INTRODUCTION TO CANCER INSTITUTE (WIA)

Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai, India is a Hospital and Research Institute delivering free
cancer care for thousands of poor patients over the past 50 years.

In 1954, Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy, India’s first woman medical graduate and social reformer, felt
the acute need for a hospital solely dedicated to cancer. Dr Reddy, a woman of fortitude and
vision founded the autonomous charitable comprehensive cancer centre under the auspices of
Women’s India Association (WIA) in 1955. Thanks to the unwavering efforts of
Dr.Krishnamurthy, the advisor andDr.V.Shanta, The Director, the Institute has grown from two
room centre to a magnificent hospital providing state of the art cancer care for over 100,000
patients annually. Today, Cancer Institute is the only free-standing, a non-profit, institution that
provides excellent cancer care regardless of socioeconomic conditions.

The Institute wages a multi-pronged attack on the deadly disease through Cancer Diagnosis,
Care, Prevention, Research and Education.

The Institute is Unique in its efforts by being the First in India to:

 Screen the rural population for early signs of cancer.


 Provide State of the Art Care for all patients, 60% of whom are treated free.
 Train rural public health workers health in personal communication.

INTRODUCTION:

Data entry is very important in any line of the organisation. the data collected must be properly
selected,orderly organised and entered in the computer.when the data is added correctly, the
information can help to execute the plan ahead and also to determine the goal. The social work
trainee was given the work of entering the survey data in the computer.

PPC (Pain and Palliative Care) is very important to the terminal stage of cancer
patients.palliative care as “an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their
families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and
relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT:

 TO ENTER THE SURVEY DATA.


 Orientation about patient form filling.
ACTIVITIES:

The Social Work trainee reported to the organisation by 8:30 in the morning. The Social Work
trainee was assigned the job of entering the survey data in the computer.

The survey was based on the recent medical camp conducted by the organisation in aSlam in
Chennai. The questionnaire contains details like name, gender,sex, type of tobacco usage, diet
habit, the amount spent on tobacco etc.

The trainee entered nearly 40 data. The trainee also helped in doing a PowerPoint presentation to
the HCL cancer programme.The trainee was given anorientation about PPC ( pain and palliative
care ) how to its done and how to fill the form of patients.

LEARNINGS:

Personal learning:

The understood the importance of accuracywhileentering the data. It serves as the base for
framing future goals and plans for action.

Professional learning:

The trainee learned time management. He managed time efficiency and completed the given
work on time. The trainee was also to work on Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. It improved his
computer knowledge.

Feedback and suggestions:

 Survey data entry was a different experiencein my internship.


 I have a good time with my coordinator.
 While doing PPT, I get to know about HCL contribution towards slum peoples.
 My suggestion is towards upgradation of the latest Microsoft office.

Date:29-01-2019

INTRODUCTION:

THE SOCIAL WORK TRAINEE RESPONDED THE ORGANISATION BY 8:30 am he


reported to MrsSasikala, her Social Work supervisor. She assigned the trainee to visit the field in
Gandhi Nagar, Sholinganallur.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To visit the Gandhi Nagar community


 To conduct a survey
 To patient ID card.

ACTIVITIES:

The social work trainee reaches the Gandhinagar community. He interacted with some
community people to know their awareness of tobacco usage.

The trainee called nearly 20 recipients from the data collected from recent medical camp. He
confirmed their presence for a housevisit.

The trainee helped his supervisorin issuing a patient ID card.

The trainee then left the field at 3:00 pm after reporting to the field staff in the community.

PERSONAL LEARNINGS:

 The social work trainee learned the importance of companionship with the patients.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:

 The trainee learned the ethics of communication.

FEEDBACKS AND SUGGESTION:

 The community peoples were very kind and helpful to find the house of the neighbours.
 They have good hospitality.
 My suggestion was giving proper information before about the volunteers to the people
because they thought the volunteers as a loan collection agent and said fake information
about the house.

