Feedback on Teaching (Final Years)

Preservice teacher’s name Morgan Blackwell Year level: Boys Yr 8 HPE Teacher: Adam Langley
Date1/4/19 Lesson: Basketball in the gym. Lesson duration: 100mins
Focus of this observation is the implementation of behavioural and classroom management strategies

Planning and Preparation

Lesson was planned in detail with sequential activities that are pitched at the appropriate level of challenge.
Differentiation strategies have been clearly outlined within planning. Activities and questions to be used to ascertain
students understanding have been specified. Specific outline of some low level behaviour management strategies
have been identified as has a clear understanding of the College behaviour management procedures.

Specific behaviour management strategies Implemented

 Good use of names to address inappropriate behaviour. This has had an impact on all and helped maintain a presence.
 Good use of whistle to get attention and use of countdown to get students in quickly. Are they listening??
 You have noticed and removed distraction(all basketballs placed at the side)
 Use of name and targeted questioning. Good this has shown students they need to pay attention as they might get asked.
 Smooth use of whistle countdown and basketballs on the rack and students sat round the board.
 Have you noticed Wade and Lucas??? Good you have and used questioning as a tool. Good follow up by separating them
you have added a small consequence.
 Use of group consequence for students failing to be where you wanted them at the end of countdown. Countdown has
been very effective in getting attention quickly. The repetition of it is helping set those expectations and routines.
 Using praise rather than focusing on the negatives is helping build a good relationship with these students.
 Again use of voice across gym is helping you maintain that presence!
 Good you have noticed Wade again and used “official first warning”. I like that you outlined the consequences for further
warnings. Shows awareness of school procedures and adds consistency.
Classroom Management

 Good students are able to get directly onto shooting activity as they enter the lesson. This has immediately helped focus
them.
 Good you have used doing roll as an opportunity to recap expectations and clearly identify lesson objectives and your
expected outcomes.
 Clear grouping strategy used to separate specific students and partner up others.
 Clear instruction and excellent use of demo. Could you utilise students in them?? You have just done this well done!!
 You have used competition as a method of maintain focus well done. This has improved student outcomes and raised
achievement and attainment.
 The games are starting to break down. You have noticed and added progressions. The use of student ideas for
modifications to rules allowed some deeper thinking about their progress and how it can be improved. Students are
starting to reflect on their own performances. You are switched on to when they need a change!
 Your use of open questions is good and you have been able to narrow them down when needed. However, this is an area
we can focus on at a later stage within you placement. We can get more out of them rather than you providing the
answers at times.
General Feedback (Positive comments and goals for next lesson)
This was a very well structured lesson. This has stemmed from detailed planning that is based around your knowledge of the
students and the curriculum content. You have management low level disruptions quickly and consistently. This shows a “fair”
approach to the students. You have started to build very good relationships with the students and are using these to manage them
effectively and differentiate for them with greater accuracy.

I have mentioned about the questioning and answering strategies you have used and there are ways of getting more from the
students and making them access higher order thinking more frequently. This is an area we can look at next week.
