystery School of Maat and The Order of the
White Lion, this book describes the motivation behind her life’s work. Available in
paperback, Kindle and iBooks format.

In this highly inspiring autobiography, Jenni Shell traces the

circumstances and consequences of traumatic events in two early
childhoods: the one of her mother in the Edwardian era, and her own in
the last years of the Second World War and after.

Although her mother had been diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia,

there were indications that she might have been silenced, and it
became her daughter’s heartfelt commitment to bring to light the ‘truth’
about what might have been a tragic misdiagnosis.

Trying to understand her mother’s suffering led the young woman to discover spiritual
meaning in many so-called ‘delusional’ realities and synchronicities, which seemed to
contradict her traditional upbringing. We become witness to a life-long search in an
attempt to reconcile reason, practicalities and the soul’s cosmic way of communication,
and how this experience led her into mediating and teaching what she had learnt to many
others.

Worlds Apart is, in a personal sense, a late and moving story of redemption: an account of
the never told events that triggered her mother’s illness, and ultimately the path of healing
commenced in the next generation.

In 1981 Jenni founded Maat – a Qabalah or mystery school designed to inspire individuals
to put into practice their life as personality, soul and spirit, beyond any rigid perspective.
Well over 6,000 people from all walks of life attended, and have had the chance to work
closely with this powerful, down to earth and modest teacher.

Despite her exposure to the public, Jenni has not sought a great deal of public attention.
Worlds Apart shows why. Her whole life’s focus - initially triggered by family trauma – has
always remained in exploring the fine line between what can be misunderstood as mental
illness on the one hand, and the urgent language of spiritual impressions on the other.
Students felt attracted to and deeply understood by this approach.

The need to understand the vital forces of the psyche and adjust one’s life practically in
order to grow as a human being, has always been at the centre of her life and teachings.

Tree of Life workbooks in the series

© Copyright Jenni Shell and Lorraine Morgan

The following workbooks are step by step guides, designed for beginners to aid the
student on their journey of self discovery exploring the Qabalistic Tree of Life.

As in all things, a good place to start is at the beginning and the sephirah of the Earth
Plane:

• Malkuth - The Kingdom

When studying the Qabalah we often start off at the bottom of the Tree of Life, and begin
by familiarising ourselves with the sephirah of the Earth Plane known as The Kingdom.
The Hebrew name for this sephirah is Malkuth. Malkuth represents the physical plane - the
world we live in, and the way we handle the energy of the material world. We would look to
the Temple of Malkuth to help us find answers if we are having problems keeping
ourselves grounded; experiencing challenging issues around money, or if we want to find
solace and peace to enable us to re-coup lost energy.

• Yesod - The Foundation

The temple of Yesod is a beautiful sea temple. This sephirah focuses on the power of our
subconscious; our emotional foundation and emotional stability. Yesod also links us to the
Astral Worlds and Spirit Guides. We would look to the Temple of Yesod for help with the
responsive process; handling emotional reactions; connecting with our personal guides,
and accessing past life information.

• Hod - Splendour of the Mind

The sephirah Hod focuses on our Attitude and the power of Thought. Here we explore the
Tunnel of the Mind and become more consciously aware of the sort of images we build in
our mind. We would look to the Ice temple of Hod to help us to examine our attitude, and
change any images that may be negative to our growth. Hod also helps us to build positive
imagery eg. Magical Images; to form commitments, and to find the real truth of our
thoughts.

• Netzach - Victory over Feelings

The teachings of Netzach help us to gain Victory over our Feelings and lift ourselves out of
the restrictions of the personality, helping us to raise to the level of the soul - the sephirah
Tiphareth. Netzach acts as a springboard to the upper part of the Tree, but first we have to
become aware of how we really feel, and explore our attitude towards relationships -
including the relationship we have with Self. Netzach helps us to discover the true nature
of who we really are; the magic that lies hidden within just waiting to be brought to life. We
would look to the Emerald temple of Netzach for creative inspiration; to help us deal with
52

polarity and relationship issues, and to connect with the magical energy of the rawness of
nature.