Date:30-01-2019

INTRODUCTION:

The cancer institute has two buildings one is located near the children’s park that is new
hospital other is located in Adyar that is the main institute. In the new hospital, there is only OP.
In the main institute, the IN PATIENTS are treated. There isa male and female ward for cancer
patients. The institute has 428 beds in the main institute.

The trainee was assigned to go for ward rounds with he guide Miss. Betzy at 10:00 am.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To visit the female general ward.

ACTIVITIES:

Social work trainee and the supervisor took the organisation bus and reached the main
institute in Gandhi Nagar by 10:20 am. They visit the psycho-oncology department in the
hospital and to give their attendance.

Then the trainee and the supervisor reached the female general ward to check for new
patients and old cases. They also had some follow up with the cases.

The trainee helped the supervisor in conducting the counselling session. As the
supervisor was not familiar in Tamil, the trainee helped the supervisor in handling the cases.

The trainee gave need-based counselling by making the patients understand about the
body condition, what is cancer? diagnoses pattern, food to be taken and avoided, the habits to be
changed, etc.

The trainee had practical experience in counselling on patients. Around 2:00 pm the ward
rounds got over and the trainee and the supervisor took the institute bus and came to the main
hospital by 2:30 pm.
LEARNINGS:

PERSONAL LEARNING:

 Social work trainee learned the proper usage of words and language while
communicating with the patients.
 He learned how the patients facing difficulties.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:

 Trainee understood the art of counselling through practical experience.


 The trainee also learned the importance of companionship in hospital settings.

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTIONS:

 The female general Ward rounds was a different experience and it was very useful for the
trainee for his future needs.
 The guide was a more knowledgeable person and she taught the trainee many things
while at the time of counselling.
 Trainee’s suggestion was about the ward cleanliness and to maintain hygiene
environment to the patients.

INTRODUCTION:

Tobacco cessation clinic (TCC),To facilitate the smokers want to quit and counselling

to tobacco products users on its hazards.The trainee was assigned as assistant to the
supervisor MrsSasikala at 9:00am. The session was held at the new cancer
institute.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To give counselling to tobacco addiction patients.


 To follow up with the patients.

ACTIVITIES:

TheSocialWorktrainee reported to the organisation by 8:30 in the morning.At sharp 9:00am the
tobacco cessation clinic was started.

On that day there was only one patient who attended the session. His name was Ramarajan, 60
years old who was addicted tocigarettes. He smokes nearly 3-4 packets of cigarettes which is
around 40 cigarettes.

The supervisor gave a briefcounselling to the patient and said many Tips and tricks to
the patient to get rid of tobacco.

After the session MrsSasikala, psycho-oncologist gave an orientation about types of


cancer and tobacco addiction evaluation questionnaires. There are two types of questionnaires
being used here to evaluate the addiction level they are EORTC & CIQOL.

The session was ended at 2:00pm and the trainee had left the TTC hall by 2:10 pm.
LEARNINGS:

PERSONAL LEARNING:

 Social work trainee learned how to get rid of any type of addiction in general.
 He learned about types of cancers which can affect in each part of the human body.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:

 Social work trainee learned how to deal withaddicted people in a professional way
approach.
 Learned how Counselling should be given.

FEEDBACK AND SUGGESTION:

 The supervisor is very calm and professional in handling the patient.


 The session was very interactive and interesting.
 The supervisor didn't use the questionnaire because she knows all in that. So, the trainee
felt a little difficult to understand.
Day:05

Date:01-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

Tobacco cessation clinic (TCC),on day 4 the trainee was assigned to the tobacco cessation clinic
with the supervisor Miss.Anupriya. The trainee assembled the hall by 8:45am.

 To give counselling to tobacco addicted people.


 To follow up with the patients.

ACTIVITIES:

The Social work trainee assembled at tobacco cessation clinic hall at 8:45 am and the session
was started around 9:00 am.

