Introduction
“Green Cleaning Policy” has now become a standard of sorts in the industry and it involves
several aspects, most important among which is the re-evaluation of current cleaning products and methods.
Hotels have been raising their standards of eco-friendliness to accommodate their duty to the world around
as much as to demanding guests. Housekeeping has undergone a sea change, especially since the mid-90s.
The use of technology has changed the style and functioning of the department in a large way. This has
changed the prevalent mind set and has increased professionalism. In modern world professional
housekeepers are striving to get housekeeping its due recognition in the hospitality industry. This
department is responsible for bringing in the largest share of profit to an accommodation operation, but this
fact is hardly acknowledged and veterans of the industry too often must consider it a thankless job. There is
a growing trend towards preserving our natural reserves by means of sustainability and eco-friendly
practices. The hotel industry consumes extensive amounts of fuel, energy, water and other non-renewable
resources. Housekeeping operations are increasingly becoming scientific and mechanized. Efficiently
managed Housekeeping departments ensure the cleanliness, safeguarding and aesthetic entreat of the hotel.
The tasks performed by Housekeeping department are pivotal to the horizontal daily operation of any hotel.
In the present stringent competitive scenario maintaining hotel is very tough and satisfying guest is even
tougher. As the hospitality industry grows it will face lots of challenges which lead to increase in latest
trends in diverse sections of hospitality. Hotels are generating optimum revenue by major operating
departments like Housekeeping which deals with the schedule operations of Hotels. Housekeeping is
shifting hastily, earlier, the responsibility of the housekeeping department was to prepare clean guestrooms
on a timely basis but now enormous changes have been made in Hotel Housekeeping. After all,
housekeeping department is responsible for bringing in the largest share of profit to the hotel. So this study
(HRANI,2013) With the focus progressively on responsible tourism and green practices, there is much
more to being ecologically friendly than reusing sheets and towels. Environmentally-friendly properties whose
managers are eager to institute programmes that save water, save energy and reduce solid waste—while saving
money.” Eco practices are one of the most spectacular emerging trends in hotel housekeeping. “Going green”
is a trend of the day and environment sound policies increases the monetary health of a property. There is an
increasing awareness to use eco-friendly amenities, commodities and practices. Housekeepers are developing
and adopting new ways to conserve water and energy. According to American Hotel and Lodging Association
(AHLA) hospitality industry spends $3.7 billion in a year on energy. AHLA estimates that reducing energy use
by 10% industry would save $ 285 million. The energy management system in the hotel helps to analyse data
from major energy consuming appliances. Compact fluorescent lamps are the spinal column in high efficiency
lighting. These lamps save energy waste. Ceiling motion sensors are used in meeting rooms, conference rooms
and public areas to reduce energy waste. Housekeepers are looking for products and equipment that help in
conserving energy. There found that consumers expected more from green hotels and required their practices
This study introduced have important of the hospitality industry in Metro manila, the Sustainable of green
practices with in Housekeeping department to become more sustainable and reduce any potential negative
impacts on the environment. Perhaps one of the reasons that there has been more awareness rather than action
about greening in the hotel industry is because there has not been a clearly articulated business case for going
green. Currently, the hotel industry is still supply driven rather than demand led when looking at
environmental practices. Although demand is growing for „green‟ hotels by the general public, individual
hotels must see benefits through all elements to be convinced of the business case.
Training
Staffs are the nucleus of your business and will have a major hand in determining its success. Make
sure they feel valued right from the get-go with the right recruitment and training practices. Need for improved
productivity has become universally accepted and that it depends on efficient and effective training is not less
ostensible. It has further become essential in view of advancement in modern world to invest in training
(Singh, 2014) Lodging operations always depends significantly on the ability of managers to find and retain
talented employees. Jyoti.et.al(2013) examines that In Europe, hotel management education and training
involves Food and Beverages operations, but in USA priority is given to finance, marketing, computer
technology and management. Jayawardena (1993) found that the best background for general manager is a mix
of these two concepts education and training. Training and motivating employees is a fundamental tool in the
present scenario. Increased mechanization of housekeeping operations has placed housekeeping managers in a
position to train staff, an optimum usage of equipment, supplies and labour to increase efficiency in
operations. Housekeeping jobs are going to mechanized gradually and training is fundamental to maintain high
level of performance and productivity standards. Need of collaborate efforts required between Hotel
housekeepers and hotel management institutes for theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge.
The resource based theory of the firm identifies through best practice examples that being environmentally
committed ensures competitiveness and increased organizational performance that will lead to lower costs,
improved reputation and strategic alignment with future changes in the general business environment, more
interested in Low impact interiors to become healthy and productive places to stay and work. The push towards
“green” interiors also helps hoteliers get closer to their green building certification. Sustainable interiors should
consist of products whose manufacturing have little to no impact on the environment and can be
environmentally friendly to dispose of. Another term for this is cradle to grave or life cycle assessment, it is a
tool used to help determine the environmental impact of products, services, or processes. Aspects to consider
when choosing sustainable furniture are manufacturing practices and materials used, a group of hotel leaders
representing suppliers, brands, architecture and design firms, and owners launched the Hospitality Sustainable
Purchasing Consortium. There some to consider to sustain the green practices in using of the equipment that
conserved water, energy in particular area in guestroom and the natural texture of linen that are eco-friendly,
and It was created to provide an industry wide purchasing performance measurement solution so that hotels are
built, furnished and operated in ways that benefit guest health, comfort and wellbeing ,and enhance the
environmental and social impacts of the industry (Hospitality). The goal of the consortium is to support product
Substantial quantities of energy and water are consumed in providing comfort and services to guests. Due
to this there is a general need for environmental protection. There is a need for general awareness and
environmental awareness among the general public. Hotels undertake a variety of environmental activities. They
may include brochures of water and energy conservation displayed in hotel rooms, donation of left-over good quality
food to local charity organizations. Installing energy-efficient lighting equipment in hotels may be one of the key
solutions. Among the towel, water saving events and linen reuse program are already well-established practice in most
of the European countries. This helps to not only save water but reduce the usage of detergents and prolong the life of
the material. The use of environmental friendly chemicals and detergents and contracting an external company for
laundry services are also some of the green measures. Water saving fixtures and waste sorting and recycling materials
is stressed upon to a large extent in today’s hotel scenario. The installation of soap and shampoo-dispensers in guest
bathrooms instead of individually packed toiletries should be practiced. Food waste contributes radically to the space
requirements of modern landfills. Recycling is a popular practice, perhaps because many recycling methods have
a short payback period and can yield significant savings. Hotels also have reduced disposal of FF&E, for example,
by giving old furniture to charities or selling used equipment. Hotels’ comprehensive water reduction efforts have
shown considerable benefit. Water can be aerated, reduced in pressure, and recycled as a means to reduce water
waste. One of the most popular ways that hotels have reduced water consumption is replacing current appliances with
water-efficient ones, including laundry facilities, toilets, showers, and faucets. It has also been found that water-saving
notices in bathrooms that encourage customers to regulate their water use are effective.
