One of my dream

Good evening to all of my beloved toastmaster club member. Tonight, I am going to share
with you guys the reason I joined toastmaster club. When I was young, I dreamed of becoming
many things. Sometimes, I imagined I was holding a sniper gun and becoming a top police
sniper in the country. Other times, I wished I could become a pilot and travelling around the
world. I think these two dream have a great connection with the TV drama that I had watched
when I was young. Out of so many dreams, one of them is speaking a good English. I admire
those who can speak a good and fluent English. The same thing goes on up until today. Some
of you might just say, “Since you are so interested in it, you can just simply learn and master
it by your own, so what is the problem?”. But sometimes, we would need a positive
environment and motivation to push us forward in order to achieve what we wanted to achieve
especially when it comes to learning and mastering a new language. For my family, we only
communicate in Foo Chow. So, I think it is definitely not a problem for me if I have been asked
to give a speech in Foo Chow. Why? Because I have already get used to it.

During my time in secondary school, all of my classmate communicate in Mandarin. I think it

was not suitable for me to communicate with them in English because they would either
ridicule me or deem that there was something wrong with my mental. What I did was hold it
back and hope that one day I would be given the opportunity to speak and communicate in
English. Who knows, mybe I got a chance when I enter college or university?

But, things always happen in the opposite way to what we have expected. Five years ago, I
have been given the opportunity to enter Batu Lintang Teacher Training College to pursue my
first degree in Science Education. In the same year, the government had come up with a policy
which stated that science and math subject should be taught in Malays. In conjunction with
the amendment that had been made by the government, all of our syllabus and books have
been changed to Malays in the same year. As a teacher trainee, we seldom have the
opportunity to get expose ourself to English, let alone communicate in English. Of course, it is
a different story for TESL group who are trained to become a English teacher. So, the problem
persists up until today. But still, what I want to achieve, it doesn’t change. And I believed, as
a teacher, we have to equip ourself with all sorts of languages because we will have to deal
with different kind of student from different background and ethnic in order to become a good
teacher. Besides, if you can understand English, you will be gaining a better access to all kinds
of information that exist on the Internet because many of them are written in English. So, here
I am, joining this toastmaster club and I hope one day, I could speak a wonderful English. I
believed perseverance is the only key toward success. Thank you.