On that day there was only two patients have been referred by the Pycho-oncology
department. One was MrMurugan and the other was karuppasamy. Both were addicted to
cigarettes. Mr Murugan he is an auto driver used to smoke around 30 cigarettes a day. His first
cigarette starts within 5 minutes from woke up.

Mr Karuppasamy is a scriptwriter who is working under manydirectors. He smokes


around 30-40 cigarettes in a day. He started smoking for the purpose to think more and for the
imagination thoughts.

Both the patients have given counselling separately by Miss Anupriya, they were taught
how to get rid of tobacco addiction. Asking solution for the recovery to the patients itself
because the patients only know how and what can divert them from the addiction.

The session was ended at 2:00 pm and the trainee had left the TTC hall by 2:10 pm.
LEARNINGS:

PERSONAL LEARNINGS:

 Social work trainee had learned to get rid of fear to speak about tobacco addiction toward
addicted people.
 Social work trainee learned about self-control.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 The trainee learned to be self-motivated and to give motivation to others.


 The trainee learned to be formal at the time of counselling.

FEEDBACK &SUGGESTIONS:

 The session was very interesting and informative.


 The patients were more positive thinkers.
 My suggestion was to attend or to bring more patients for the session so, that the session
will be more useful.
Day:06

Date:02-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

TFM (Tobacco Free Month) its meeting and screening conducted by the cancer
institution for the people who are addicted to tobacco. They are given counselling and also
screening test for the people in free. This meeting is conducted every month 1st Saturday

The trainee was assigned to go for TFM meeting in the Tobacco cession Clinic hall at
9:00 am under the supervision of Mrs.usha.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To conduct a TFM meeting.


 To give the screening test I the mouth.

ACTIVITY:

The trainee was assembled at the TCC hall at 8:45 am and the meeting starts at 9:00 am.
There were around 10 peoples came to attend the meeting. The people who came to meet are all
willing on there own to get rid of tobacco addiction.

So, the meeting was more effective because of their willingness. With the help of the
coordinator and the DE addicted people, the meeting will be useful to get rid of the addiction.

They have been given group work by the supervisor and trainee to the people. There were
around 3 trainees each one was given 2 peoples to give casework and finally all 10 was given
group work for the peoples.

Around 11:00 am the screening test was conducted to each person separately by the
doctors. If any symptoms of cancer arethere the doctor will advise taking treatment.

At 1:00 pm the meeting got over and al dispersed. Trainee left the dining hall at 1:15 pm.

PERSONAL LEARNINGS:

 Trainee learning about different types of tobacco used by the people.


 The trainee learned how people are addicted to tobacco and how they are getting
addicted to them.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:

 Learned to conduct social group work.


 Learned to do a casework for the patients.
 The trainee learned the techniques, tips and supplements like Nikko gum and Nikko
strip.

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTIONS:

 The meeting and screening test was conducted successfully by the trainee under the
coordination of Mrs.Usha.
 The patients were good at coordinating with the supervisor and the trainee.
 Suggestion towards the meeting was to bring more people who are all addicted to
tobacco.
Day: 07

Date:03-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

The cancer institute (WIA) had planned to have a world cancer day awareness programme (04-
02-2019) on 03-02-2017 Sunday morning 7:30 at Besant Nagar beach Chennai. The main event
was to make a human chain showing “EARLY DETECTION MAKES IT POSSIBLE” and
“CANCER IS CURABLE”.MrsGowthamiaactress who is a cancer survivor came to the
programme.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To conduct awareness programme about cancer.


 Registering the name of the people who came.
 To organise people to stand in there a place to form a human chain.

ACTIVITIES:

At morning 7:00 the trainee was asked to assemble in the Besant Nagar beach Chennai,
the landmark was near the Thalapakatti Biriyani shop,Besant Nagar.

The trainee reached the beach by 7:00 am and met the coordinator Miss. Revathy. The
coordinator assigned him to organise the crowd in the queues and make registration of the people
who come. The registration was opened from 7:00 am to 8:00 am.

