59-320 Homework Assignment - Chapter 11 - Fall 2011

59-320 Homework - Chapter 11 (Chapter 12, 7th edition) - Fall 2011

On differences between the 7th and 8th edition:

Chapter 11 in the 8th edition corresponds to Chapter 12 in the 7th edition.
All exercises are numbered the same; some number differences among
problems.

Exercises
11-A (12-A). Potassium ion in a 250.0 (±0.1) mL water sample was precipitated with
sodium tetraphenylborate:

The precipitate was filtered, washed, dissolved in an organic solvent, and treated with
excess Hg(EDTA)2−:

The liberated EDTA was titrated with 28.73 (±0.03) mL of 0.0437 (±0.0001) M Zn2+.
Find [K+] (and its absolute uncertainty) in the original sample.

11-E (12-E). Suppose that 0.0100 M Mn2+ is titrated with 0.00500 M EDTA at pH 7.00.
(a) What is the concentration of free Mn2+ at the equivalence point?
(b) What is the quotient [H3Y−]/[H2Y2−] in the solution when the titration is just 63.7% of
the way to the equivalence point?

11-G (12-G). Iminodiacetic acid forms 2:1 complexes with many metal ions:

A 25.0 mL solution containing 0.120 M iminodiacetic acid buffered to pH 7.00 was

titrated with 25.0 mL of 0.0500 M Cu2+. Given that αX2− = 4.6 × 10−3 at pH 7.00, calculate
[Cu2+] in the resulting solution.
