EU Public Affairs Training

2019 has ushered in real changes in Brussels. A more diverse Parliament has been sworn in and a
radically redesigned and more proactive Commission soon begins work. It is essential for any business to
understand the changes, how they will affect their business and how they can exert their influence in
Brussels.

Rud Pedersen Public Affairs Brussels invites you to attend our one-day training on public affairs for the
European Institutions. Attendees will learn:
How lobbying and advocacy works in Brussels
What is currently on the policy agenda and why it matters to you
How to monitor, understand and influence events in Brussels

The programme for the day will be led by our experts from the Brussels office. It has been designed to
demystify the European Institutions and ensure attendees emerge with actionable insight and practical
tools to follow and engage with developments in Brussels.

14:00-15:00 – Working with Think Tanks

Hans Martens Hans was CEO of one of Brussels' leading think tanks, the European Policy
Centre. He will explain how business can ally with think tanks to contribute
proactively and positively with policymakers and others in the Brussels milieu
using an evidence-based footing.

15:00-16:30 – Using Media and Social Media to Influence the EU

Kaat Detré, John and Kaat bring their combined experience in digital advocacy campaigns
John McLean and media-driven public affairs. This will be a practical discussion on what can
be achieved online, and how you can use digital and media levers to follow
and influence Brussels from afar.

Speaker profiles

Martin Bresson, Partner


Before joining Rud Pedersen, Martin Bresson was strategic advisor to clients and the leadership team at
FleishmanHillard, a leading consultancy in Brussels. Martin served global, European and Nordic clients from all
sectors with emphasis on financial services and cross-sectorial issues such as competition, trade and tax.

Martin has more than a decade of experience in working with a variety of complex regulatory issues and working
with the political institutions in the European capital. He was director for International Affairs in the Ministry of
Business and Growth before he settled in Brussels.

Following this, he was responsible for negotiating the financial services files as well as overseeing the internal
market and trade files during the Danish Presidency of the European Union in 2012.

Hans Martens, Senior Advisor


After a career in Denmark, Hans set up his own consultancy in Denmark and Brussels and started working
on, amongst other things, the EU support programmes for the former Soviet Union and East and Central
Europe. In 2002, Hans took over the position as CEO of one of Brussels' leading think tanks, the European
Policy Centre, where he dealt with a wide spectrum of EU policies.

When he retired from that post in 2013, Hans continued chairing the think tank's health programme and began
working on a number of projects related to sustainable health systems and on European dimensions of energy
policy.

Hans is also a frequent speaker, commentator and writer on European affairs.

Jaume Loffredo, Senior Consultant


Jaume joined Rud Pedersen Public Affairs in April 2019, after five years working as a Policy Manager at a trade
association representing companies distributing off-gas grid to rural customers.
In that role, he was responsible for the strategic organisation of three internal working groups. He developed the
strategic plan, together with the association members, coordinated the group’s work and ensured that
deliverables were met.

He started his Brussels life as an advisor for an Italian Member of the European Parliament belonging to the
S&D Group.

John McLean, Consultant


John is a Public Affairs Consultant with a background in media relations and the delivery of digital campaigns in
Brussels. He has worked on campaigns in the agriculture, energy, chemicals, FMCG and healthcare sectors.
Previously, John worked in the London financial sector on policy and campaigning for a microfinance trade
association and delivering events in financial technology.

John holds a BA in Liberal Arts and History from Queen’s University Belfast and a MA in Public Policy from
Central European University.

Kaat Detré, Consultant


Prior to joining Rud Pedersen as a public affairs consultant, Kaat was Team Lead at Benelux flash sales agency
Veepee, where she worked for three years in planning and project management. She has previous experience
in public affairs consulting in Brussels.

Kaat holds a Master’s Degree in Political Science and Government with Distinction from Université libre de
Bruxelles, where she was Head of the Model United Nations Project. She also holds both a Bachelor's Degree in
History and a Master’s Degree in Modern History from the University of Leuven

Simona Camilli, Research Executive


Simona has substantial institutional knowledge, having completed internships at the European Parliament, in
DG Presidency, and at VoteWatch Europe, an organization that provides insights on the European Parliament
and the Council of the European Union.

At VoteWatch Europe, Simona worked as Research and Communication Assistant and gained insight on food
regulation, trade, environmental and economic policies.

Simona holds a BA in Political Science and International Relations, an MA in European Public Affairs
from Maastricht University, and an Executive Program in Lobbying and Institutional Relations from LUISS Guido
Carli University.