After the registration at 8:00 am the trainee was assigned to coordinate the crowd to the
human chain point in the middle of the beach. And to make them stand on their place.

For the awareness programme, many participants have participated like schools, colleges,
rotary club, lions club, the general public, cancer patients and mainly cancer survivors and their
family.

The reason why they called the cancer survivors was, it will be more effectively reach
others when they say what is cancer and how to be confident to get cured of it. Miss. Gowthami
was also a cancer survivor came to address others that cancer was curable, early detection makes
it possible.

After the speech of Miss. Gowthami, MrSurendhran asst. Professor and Head of the
department of psycho-oncology gave a brief orientation about cancer, how it's coming, how it
affects the human body, how the diagnosis is given, not communicable disease, early
identification etc.

Around 8:30 am the people were coordinated by RJ Priya from hello FM to make the
human chain for two times. The human chain was captured by a flying drone and it was shown in
the big LED screen.

Around 9:00 am the human chain formation came to end and all were dispersed. The
trainee was asked to give away of the refreshments to the participants and volunteers. After
distribution of refreshments, the trainee was give morning tiffin. Around 12:30pm the

trainee left the beach along with the colleagues.

PERSONAL LEARNING:

 The trainee learned about what is cancer and how it's coming.
 The trainee learned about curable of cancer and treatment cancer.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:

 The trainee learned how the treatment is being given.


 He learned different types of treatments for cancer. The treatments are Chemotherapy,
Radiation therapy and Surgery.

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTION:

 The awareness programme was very useful to all the persons.


 Mass participants to make human chain was very nice to see in the LED screen.
 Suggestion towards the cancer day awareness programme was, the refreshment would be
given more because it's not sufficient to all.
Day:08

INTRODUCTION:

World Cancer Day press meet event at cancer institute (WIA) Adyar, facilities was
Graced by the presence of Dr Surendar, Dr. V. Shanta, Chairman, Cancer Institute (WIA), and
other dignitaries called for collective efforts to curtail the rising threat of cancer.

With the recent adoption of the 2017 Cancer Resolution by the World Health
Organization, together with the highly anticipated UN High-Level Meeting on
Noncommunicable Diseases in September 2018, there was a sharpened focus on this year’s
World Cancer Day. The day was also especially momentous as it marked the final year of the
‘We can. I can.’ campaign. Over the past three years, the campaign has been empowering
everyone – as individuals and as a collective - to play their part in reducing the impact of cancer.
This year more than ever, World Cancer Day captured the world’s attention.

The trainee was asked to assemble in the auditorium at 8:30 am and to make the
arrangement of the hall and the dining hall for the press meet.

ACTIVITIES:

Around 8:30 am the trainee was assigned to make preparation for the auditorium for the
press meet and the dining hall. He was asked to make the file of the agenda of the programme
and a note pad and a pen with that file.

At 10:00 am the press persons have arrived and all the participants have arrived and the
meeting had started. Dr Revathi has given orientation about the cancer day, next to
DrRevathi,DrSurendaran, Head Of the Department gave speech about the cancer day.

Around 11:00 am honourable Judge gave a speech about the cancer day and about the
cancer institute.DrV.Shanta, Chairman, Cancer Institute (WIA) came to the meeting at 11:30 am
and attended the press meet.
Next, to that, the meeting got over the trainee assigned the work to distribute the
refreshments first to the cancer patient’s attenders and following to them the press persons were
given the refreshments.

And all other participants were given the refreshments. All the other trainees were asked
to assemble in the dining hall and finally all dispersed around 1:30 pm.

 The trainee learned how a press meet will be.


 He learned to coordinate with the faculties of the institute.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 The trainee learned to conduct a press meet.


 The trainee learned to be professionally answered for all the questions asked in the press
meet.

