It should be noted that variant units (a) and (b) are not only mutually
exclusive, but when combined present a most peculiar situation within modern
eclectic praxis: the majority of MSS are claimed to be correct in their wording of the 9-
word opening portion of the verse, in contrast with the four leading varying alternate
readings of Í L (1241) aur c vg / Ì B / Ì (f ) / D (33 892); yet every member of that
75 45 1
same “correct” majority as well as some of the varying witnesses from the first
portion unitedly err in regard to the 7-word inclusion that immediately follows in
those same MSS, leaving only 4 MSS that immediately preceding were judged to be
wrong suddenly becoming the bearers of true witness.

The four verses Luke 22:17-20 are treated as a single unit in NA . Variant 27
units (a), (b), (c), and (d) pertain to verse 17; variant units (e), (f), and (g) pertain to

The two verses Luke 22:43-44 are treated as a single unit in NA , but are 27
double-bracketed, thus indicating the editors’ view that this passage is not original to
Luke. One might thus assume that this entire verse should not be considered, since
the editors reject its originality. However, it is significant that this verse demonstrates
– even where a lengthy passage is otherwise rejected – that the remaining editorial
choices still establish an “original” form of the text of that verse (with or without the
presumed interpolation) that appears in no extant manuscript! Variant unit (a) relates
only to the inclusion or omission of the bracketed passage, and is not involved in the
determination of zero support. Otherwise, variant unit (b) relates to verse 43, and for
that verse shows the support of all inclusion MSS except D Q Θ Ψ pc; variant units (c)
and (d) pertain to verse 44, which by itself is supported only by MS Ψ.

As shown in the Variae lectiones minores (p. 734), B* omits λεγω (or λαλω or

λελαληκα), and thus does not support the NA main text reading, even though it 27
appears that the exemplar of B likely read λεγω or λαλω, with a resultant omission by
homoioteleuton. Since the leading Alexandrian MSS are divided (Ì A 33 for λαλω 66
versus Ì L N for λεγω), NA appears too speculative when citing B * solely in favor of

λεγω.
D and Ψ differ from the main text of NA by reading εαν instead of αν.
