Text Book: Introduction to Statistical Quality Control, by D. Montgomery, 6th (or 7th) Ed, Wiley, 2008 (2013).

References: Statistical Quality Control, by E.L. Grant and R. S. Leavenworth, 7th Ed. McGraw Hill, 1996.
Design of Experiments Using Taguchi Approach: 16 Steps to Product and Process Improvement, by R. Roy,
John Wiley 2001.

Course Description: Importance of quality; total quality management; statistical concepts relevant to process
control; control charts for variables and attributes; sampling plans. Introduction to reliability models and
acceptance testing; issues of standardization.

Course Objectives: To well understand the statistical principles and tools used for quality control and
improvement. Be able to apply these principles and techniques in industrial systems analysis. To understand and
be familiar with fundamental concepts related to product quality and reliability issues. Be able to construct and
use different control charts and sampling plans in industry. Be familiar with process capability analysis and other
quality related techniques.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

1. Define principles of statistical quality control and quality improvement for engineering and other
applications
2. Identify main probability distributions and statistical tools for setting up quality control charts, sampling
inspections and reliability analysis
3. Develop and apply Shewhart control charts for process analysis and control
4. Develop non-Shewhart control charts for process control with special requirement.
5. Identify and develop statistical tools for process and measurement system capability analysis
6. Identify and develop sampling inspection plans for acceptance sampling and rectifying inspection

1
7. Identify and develop statistical and numerical tools for system reliability analysis and improvement
8. Solve comprehensive statistical control problems in the form of course project with presentation