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTION:

 That press meet was the first press meet which the trainee attended, it was totally
different from his thought.
 The press meet was very useful because it will be reaching all the people.
 Suggestion towards the meeting was the meeting could be more nicely organised like the
same refreshment for both press persons and the cancer patient’s attenders.
Day:09

Date: 05-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

On day five social work trainee was assigned to work on Tobacco Cessation Clinic
(TCC). He was asked to assemble at TCC hall at 8:45 am under the guidance of Mrs Usha.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To give counselling to tobacco addicted people.


 To follow up with the patients.
 To attending PPC

ACTIVITIES:

 Social work trainee was assembled in the TCC hall at 8:45 am and the session was
started at 9:00 am.
 On that day there were 4 patients came to attend the Tobacco session named Mr
Rajan who is a van driver, Mr Samual who is doing business, Mr Suresh who is HR
in paragon company and Mr Bala who is kuli.
 Each one is addicted to different Tobaccos like Bidi, Cigarettes, Hans, snuffs.
 On that day the counselling was given by the trainee to the addicted patients.
 And the Tobacco Cessation clinic was ended at 2:00 pm.
 Around 2:30 pm the trainee was sent to PPC (Pain and Palliative Care) where the
coordinator was Mr Sathish who is a social worker, He taught the trainee how a
terminal stage cancer patient should be given counselling.
 There were 4 patients attended the counselling session who are all at the final stage of
cancer. The work of the social worker there was to bring quality life for the patients at
the final stage till the end of life.

 The trainee learned to be confident at the time of counselling.


 The trainee learned to develop problem-solving skills.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 Identify and develop the process of critical thinking.


 Gained knowledge about social work practice towards tobacco addiction.

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTIONS:

 The day was very interesting and enthusiastic.


 The relationship between trainee and guide was fair.
 The session could be more helpful if the experienced supervisor gave the counselling,
even though the session was given by fresh trainee it was useful to the patients.
Day:10

Date:06-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

YHM (Youth Health Mela) is a competition cum awareness programme to all youth
person like youth employees, school and college students, youth peoples and others.

Health exhibition, Cultural Events, Competitions, Symposiums, Expert Meet, Ethnic


Food Court are organized. School students (8th & above), college students and corporate
employees can participate in the competitions.

The trainee was assigned to go for fieldwork with Mr Ganesh to invite participants from
different automobile industries and from the showroom.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To visit different automobile’s Head office.


 Get permission from HR to invite employees.

ACTIVITIES:

The trainee was asked to assemble in the cancer institute by 8:30 am at the psycho-
oncology department. By 9:30 am the trainee and his coordinator Mr Ganesh has started their
filed work. Their aim of the day is to cover all automobile head office nearer to the cancer
institute.

First, they went to Ashok Leyland (sindhuja Groups) head office by 10:00 am which is
located in Gundy. Both were going to the front desk and asked the receptionist to see the HR of
the company but they didn’t allow them to see him instead they gave HR’s mail id and company
phone number for the follow-up. They left the office by 11:00 am.

Next,they went to Hyundai head office by 11:35 am which is located in ekkaduthangal.


There they went to the reception asked to meet the HR of the company. But the HR was not
available at the office so the trainee gave the invitation to the reception and left the office after
getting HR’s mail id and phone number by 12:15 pm.
Around 12:20 pm they started to go towards Renault motors and Nissan motors which is
located in Nandhanam and reached there by 1:00 pm. Both the company’s head office was
located at the same build. First, they both visited Nissan motors, there they were invited by the
security and said them to wait for a fewminutes to meet HR of the company. They both waited
for the HR for 15 minutesa met him and explained about YHM which is going to be held on
March 8 and 9. Next, they both visited Renault motors and there the receptionist was invited and
they didn’t allow the trainee and coordinator to meet the HR. They said to send an official mail
from the cancer institute to the Renault motor’s mail id. After getting the mail id they, both left
the company by 2:00 pm and reached the cancer institute by 2:50 pm.

Finally, after taking rest for 30 minutes the trainee left the cancer institute by 3:30 pm.

