General accommodations and recommended strategies:

- Sarah works well in small groups where teacher can provide her explicit 1:1 support but as part of a group
(confidence with engagement).
- The need for 1:1 support has increased as work has become more complex. In-class support to support
understanding of instructions and sequencing task requirements.
- Simplify and pre-teach vocabulary used to assist comprehension – currently from teacher – SSO support pre-teach
of vocabulary
- Middle school – if note taking is required – she is to observe the teaching and listen carefully – be given a copy via
Seqta. Take FM to all classes.
- Model reading aloud/rehearsing what has been said
- Recast and remodel spoken and written sentences so she may learn and improve upon own structures.
- Explicit 1:1 instruction to develop new vocabulary including: pre-teaching key words prior to starting a task (e.g.
key concepts from a book or unit being studied), use demonstrations where possible, repeat vocabulary in different
contexts to encourage its understanding and use. Supplement visual cues where possible and provide
paraphrased or repeated instructions where required.
- Sarah benefits from explicit modelling, prompts, and assistance to ensure she uses correct grammar, word order
and meaning in her sentences.
- Use key questions (who, what, why, when, where) to assist in generating sentences and narratives, retelling
stories etc.
- Use cues (first, next, last) to help sequence a verbal or written story.
- Before commencing written tasks, orally rehearse 1:1 thoughts and ideas verbally to the teacher.
- Sarah benefits from receiving feedback in the drafting stage which will enable her to determine relevant content.
Teachers should aim to expand Sarah’s skill set so that she is able to focus on the essential criteria of the task, as
opposed to writing ‘fluff’ in her assessment pieces.
- Additional support with Home Group/English/Global Studies teacher (5 x 45-minute lessons per week, approx. one
lesson per day – used to consolidate content in class, breaking down task requirements/achievement standards)
- Additional SSO support in classes (10 x 45-minute lessons per week)
