the values of appreciation and camaraderie among the students through collaborative
activities. Students are expected to share their ideas and listen to the ideas of others.
Finally, this lesson points out the significance of the CLL as a learning-centered
strategy.

c. ABSTRACTION

Community Language Learning

Origin

CLL was developed by Charles A. Curran and his associates in Chicago, 1955. It
is sometimes cited as an example of a humanistic approach and derives its primary insights
from counselling.
With that, the roles of the teacher are the counselor and the learners, the clients.
The counselor does not automatically assist the clients but passively offer his/her help to
them.

Influenced by Carl Roger’s humanistic psychology, Curran found that adults often

feel threatened by a new learning situation or fear that they will appear foolish.
A way to deal with the fears of students is for teachers to become language
counselors, skillful understanders of the struggle students face as they attempt to internalize
another language. In this way, teachers can help students overcome their negative feelings
and further turn them into positive energy in learning.

Overview

• Also known as “COUNSELING – LEARNING”

• A good method to practice speaking and listening.

• Teacher’s and students’ role:

(Teacher = Counselor/Students = Client)

• Native language is permitted among students.
• Translation will be provided by the teacher.
• Specially created for adult learner who might fear to appear foolish.
• Students apply the target language independently when they feel confident
enough to do so.
• Students are encouraged to express how they feel about the learning process.

Principles
1. Learning is persons: human individuals need to be understood and aided in the
process of fulfilling personal values and goals; this is best done in community with others
striving to attain the same goals; whole-persons learning in a relationship of trust, support,
and cooperation between teacher and students and among students.
2. Learning is dynamic and creative: learning is a living and developmental process
Building a relationship with and among students is important as well as lessening their
fears to a new learning situation. Teachers do not remain in the front of the classroom to
reduce threat to them. To let students feel secure facilitates their learning such as use of
L1, more cooperation in the community, understanding what will happen in each activity
and so on.

Advantages of CLL
1. Works well with lower level students who are struggling in speaking English.
2. It creates a warm, sympathetic and trusting relationship between teacher and
students.
3. Counselor allow the learners to determine type of conversation.
4. Train students to become independent.

Disadvantages of CLL
1. Some learners find it difficult to speak on tape.
2. In order for students to become independent, teacher might neglect the need for
guidance.
3. Teacher has to be highly proficient in the target language and in the language of
students.
4. Translation is an intricate and difficult task. The success of this method relies

largely on the counselor’s translation.

5. It is time consuming to carry out.

d. APPLICATION
A. MY LEARNING BANK
INDIVIDUAL WORK
Directions: Fill in the Learning Bank by supplying all the information you have gained
from the lesson.

B. DEBATE
GROUP WORK
Directions: Talk on a specific and a timely topic of today. Then, have a mini debate on the
class. Remember to have a prep time before the debate to cater collaboration and data
expression.