 The trainee learned to plan how an organisation should be chosen before approaching it.
 The trainee learned how Patience should be there.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 The trainee learned how an official invitation should be sent to any organisation and
how to invite them.
 He learned how to approach any company formally.

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTIONS:

 Coordinator Mr Ganesh is a kind and calm person, His approach to the organisation was
very good and he taught the trainee many things about the field work and the cancer
institute.
 The field work day was very nice and different learnings.
 Suggestion towards the field work was, it would be better visiting HRs of all the
company if the coordinator got an appointment before itself.
Day: 11

Date: 07-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

On 07-02-2019 morning 8:30 the trainee was asked to come to the psycho-oncology
department. The trainee was assigned the work to go with Miss.Betzy to the female general ward
which is in the main institute to help Betzy in the counselling & skill training session.

ACTIVITIES:

The cancer institute bus was started towards the main institute by 10:00 am, the trainee&
the guide Miss.Betzy took the bus and reached the main institute by 10:30 am.

Reaching the main institute they went to the psycho-oncology counselling room and get
prepared for the skill training session and for the counselling.

Around 11:00 am both started to move towards the female general ward which is located
two buildings aside from the paediatric ward. After reaching there the trainee was asked to make
all the patients sit together and to watch the volunteers. There were two volunteers came to teach
them about skill training. The trainee was asked to help the patients and to interact with them.
This activity was done until12:00pm.

Around 12:00 pm Miss.Betzy and the trainee went to the next female ward for the
counselling and for the follow-up and review of the patients.

On that day they both visited five patients, Muthu Lakshmi, Valli, Latha, Prema and
minimal. They all are newly admitted patients. So, the trainee was asked to explain about cancer
and its treatment in an individual. Four patients in the ground floor and one patient in the 1st
floor.

Around 2:00 pm the counselling session was got over and the trainee and the coordinator
got the 2:30 pm bus and reached the new cancer institute by 3:00 pm, at 3:30 pm the trainee left
the institute.

 Learned to give confidence to the patients.


 Learned about the term TNM.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 Learned to give counselling to the cancer patients.


 Learned about skill training techniques for the mental relief of the patients.

FEEDBACKS & SUGGESTIONS:

 The session was very funny and happily went.


 The patients were very excited to learn skill training.
 They all were singing songs and narrating stories was went very interactively.
 The suggestion was the room was very dark. A bright room can help the patients to get
cured quickly.
Day:12

Date:08-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

On Friday the trainee was assigned to go with Mrs Usha, to invite the school children for the
YHM(Youth Health Mela) which is going to be held on March 8 and 9. They selected around 13
schools to invite for YHM.

The trainee was accompanied with Mrs Usha, they planned to go T Nagar by bus by 9:30 am.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To visit schools and invite students.


 To get permission from the principal.

ACTIVITIES:

In the morning 8:30 the trainee reached the cancer institute and reported to Mrs Usha. They
started moving towards T Nagar by 9:30 by way of the bus. They reached T Nagar by 10:20.
From the bus stand, they started to go for nearer schools around the T Nagar bus stand. First,
they went to Rama Krishna math matric Hr. The school which is located 500 meters from the bus
stand.

There they went and met the principal to invite the students for the competition. But the
principal didn't have a positive response to the trainee and the coordinator. Because of the
midterm exam period. For the follow-up, the trainee was asked to note the school name, mail id
and phone number. By 11:00 am they left the school and went to the next nearer school MB Jain
matriculation Hr. The school which is located 450 meters away from their location.

They reached to school by 11:15 am and met the principal directly but the principal was
not sure about sending off the children to the competition due to the same reason of the exam
period. The trainee explained that they can send 6th to 9th students for the competition. After that,
the principal was thinking and said she will inform layer to the trainee. For the follow-up, she
gave the mail id and the phone number. By 11:45 am they left the school and went to the next
school which is located 550 meters from their location.