• Tiphareth - Devotion to the Great Work

The sephirah Tiphareth takes us into the realms of the Soul where we get the opportunity
to connect and commune with the soul and higher more evolved guides. The virtue of
Tiphareth is Devotion to the Great Work and it is important for us to remember that if we
wish to pursue spiritual work and be of service in some way to others we must be prepared
to work on ourselves, and help our Self rise above the level of the personality when times
are challenging. Tiphareth helps us to heal ourselves so we may remain balanced and in
harmony no matter what is happening in our everyday lives.

• Geburah - Vision of Power

In Geburah we become aware of mightier forces and begin to understand the role of the
Soul, and the purpose of Karma. The challenges we face in this life are linked to our past
lives. Geburah helps to expose traits within our personality that bind us to the continuous
cycle of birth, death and rebirth, and reveals the links we share with others.

It is in Geburah that we experience the Will of the Soul.

• Chesed - Mercy

Chesed is where the journey really begins. Part One of Chesed takes us in Search of the
Truth. Here we explore the Bigger Picture and attempt to strengthen our connection with
the Teachers of Humanity - evolved Masters who can teach us how to walk in Time with
the natural order of the Universe thus drawing us nearer to finding peace for the soul.

In Workbook Two we learn about the Evolution of Flame and the first wave of creation.
This workbook raises our awareness of the role the angels and archangels play in the
bigger picture, and how they can help us on our journey to enlightenment. In the Temple
of Chesed we may catch a glimpse of the part we play in the grand scheme of Life, and
find out how we too may be of service to others - just as the Masters, who have walked
this journey before us, have been in service to us.

• Binah - Understanding

Binah represents the Womb of Creation and Mother of Form.

In this sephirah, at the top of the black pillar of Form, we explore the Principles of Sound
and learn how to Silence the Conscious Mind to hear the call of the Spiritual Mother who
watches over her children.

Binah is Aima - the bright, fertile Mother of Creation and Ama - the dark, sterile Mother of
the Underworld.
53

It is in Binah that we examine the roots of our Faith and look deeper into the Four Worlds
and extended Tree of Life.

• Chokmah Soul Functions

In Chokmah we explore the force of our Creative Power and decide how we can be of
Service to Humanity. This Workbook is an Introduction to Soul Functions and can be used
in conjunction with the Chokmah Workbooks. Most people are unaware of their Soul
Functions or how to perform them in everyday life. To realise our full potential we need to
know how to direct our creative power. The Soul Function Workbook explains in more
detail what the functions mean and how to recognise them.

• Chokmah - Wisdom

Chokmah is the sephirah of Freedom and Spiritual Truths. It is the sephirah that aligns
with the Will of the Spirit and Spiritual Direction.  In this region of the Tree of Life the aim is
to contact our creative power, and bring it down to earth.

In Chokmah Workbook One we explore how we use the senses and how we can further
stimulate and balance the two hemispheres of the brain to spark the sixth sense (intuition)
and third eye into action.

Chokmah is also the sephirah of Wisdom.

In Chokmah Workbook Two the emphasis is on Divine Wisdom and looking at ways to
enter inner worlds of existence. This helps us to develop our psychic ability, and gain
insights pertaining to the destiny and spiritual direction of the whole of humanity.

• Kether - the Crown

Situated at the top of the Tree of Life on the middle pillar of equilibrium, Kether represents
Spiritual Perfection. At this level we are dealing with the intangible. Therefore, as with all
the previous sephiroth in this series of workbooks, the approach to Kether is a practical
one. In this workbook we attempt to see through the veil of our earthly perceptions. We
explore the existence of other dimensions and try to connect with more advanced
energies, and - by using an Inner Spirit Meditation - enter the dwelling place of our spirit.