Jain matriculation Hr. School there the trainee and the coordinator reached by 12:00
pm. They asked receptionist to meet the principal regarding the invite for the competition of
YHM. But the receptionist itself rejected to invite for the competition due to the exam period
they didn't even allow the Students from 6th to 9th. Around 12:15 pm they left the school and
walked towards the Government girls Hr. The school which is located 750 meters away from
their location where they directly met the principal of the school and invited the school children.
The principal was very kind and reposed in a positive way.

By 12:45 pm the trainee and the coordinator left the school and went to the next nearer
schools. The schools visited after Government school have all accepted the invite for the YHM
competition, the schools are Sanju school of arts, Sri RKM Sarada Vidyalaya Matric. Hr. School,
Sree Narayana Mission Sr.Sec.school, Shree saradha middle school, CHSS West Mambalam
government school, Albino matric Hr.sec school.

By 3:00 pm they left the spot T Nagar by auto and returned to the Cancer Institute
Adayar. They reached the institute by 3:45 pm and reported to the department. Around 4:00 pm
the trainee left the institute.
LEARNINGS:

PERSONAL LEARNINGS:

 The trainee learned how the schools are taking responsibility for the studies of the
children.
 The trainee was taught about self confidence while approaching a high official person.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 The trainee was fully made to do the invite for the YHM competition, by that he learned
to do the inviting face to face in a formal way.
 The trainee learned to be perfect in the way of approaching an institution.

FEEDBACKS & SUGGESTIONS:

 The field work with Mrs Usha was very nice and informative.
 She taught the trainee many things about the formal way of inviting.
 Suggestion towards the field work and the YHM was, the YHM competition can be done
conducted in the month of January or February because conducting in the March many
schools are not accepting the invite due to the exam period.

Date:09-02-2019

INTRODUCTION:

On 9-2-2019 the trainee was assigned the work to go to the main institute for female general
ward with the coordinator Miss. Betsy. Due to Saturday, the working hours of the institute was
from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. The trainee was assigned to go for female general ward and conduct
Support Group Meeting and Reviewing of patients.

PLAN FOR THE DAY:

 To conduct a Support Group Meeting.


 To do reviewing of the patients.

ACTIVITIES:

At the morning 9:00 the trainee was asked to assemble in the psycho-oncology
counselling room which is located in the main institute paediatric ward. The trainee reached the
main institute by 9:00 and he reported to Miss. Betsy.

Around 9:30 am the coordinator gave a lecture about what is cancer, how its forming and
the treatments which are there for the diagnosis. Cancer may form due to chemicals,
environmental background, genetic, Tobacco usage, or HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

And she taught about the major four cancers they are Sarcoma, Carcinoma, Lymphoma,
Leukaemia. All cancers are grouped under these four categories. The lecture was going till 11:00
am.
Around 11:15 am they started to go for female general ward for the Support Group
Meeting conducting for the patients. Support Group Meeting was a meeting which is conducted
for the purpose of the patient’s benefit. In that meeting, all the patients were asked to assemble in
a place and the meeting was conducted by the coordinator Miss. Betzy, trainee and with a doctor.
The purpose of the doctor was to answer the questions asked by the patients about any clinical
queries.

The meeting was helpful for the patients to clarify their doubts about cancer and its
treatment, diet and etc. The meeting was conducted for 1 hr. around 12:20 pm the meeting was
ended and all the patients went back to their bed.

After that, the coordinator and the trainee went to check the review of the patients. They
met 2 review patients and left the female general ward around 1:00 pm.

 The trainee learned to deal with patients.


 He learned to answer the patient’s questions.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNINGS:

 The trainee learned to conduct a Support Group Meeting.


 The trainee learned to handle a group work activity.

FEEDBACKS & SUGGESTIONS:

 The meeting went in an active way of interaction between both patients and the meeting
organisers.
 Conducting of support group meeting was a great idea to keep the patients from the fear
of cancer.
 Suggestion towards the meeting was, the meeting could be done to all other patients in a
whole so that all the patients can come out the fear.
